Chapter 462: Bird Cage

Looking around, Gu Luoxin only saw a look of utter bewilderment on the other mice’s features, and the realization that he was the only one who could perceive the mournful cries echoing through the air sent a chill of terror racing down his spine. No way, it couldn’t possibly be a g-g-ghost, right? But this wasn’t even a supernatural cycle!

Gu Luoxin’s poor little heart shriveled in fright, and if he were a human right now, his complexion would have been drained of colors. But alas, in his current form, everyone could only see his dilated pupils and his whiskers that were twitching like crazy.

"Xinxin? Are you alright ciit?"

"What are you talking about? We can’t hear anything ciit."

"Shouldn’t we be moving to rescue our pals before they’re harmed by humans?"

The mice were simple-minded and dedicated. Being told that their mission tonight was to save their captured friends, they simply focused all of their attention on it and disregarded everything else. In other words, their sense of curiosity was almost nonexistent. Only Caen, who was aware of Gu Luoxin’s real identity and his magical powers, thought otherwise. He stopped the others from leaving and addressed Gu Luoxin,

"What is it you’re hearing ciit? Can you describe it to me?"

Gu Luoxin shot an extremely grateful look at him. "S–Someone is crying ciit. The voice is soft, delicate and it comes from..." Twitching his round ears, Gu Luoxin snapped his head to a certain direction, exclaiming, "...there!"

The area where Gu Luoxin pointed at was the deeper recesses of the underground prison. With him leading the way, the group of mice cautiously advanced toward the source of the sound, the darkness closing in around them. Surprising, perhaps due to the royal ball, they encountered no guards along the way, their journey proceeding without hindrance.

As they delved deeper, the louder and clearer the crying sounds became, until Gu Luoxin finally halted and pointed at the wall beside him.

"Here!" He declared. "The voice... I’m one hundred percent certain it is coming from the other side of the wall ciit!"

"Here?" Caen stuck his ear to the wall and shook his head in confusion. "I didn’t hear anything ciit..."

The other mice echoed his words. "I didn’t hear anything either..."

"Xinxin, are you sure you’re not mistaken ciit?"

He didn’t! He couldn’t have possibly mistaken it; the cries sounded so close that Gu Luoxin felt like he could reach the other person if the wall was directly broken down!

The dread in his heart intensified with each passing second, rendering him unable to think clearly. How was it that he was the only one who could hear the cries?

Actually, should he just break down the walls? No, he couldn’t— what was he thinking?! If he did, he would only attract unwarranted attention here and jeopardize everyone’s safety. He chastised himself for even considering it. Goodness gracious, this must be due to Jin Jiuchi’s bad influence that tempted him to resort to violence as the easy way out!

Shaking his head vigorously, Gu Luoxin racked his brain trying to think of what he should do from hereon, when his attention was drawn to something peculiar in his peripheral vision.

"Wait a moment..." Stunned, he carefully scrutinized the wall’s surface, his eyes darting over every inch. Imagine his surprise when he discovered a half-circle carving, barely discernible against the paint.

T–This was...

"A door ciit!" Jumping in excitement, Gu Luoxin turned to the one-eyed mouse, asking in a haste, "Caen, look at this! Isn’t this a door right here?!"

Caen came over and examined the wall before him, only to show a look of astonishment. "You’re right..." he gasped in surprise. "This is most likely a door! But how? I... I didn’t remember this ever existing at all ciit!"

As the King and the supreme ruler of the palace, it was only natural for him to be familiar with every nook and cranny, especially a sensitive area like the prison chamber. As if it wasn’t odd enough, the door was built extremely small to the extent where people wouldn’t have paid any attention to it.

Instead, it seemed more suitable to be a door for... mice or any small creatures.

There was only one explanation: this door must have been constructed after Caen transformed into a mouse. In other words, it was likely the Queen’s doing!

Both Gu Luoxin and Caen arrived at the same conclusion almost simultaneously. And as soon as they did, Caen immediately squared his shoulders and ready to break down the door, only to be held back by Gu Luoxin. "Wait, wait— are you really going to enter just like this ciit?!"

"Otherwise?" Caen retorted with furrowed brows. "You said someone is crying on the other side. Whoever is confined here must be connected to her in some way. If I want to bring her down, I need to gather as much information as possible ciit!"

Alright, that was completely reasonable, Gu Luoxin thought. If Shen Nianzu was here, he would likely make the same decision too. After all, every little thing that happened inside the Cycle could potentially hold the key to achieve the main task.

Gu Luoxin understood it in his mind, yet his frightened heart just didn’t want to cooperate. Hell, who in their right mind would deliver themselves straight into the unknown? What if it was a death trap? He was not the protagonist with golden fingers and plot armors in manhwas who could turn dire situations to his advantage!

However, Gu Luoxin took a deep breath and forced himself to suppress that fear. If he wanted to get out of this Cycle alive, he had to get through this first!

"Okay," he acquiesced. "You... step back ciit. I will go in first."

Caen was taken aback by that offer, but he still complied and offered the space to Gu Luoxin. Of course, Gu Luoxin didn’t make this request because he was a saint or a self-sacrificing fool, but simply because his chances of survival were higher than Caen. After all, he still had his props and skill card, and his hunch told him that he should do his best to keep Caen alive until the end of the Cycle.

Taking a deep breath, Gu Luoxin positioned himself in front of the little door, spat on his front paws, and exerted all of his strength to break down the door... only to roll inside when the door gave way easily under his weight.

Gu Luoxin was utterly dumbfounded. What the hell, this door wasn’t locked at all!

But soon his confusion morphed into bafflement and astonishment as he took in the space before him. "Woah..." he breathed in awe. Unlike the little inconspicuous door, the interior was surprisingly spacious, especially in his current perspective. The circular chamber was built with brick walls, while a soft ray of moonlight poured in through a high window, casting a gentle glow over the surroundings.

As he looked around, Gu Luoxin was gobsmacked when he saw that the space was empty! There was nary a person in sight... so who’s the one crying?!

"Look up ciit!"

Caen’s alarmed voice snapped him back to attention, prompting him to raise his gaze. There, suspended from the ceiling by a chain embedded in the bricks, hung a small cage. It reminded Gu Luoxin awfully of a bird cage, and he realized with a start that... the crying sounds had come from there!

"Who..." a delicate voice, thick with nasal tone, echoed as a small head poked out from between the metal bars. "Who is it?"

"You..." Gu Luoxin’s eyes flew wide in shock as he beheld the little creature in the cage whose size was no larger than an adult human’s palm. Bright blonde hair, exquisite features, a pair of glittering wings behind her back, wearing a soft green dress with a dazzling halo that enveloped her entire body— all those traits looked strikingly familiar to him.

He blurted out in disbelief, "Aren’t you Tinker Bell ciit?!"

"Tink— what?" The little fairy blinked her beautiful tear-filled eyes at him, looking particularly pitiful and lovely. "I’m afraid you have mistaken me for someone else. My name is Lumina, but perhaps you know me as... the fairy godmother."
