Chapter 123: Calling Yoon-Ah

Chapter 123: Calling Yoon-Ah

The text message was just a simple hi, and nothing else.

That was weird.

When Mythos agents were on a mission, our loved ones could only contact us in case of emergencies and through special permission in the Pandora app on their phones they had to use.

Did something happen?

Hmm... Given that the message was a bit on the positive side, and it passed unto me, who was still on a mission, that probably meant everything was okay. If it were an emergency, Mythos wouldn’t let the message reach us for fear that it may result in us failing the mission. Besides, if it were an emergency, they would have responded sooner and helped Yoon-Ah. Assistant Chief Athena couldn’t possibly pull off the same thing she did last time, given Agent Helios’ demands.

I got nervous for a moment but thinking that, I calmed down and replied immediately to Yoon-Ah.

"Hello, Yoon-Ah," I typed in. "How are you?"

But then, I changed my mind and erased it. I decided to call her instead.

Ring. Ring. Ring.

"Hello?" Yoon-Ah carefully answered on the other line.

She must have thought I was another Mythos agent first. That usually happens when I’m on a mission. Another Mythos agent in charge of taking care of our family would call them to give updates or anything they needed.

But then again, Yoon-Ah didn’t know I was on a mission. So perhaps the reason why her message went through was that she wasn’t supposed to know that I was on a mission. I don’t know anymore. The way they work in that department had always been a mystery to me.

"Yoon-Ah’ya, it’s me. What’s up?"

"Oh! Ye-Ji’ya! You’re awake so early in the morning."

"Of course I am. Well, it’s a habit," I replied. "And you? Why are you awake so early in the morning?"

That’s right. It was still dawn. The sun was barely up on the horizon.

"Well, my ever so kind mother asked me to buy something. They were baking, and they ran out of eggs."

"You’re alone again?" I asked, sounding a little angry.

"Nope, don’t worry. Your husband’s bodyguards are with me," Yoon-Ah replied, sounding unamused. "You should see our neighbors giving me the looks. Some kids even asked if I’m a celebrity or something. When I said no, they gave the eyes! Some kids they are. Hmp!"

"Ha-ha-ha. Sorry about that—but it’s for your safety."

"You’re just freaking out and being overprotective, that’s what."

"Hey. Is that the reason why you messaged me? To talk me out of those bodyguards?" I asked, raising my eyebrows. "Because if it is, I’m afraid you can’t convince me."

"Ye-Ji’yaaaaaa," Yoon-Ah groaned from the other line.

I could imagine her pouting so cutely and stomping her feet while walking—she sounded like she was still outside, probably walking back home. I could hear her footsteps and the other people passing by talking random stuff.

"Please, tell them to stop," she pressed on, pulling an "aegyo" on me (a Korean term for a cute display of affection often expressed through a cute voice, changes to speech, facial expressions, or gestures). "Hm? Please? I can’t take it anymore. I’m an introvert, used to being alone, and you know—just the normal boring human stuff. I’m not used to having so many people around me."

"Ughh... Yoon-Ah’ya..." I grunted and shook my head. "But wait a minute. They should be guarding you from afar."

"Well, yes, they are literally far from me BUT... I could see them, you know. I’m pretty observant myself. Maybe I can apply as an agent, too."

"Oh, please, no. It’s dangerous. Anyway, I should tell them to try and hide properly."

"There aren’t many places to hide in here, you know."

"Hmm... I guess you’re right. You have sharp eyes, too—like me. Still, it’s a NO. You better get used to them."

"So unfaaaaiiiirrr... You’re being mean to me."

"No, I’m not. It’s for your safety."

"Hmp!"

She turned silent for a moment. Seriously, was this truly the only reason she messaged me? Ha-ha-ha. So funny. How I wished the only problems I had were her problems.

"Yoon-Ah’ya," I called her name, trying to stop myself from laughing, "if this is the only reason for your message earlier—"

"Nope! That’s not all."

"Oh, okay. What is it then?"

"Weeell..." she paused for a long while before continuing. "Actually... Yeah, that’s it."

That was weird. It was like she wanted to say something but thought not to say it instead. Thinking that, I pressed on.

"Are you sure?"

"Hm... Yeah, I’m sure. It was probably nothing."

"You can still tell me."

"Nah. It’s okay. Thank you for calling. I miss you!"

"You’re changing the topic."

"No, I’m not."

"I can’t believe this best friend of mine is learning how to lie to me."

"I wasn’t lying!"

"Really?"

"Really!"

"Alright. If you say so," I conceded. "In case you need anything, don’t hesitate to order those bodyguards around. Ask them to buy stuff instead of you—that’s fine."

"Oh? Really? I could do that?"

"Ha-ha-ha. Of course, you can."

"Ke-ke-ke. In that case, I WILL do that."

"Still so lazy."

"I am, and I’m proud of it."

"Ha-ha-ha! You never fail to make me laugh. I miss you, too."

"Awww... Come and visit me again soon, okay? I know you’re so busy with your lovey-dovey time with your dear husband but don’t forget me, okay? I’m still your first husband."

"Ha-ha-ha! Alright, I won’t."

"Good. Oh well, I won’t disturb your loving relationship any longer. Goodbye!"

"Take care."

"You, too!"

"I will."

With that, our call ended. Good thing it wasn’t something serious. As for me, I need to get back to work.

[Yoon-Ah POV]

"Haaah..." I sighed deeply as soon as the call ended.

’It’s okay, Yoon-Ah. You did the right thing by not telling her. Ye-Ji’ya is already busy, and she’s finally living a happy life with her husband. There’s no need to worry her over something you THINK you saw.’

I tried to tell myself that, over and over.

"Yeah... that’s right. It’s nothing serious," I whispered to myself, trying to convince myself despite the many noises in my head.

But then... "that" image was stuck in my mind.

And somehow, my instincts kept telling me I was right.
