The huge bombshell dropped one after another without giving Gu Luoxin a chance to process it, so much that he could react with nothing aside from putting on a blank face.

The doctor admitted he was an outsider? Did that mean he was... he was a player as well? Like Gu Luoxin?!

No sooner than a flicker of joy burst in his chest than it was extinguished by a wave of icy chill when the doctor suddenly stood up with his arms wide open, exclaiming, "Oh, glory to the Omnipotent One! How mighty your presence is! Only you have the right to rule over his universe and beyond!" Gone was his elegant and composed façade. A hint of fervent madness shone in those dark eyes as he fixed his gaze on the ceiling as though seeing something—or someone—beyond it, painting a vivid image of a zealot worshipping his faith, his god.

Gu Luoxin stared at him in horror.

That familiar phrase... he had once heard it from the mouth of the nightmare creature who had descended into their Cycle due to a blood feud with Shen Nianzu. At that time, even with the collective strength of all the players present—including Noir, Ying, and others—they still could not defeat her. They were totally under her mercy.

Until the Nightmare appeared.

And just with its mere presence, she so easily collapsed on her knees, her frame trembling in raw, primal fear.

"The Omnipotent One... why... why have you descended into this lowly realm?" was what she had said.

—The Omnipotent One.

It was referring to the Nightmare!

The doctor, he... he was not a player at all as Gu Luoxin had originally thought, but a nightmare creature who had come here from another realm!

Gu Luoxin felt like his head was about to split open as he processed this piece of shocking information. Was this how a high-level Cycle was supposed to be? The level of difficulty was freaking insane! They not only had to tiptoe around the death conditions imposed on them by this Cycle, but also watch out for the nightmare creatures from another realm as well?!

But in this way, the mystery around the doctor could finally be explained.

"You don’t seem surprised at all," the man suddenly turned to him after singing endless praises to the Nightmare, his abyss-like dark eyes accessing. "You must know who I’m talking about, don’t you?"

Gu Luoxin saw no more reason for him to continue feigning ignorance in front of this person. Might as well take the chance to probe for information, he judged. "Why have you come here?" he finally gave in to his curiosity, for the first thing that crossed his mind as soon as he figured out the doctor’s real identity was the Nightmare’s weakness.

Also the reason why they decided to enter this Cycle in the first place.

This was Gu Luoxin’s one and only chance to find out the truth!

The doctor’s smile deepened, likely pleased that he was finally cooperating. But as if recalling something, his gaze darkened, "Of course, it’s to undertake the important mission bestowed upon me by the Omnipotent One. With the designated heir missing, it needs to secure another energy source to sustain itself—the stronger the better. Which is why this world is perfect, you see."

Important mission by the Nightmare? Designated heir? Energy source?

Gu Luoxin’s heart beat faster and faster. Although there was a lot he couldn’t understand from the doctor’s words, he had an inexplicable hunch that he had touched upon the edge of the truth. This must be the Nightmare’s weakness everyone had been searching for! If he could bring this information out, if he could relay this to his teammates... he was certain Shen Nianzu, the brain of the group, must be able to interpret it!

Swallowing hard, Gu Luoxin followed along with the other person, asking, "Why is this world perfect...?"

"The population," an eerie grin spread across the doctor’s face. "The larger the population, the easier it becomes for evil thoughts to form. Evil exists everywhere, in the cracks of shadow, in the hidden corners of the city, in the depths of the ocean, amidst the rolling dark clouds above... this world is the perfect breeding place for evil. All I need to do is trigger a little spark here and there, and the explosion that follows will always be spectacular. Unfortunately," his lips twisted into a contemptuous sneer, "this world’s consciousness is far too tenacious. Even though it teetered on the brink of destruction again and again, it always found a way to repair itself. Stubborn. How utterly disgusting," he spat out in scorn and malice.

Evil? Gu Luoxin held his breath. Was that the source of the Nightmare’s power? Evil thoughts—and perhaps the negative emotions they generated? That was possible, considering how the Cycle always aimed to strike the deepest fear and despair into the players’ hearts.

Could this be the reason why the doctor had been going around killing the servants in this residence...?

"These hard to chew edges have to be smoothed out before the Omnipotent One could devour it entirely. That left me with no other choice but to seek a little assistance," the man continued with a huff. "Ares has been a great help, though."

"Ares?" Gu Luoxin was startled by the name that shouldn’t have popped up here, in this kind of conversation. "Young Master Ares? What did he..."

What did Young Master Ares have to do with this? He was already dead, back in the land territory!

Unless...

"Is that you?" Gu Luoxin glared at him, his teeth gnashing in anger. "Are you the one who killed him?!" The intensity of his fury surprised even Gu Luoxin himself. He did not expect to be so attached to someone whom he had just met two days ago. Was it because of their similar faces? Or because Young Master Ares’ life was simply too tragic? Gu Luoxin could not tell for sure. He just felt... sad, so sad and distressed that even in his death, the gentle and kind young man was still a tool in another person’s malicious scheme.

Young Master Ares did not deserve this kind of injustice!

But the doctor looked at him funnily like he was watching a clown. "Me? Killing him?" then he burst out into uncontrollable laughter as if Gu Luoxin’s seething accusation had amused him so.

"Oh dear... you really have no idea, do you?" he dabbed the corner of his eye as if wiping a tear. At the sight of Gu Luoxin’s complexion which alternated between red and white, he could barely suppress his grin, sighing in mock lament, "That boy... tsk tsk, he sure is insane. Such a weak body and young age, yet already he has developed a grand ambition. Did you know? His desire to destroy this world and its entirety is so strong that I didn’t mind lending him some help. After all, it happened to align perfectly with my own goals."

"And you," he pointed at Gu Luoxin, who had yet to recover from the shocking words, and stated boldly,

"You’re going to watch me make it happen. Consider it your honor since you share the same face as Ares."
