Chapter 118: Tailing Min-Su (Part 3)

[Music Recommendation: "Play with Fire" feat. Yacht Money by Sam Tinnesz]

As my rising temper kept flooding my mind with mean thoughts, I noticed something happening by the school’s entrance gate in my peripheral vision. Luxurious cars started coming in and out of the school like a carousel—stopping by, picking up the kids, and then moving along. My eyes quickly shifted in its direction.

Some of the cars didn’t go inside. Instead, they waited at the parking space outside the gate, and the kids went to them. There were also servants who fetched them and took care of them.

I quickly tapped on the side of the shades, pushing a button that enabled me to zoom in my view. The dark shades we wore were another device from Mythos that had the functions of a telescope. I quietly watched and carefully observed the whole area until I finally found Min-Su—the target we needed to protect.

Seeing him in person, Min-Su looked like a typical cute boy with dark hair and brown eyes. But, unlike other boys his age, he looked prim and proper, wearing his still perfectly fixed and ironed out uniform and standing with a perfect posture for a child.

"Agent Selene and Agent Helios in position," I whispered to my smartwatch, almost inaudibly. "Target Min-Su locked on. Will begin pursuit momentarily."

"Enabling Mode: Venatus," Fae showed those words on my smartwatch.

Mode "Venatus" which simply meant "hunt" or "chase" was the mode we use when in pursuit of someone. It had the same effect as Mode Umbra—disabling all camera or audio devices or anything that could record us while doing the mission—but instead of setting it in a specific area, the effect "moves" along with us. Normal people won’t notice it since it would only block us out—the agents. But for them, their devices would work normally like nothing happened.

Aside from that, once Mode Venatus was enabled, all agents within proximity would be notified. For those who were free, they could standby and help once an emergency ping was raised by us. Unless we do so, they won’t come. And for those doing another mission, for the sake of not interrupting each other’s mission, the one with the lower ranked mission had to give way to those doing a higher one—in this case, everyone should give way to us.

To ensure the privacy of our S-rank mission, our identities and details of our mission wouldn’t be shared with the agents nearby. But they should be able to not get in our way and do it flawlessly, given all the protocols of Mythos during such scenarios.

"Finally, time for some action," Agent Helios smirked as he stretched his body and got up from his seat. "Let’s go, babe."

"Tsk. Shut up."

And so, we got up from our seats, leaving the payment for the bill on the table. Then, we went to our motorcycle, on standby to go. Agent Helios gave one helmet to me while he put on his mask once again and removed his shades to replace them with the helmet. I did the same thing while stealthily observing the target.

"I’m driving, and you prepare in case of any shootout," Agent Helios said in a murmur.

We always had to talk, act, and move stealthily whenever on a mission since we never knew who was observing us from far away.

"Yeah, let’s do that. Shooting is my highest rated skill after all."

"And yet you lost to me."

"Not for long," I scoffed. "Don’t be too complacent on being on top, partner. I will soon replace you in that position."

Agent Helios chuckled.

"Whatever you say, babe. I look forward to it."

Soon enough, I saw the kidnappers arrive. They used another fake luxurious car—a limo. Like bags, clothes, and accessories, cars could be counterfeited nowadays too. They did it by copying the outer shell and appearance of the luxurious cars—so flawlessly that it was hard to tell.

But then again, for a car lover and expert like me, I could easily tell. From the slight difference in shade versus the released color to the sound of the engine—yes, the engines were the one that makes luxury cars stand out—I could easily see the difference. Any cheaper materials wouldn’t be able to copy such perfection unless the same materials were used.

"Target Min-Su captured," Agent Helios reported through his helmet—another Mythos device. "Beginning pursuit in 3... 2... 1...."

VROOOM! VROOOM!

Agent Helios started the engine of the motorcycle, and I quickly hopped on his back while removing my shades and putting the mask and the helmet on. He drove ahead of the kidnappers, so they would not easily guess that we were following them. Given the layout of the city, we could easily guess where they would head to—the main road outside the city. Where they would go after that was what we didn’t know.

"Make sure to hold on tightly, babe," Agent Helios said, turning his head towards me a little. "You should know how I drive by now—wild and crazy."

I could hear his laughter despite the sound of the many engines around. Ugh. We’re on a mission, and he still finds ways to irritate me.

"Yeah, yeah. You’ve been a crazy jerk from the start anyway. What’s new?"

"Ha-ha! Come on then, hold on to me tightly. You can hug me. Don’t be shy."

"Shut up and focus on the road."

"How stingy. This partner needs a little motivation, you know."

"You already got your motivation earlier, so just drive if you don’t want me to stab you instead of hug you!" I snapped at him. Seriously, this guy!

"Ha-ha-ha! So feisty. That’s right. That was really nice," he teased. "Thanks for the foot massage, babe. I shall do my best to serve you today."

"You better!"

’Deep breaths, Kim Ye-Ji. Deep breaths.’

Ugh! He’s pissing me off.

When we finally reached the main road leading outside the city, we slowed down and let the kidnapper’s car go ahead of us. As part of Mythos’ training, Agent Helios drove in an inconspicuous manner by hiding from larger vehicles to avoid being spotted in the side mirror of the kidnapper’s car. That way, they wouldn’t easily think that we were following them. Another was by carefully switching lanes. Of course, other drivers won’t appreciate that, but sorry guys, we’re on a mission to save a child.

The road was long, and we had to pass a couple of tunnels while following the kidnappers. Soon enough, the cars and other vehicles we were with earlier diminished since they split out on different roads wherever they were going. If this continues, they would soon find out that we were following them. Before that happens, we need to know where their base was located.

However, not everything goes according to plan.

Probably noticing that we were on them, the kidnappers started to drive faster and even tried to confuse us along the way. But we were Mythos agents—such tactics wouldn’t work on us.

When it didn’t work, alas, the car’s windows opened, and on both sides, two men holding guns started firing at us!

BANG! BANG! BANG!

VROOM!

Agent Helios quickly swerved and evaded their shots. We were on the road that was not very much traveled, so barely any other vehicles were around.

’This is perfect. I can shoot wherever I want.’

I pushed a button on the side of the motorcycle we were on, and it expanded, revealing the different weapons we had on the side compartment. Mythos’ motorcycle wasn’t bulky for no reason after all.

Grabbing a high-powered rifle, I quickly aimed back at them and shot their arms. I wanted to kill them instantly, but we still needed them for interrogation purposes back in the base. As soon as I hit a fatal point between their shoulders and arm, their guns fell from their hands.

"Agghh!!!" they both screamed in pain.

But they didn’t stop. Another pair came out and shot us, this time with a heavily powered gun. Their driver also started to speed up and swerved from left to right, trying to evade my shots. Too bad Agent Helios was a better driver, and our motorcycle was faster than theirs.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

VROOM!

While I kept shooting back at them, Agent Helios sped up and drew us closer to their car. Now, we were side to side with the kidnappers’ car, and I pointed my gun at one of their comrade’s heads. The others looked petrified and stopped shooting for a moment.

"What are you all doing? Shoot them now!" one of them said.

"But she got Billy!"

"I don’t care! Shoot!"

"Oh, look who’s so heartless here," I scoffed at that man who turned out to be the driver.

"Don’t damage the car, babe."

"I know."

Then, I took another gun—a handgun in my free hand—and pointed it toward the heartless driver. Agent Helios, probably reading what I had in mind, sped up again until we were beside the driver’s seat.

In the most menacing tone I could, I told him...

"Pull over or say your prayers."
