Chapter 57: 57. Slayer Schools

"...Fair point."

Before Charlotte could say more, a screech cut through the air.

A massive blur descended from the sky, crashing into the centre of the training field like a meteor. Dust and wind exploded outward, causing the students nearby to shield their eyes and stumble backwards.

From the crater stood a towering man, muscles bulging, chest bare beneath a loose black coat. His thick, dark-blonde hair flowed like a lion’s mane, wild and untamed.

He threw his head back and let out a boisterous laugh.

"BAHAHAHA! Now that seems to have grabbed everyone’s attention!"

The murmurs quieted as every cadet turned toward him, completely stunned.

The man grinned widely, scanning the crowd.

"My name is Instructor Garrick. I’ll be your combat instructor for this year. I’ll be teaching you actual combat here, so I’m not here to babysit you with mana theory or spoon-feed you foundational garbage."

He stomped his foot once, causing the earth to crack.

"I’m here to teach you how to fight. How to survive. How to kill."

Garrick paused for a second

"Why do you think they call us Slayers?" Asked Garrick

"Not knights. Not heroes. Not champions. But slayers!"

Garrick gestured to the entire field.

"We’re called slayers because this is the best description of our job. To Kill. Our job is to kill void demons and demonic beasts, and cultists as much as you can. You simply must kill them before they kill you."

The cadets listening stiffened. The jovial and casual tone in Garrick’s voice had disappeared, causing the vibe around to quietly shift.

"No illusions. No moral high ground. This isn’t about glory or prestige. It’s about violence, tactics, and survival. And that begins... with killing techniques."

Garrick cracked his neck and pointed at them all.

"You’re all Tier 3 Tempered Core by now or should be. You’ve probably learned fancy moves from your clans or your overpriced tutors."

A few cadets glanced away, caught.

"Well, forget that flowery trash. I don’t care how pretty your footwork is or how many flaming sword names you memorised."

Garrick’s eyes gleamed. "Because here at Nexus Academy, we categorise combat into five Slayer Schools and this is what matters."

He raised his hand, and a chime rang out.

All the students’ smartwatches lit up simultaneously, flashing a holographic interface.

"Check your screens," Garrick’s said. "These are the standard techniques of each Slayer School. You’ll learn one or more depending on your path."

『Velos School – Path of Speed』

Tactics: Swift movements, critical precision, battlefield mobility.

Technique:『Slayer Sword Style – Tempest Edge (B)』

A lightning-fast dash with a blade strike that leaves slicing wind arcs in its wake. The enemy is cut before they even realise you’ve moved.

『Breaker School – Path of Power』

Combat Focus: Brute force, overwhelming offence.

Tactics: Heavy weapons, destructive impact, armour-piercing strikes.

Technique:

『Slayer Sword Style – Earthbreaker Charge! (B)』

The user charges forward like a battering ram, shattering defenses and scattering foes. Each blow cracks the earth beneath it.

『Aegis School – Path of Endurance』

Combat Focus: Defence, zoning, counter-pressure.

Tactics: Hold the line, punish aggression, control space.

Technique:

『Slayer Sword Style – Edge of Aegis! (B)』

A fortified stance absorbs incoming strikes, followed by a swift, calculated counter to reclaim ground and deny momentum.

『Vigil School – Path of Patience』

Combat Focus: Counters, timing, punish windows.

Tactics: Wait-and-strike, reactive precision, psychological pressure.

Technique:

『Slayer Sword Style – Stillblade Requiem! (B)』

The user waits, poised. At the enemy’s first misstep, a fatal counter is delivered — swift, surgical, and perfectly timed.

『Obscura School – Path of Deception』

Combat Focus: Misdirection, illusions, unpredictability.

Tactics: Feints, afterimages, attacking from unexpected angles.

Technique:

『Slayer Sword Style – Ghost Edge Mirage! (B)』

The user creates a spectral afterimage of their blade to draw the enemy’s attention. A mirage of a blade distracts the opponent while the real strike lands from their blind spot.

There was barely any noise in the room as each student was glued to the screen, reading all the data

"The Slayer Academy would grant every cadet a single free technique upon entry." Said Garrick

"But learning more, whether that be more advanced techniques or ones from other schools, required Slayer Credits, a special currency earned through academy challenges, real-world missions, and individual ranking. Naturally, the Rank 1 cadet will receive the most credits by default."

" And of course, rankings won’t remain permanent. They can be changed with missions, academic achievements, and most directly, combat challenges. If a cadet wanted to rise in rank, they could challenge someone above them in an official duel. The winner would take the defeated rank and would earn the credit they would normally receive"

As Instructor Garrick explained this, Licht could feel the greedy stares beginning to pile on him.

This was to be expected. He was the Rank 1 cadet, so Instructor Garrick’s words had just put a large target on his back.’

But these greedy cadets needed to be reminded just who they were planning on targeting.

But one cold glance from him was enough to make most of them look away.

Normally, that might not have worked with dozens of ambitious cadets eyeing him like a stepping stone, but Licht’s reputation had already done most of the work for him.

He’d fought students in public, thrown others through walls, and the ones who didn’t end up in the hospital now trailed him like frightened dogs. From any angle, Licht didn’t look like someone you challenged. He looked like someone you survived.

Instructor Garrick let out a laugh.

"Alright, I know some of you are eager to fight already and start climbing. But first, pick your free technique. Start learning something before you can get too confident to even think."

After explaining the Slayer Technique system, Instructor Curtis stepped back and let the students mingle and discuss amongst themselves.

Licht was just beginning to consider his own direction and which technique to choose when he felt several gazes land on him.

He turned his head slightly and saw Riven, Charlotte, and Thane watching him with a mix of hesitation and expectation.
