Chapter 58: 58. Choice

Licht frowned.

"What do you want?" he asked, voice cold but calm.

Riven stepped forward. "Well... since you’re the Rank 1 cadet, we thought... maybe you could give us advice?"

Licht blinked. "Advice?"

That caught him off-guard.

Giving advice? That was the same as handing someone a weapon they could eventually use on you. Why would anyone do that?

But then Licht realised that it was probably only him who thought that way.

These cadets still believed this was just school . That they were in some sort of advanced training program before real danger started.

Licht knew better. The blood-soaked future waiting for them didn’t give you time to prepare. You were either ready or you died.

All kinds of craziness would happen here at this seemingly secure academy in the future so Licht couldn’t be as casual as the rest of the students

He stared at the three cadets who stood before him, then let his gaze fall on Riven.

Riven was already someone he was planning on bringing into his team anyway, so it wouldn’t be strange to help him choose his future path

"Fine. I’ll start with you," he said, nodding at Riven. "Pick 『Earthbreaker Charge (B)』."

Riven blinked in confusion.

"What? I thought you’d tell me to go for something from either the Vigil or Obscura schools of combat, not the breaker school. Those 2 schools are better for control and restraint, right? I thought it’d ... y’know... help me suppress the other side of me."

"When did I say that side of you was a weakness?" asked Licht, tilting his head,

"Huh?"

Riven was confused

"But didn’t you say that my technique was my weakness?"

I think you’re confused about something," said Licht,

"Your weakness isn’t the personality that likes fighting. It’s the fact that your technique burns your own blood until you’re dead. That new personality, the one that doesn’t care about pain and keeps going even when it’s suicidal, that’ not a weakness, that’s yourtrump card."

iven naturally didn’t agree with Licht’s assessment. The thought that having a madman lurking in the back of his mind could somehow be a benefit still felt deeply wrong.— firm, steady, and strangely reassuring.

"Let’s be honest. With the way your personality is now, you won’t last long as a slayer."

Riven deflated like a popped balloon.

"...Right."

He wanted to object, but he still knew that Licht was telling the truth

"Listen," Licht said, his voice low. "I’m not telling you to lose control. I’m telling you to learn when to use it.

"It’ll keep you alive until we fix the flaws in your technology and iron out your personality issues."

Riven actually thought about Licht’s words for a while before bringing up his smartwatch and choosing a technique, and after Licht finished speaking to Riven, Charlotte stepped forward.

"What about me?" she asked.

Licht heard this and paused for a while to think.

Unlike Riven, Charlotte wasn’t a coward.

She was already in the top ten amongst the first-year cadets and was a proven fighter with field experience and sharp instincts.

She didn’t waver or hesitate in combat, so she really wasn’t someone who needed handholding.

That’s why her asking Licht for advice was, in all honesty, quite strange.

’Is she testing me?’

Licht didn’t forget Charlotte still saw hm as outer world void demon that passed a human. Even if she regarded Licht as the benefactor who killed her arch nemesis, it wasn’t strange to be monitoring him closley.

That probably explained why she’s become so close all of a sudden as well’ Thought Licht

These thoughts passed by Licht’s mind in a flash, and after a moment’s thought, Licht answered.

"Pick 『Tempest Edge (B)』. It suits you."

Charlotte heard this and raised an eyebrow.

"You know I already practice a Velos School technique — 『 Rushing Thunder God.』

"I know," Licht replied.

"I know, and that’s exactly why I’m telling you to take Tempest Edge. With your reflexes and another Velos school technique to act as base foundation, you’ll pickup『Tempest Edge 』 quickly. And more importantly , it won’t clash with your current style."

"But doesn’t that limit me?" asked Charlotte.

"Learning two techniques from the same school is the same as narrowing my scope, wouldn’t it be better to diversify?"

Licht shook his head.

"Not yet. Right now, you don’t need variety; you need synergy. If you suddenly jump into some Aegis or Obscura school techniques, it’ll throw off your flow. Your entire style is based on speed and initiative. Layering Velos on Velos lets you chain techniques under pressure without breaking flow."

Charlotte frowned slightly, processing it.

Seeing Charlotte’s hesitation, Licht continued

"I’m not saying don’t branch out later," Licht added. "Just build a strong base first, and once you’ve mastered using one school fluidly, then you can start weaving in others."

He looked her directly in the eye.

"You’re too talented to waste time spreading your focus thin," said Licht

Charlotte crossed her arms.

"I’d agree... but I don’t see much future in chasing single-minded synergy with my technique arsenal."

Licht shook his head. "Not if you have the right Mana Circle and can use more than one technique at once."

Her eyes narrowed. "Wait. You were serious? You can actually use multiple techniques at once?"

Charlotte narrowed her eyes. "Wait. You were being serious about that?"

"I don’t joke," Licht replied flatly. "Especially about combat."

She almost scoffed, but she quickly stopped herself. A few days ago, she would’ve rolled her eyes and walked away.

The Licht she knew was Arrogant, Delusional and incompetent, but now?

Now things were different.

Now she knew the Licht in front of her was a completely different entity from beyond the void, she just couldn’t dismiss his words with complete confidence

"...Still," muttered Charlotte in a barely audible voice, "why would he give humans this kind of technique? That’s like... handing a blade to the enemy."

She voiced out her thoughts, not expecting him to respond.

But he did...
