Chapter 56: 56. Tilly

Licht remained expressionless.

He had indeed overreacted a bit the day before, especially when Charlotte wasn’t even the one at fault, but admitting that openly? Not a chance.

He tilted his head slightly. "Is that all you came to say?"

Charlotte’s face flushed deeper.

’fuck! Why is this guy so rude?’

Charlotte had just come to apologise, so why did Licht have to show his nasty old personality again

Now that it had come to this, Charlotte was too embarrassed yo just say she came to apologise, she needed something else

"N-no! I didn’t just come to say this I also came to... see Tilly."

Licht sneered. "You think just because you want to see her, I’ll hand her over? That’s not happening. beside’s she doesn’t want to see you."

"How do you know?"

"Because I’m her owner. Isn’t it obvious?"

"Prove it," Charlotte said, folding her arms.

Licht’s brow twitched.

"...No."

"Oh, I get it. You’re just scared because she likes me more. Im the one who gave her a real name when her original owner just wanted to use her as a shield"

That did it.

With a confident s,orlt, Licht raised his hand. A faint ripple in the air appeared, and thenTilly materialized,

With a flash of silver mist she curled cutely around Licht’s shoulder in her compact, more adorable form. She stretched, then leapt off and landed gracefully in Licht’s arms.

Licht gently scratched her chin, prompting a soft purr from the creature.

Seeing the familiar creature, Charlotte’s eyes lit up. She stepped forward and stretched out her arms.

"Come here, Tilly!"

Licht heard this and just shook his head

"It’s futile, I’m her owner, so—"

But before Licht could finish speaking, Tilly glanced at Charlotte, then leapt into her arms.

Charlotte beamed and turned toward Licht smugly.

"See? Told you she wanted to see me!"

Tilly looked up at Licht, expecting approval but all she saw was his cold stare.

Suddenly nervous, Tilly wilted in Charlotte’s arms.

As being formed from a remnant soul so her intelligence really wasn’t the best, but she realised that she messed up this time.

Charlotte scowled. "What’s with that face? This is why people think you haven’t changed. You’ve still got that same annoying expression."

Licht gave her a flat look and yanked Tilly back without warning, cradling her again as she purred apologetically in Licht’s ar,s.

"Just because you’re angry that I’m right doesn’t mean you get to steal her," Charlotte snapped.

"That’s petty. You hear me? Petty!"

But Licht simply ignored her, petting Tilly like nothing had happened.

Nearby, Riven adjusted his glasses and rubbed his eyes.

’This can’t be real.’ Thought Riven

Only yesterday, Licht had pummeled him into a blood-soaked pulp and left him for dead. And Charlotte? She was the one who shouted at the entrance ceremony that Licht was a fraud, a hoax — practically calling for his public execution.

And now they were... bickering over a spirit beast?

Wasn’t Licht supposed to have tried to kill her, too?

What the hell is going on with these people?

But then Riven realised he didn’t appear too look all that different either.

He, too, had been left beaten and bloodied by Licht. And now here he was, walking beside him like a reluctant ally.

From the outside, it looked insane.

Most of the Slayer cadets at the training field kept their heads down and eyes averted. Licht’s reputation had spread quickly — especially since he was supposedly under investigation. Yet here he was, surrounded by people he’d nearly killed, all acting strangely... familiar.

To most observers, it looked like a group held together by intimidation and fear.

And most people wanted no part of it.

All but one.

Melinda, standing at the edge of the crowd, had spotted Licht the moment he entered the grounds. Her jaw clenched at the sight of him — and then at the sight of Charlotte walking right beside him.

That girl... she was calling him a fraud two days ago. Now she’s clinging to him like a puppy?

Melinda’s eyes narrowed.

In her mind, there was only one explanation: coercion. Just like what Licht had done to her. Manipulation, threats, humiliation.

She wouldn’t let another victim fall under his control.

Just as she was about to step forward, a firm hand gripped her wrist.

"Don’t do it, Melinda."

She turned sharply.

Oren, tall with sharp green eyes, met her gaze seriously.

"Why not?" she demanded. "You want me to just let him keep doing whatever he wants?"

"I’m not saying that," Oren said carefully. "I’m saying just wait."

He glanced at Licht in the distance with a gloating look in his eyes.

"His position in the Valtier family isn’t as strong as it looks. He’s just a mad dog lashing out right now... but his downfall’s coming. Just trust me."

Melinda hesitated.

Oren’s grip on her wrist was firm, but not forceful; it was only enough to stop her, leaving the final decision in her hands. Melinda looked at Oren’s calm and confident eyes and finally let out a frustrated breath, choosing to trust him... for now.

"...Fine," she said eventually. But her eyes never left Licht. Just because she said she wouldn’t go fight him straight away didn’t stop her from glaring daggers in Licht’s direction.

As Slayers, both Charlotte and Licht were particularly sensitive to hostile intent. So naturally, when Melinda’s death glare bored into his back, they both turned around, quickly locking eyes with the scowling girl on the far end of the field.

They shared a single thought.

’That girl’s seriously weird.’

Charlotte raised a brow as she turned toward Licht "You know her?"

"Unfortunately," Licht replied

"She doesn’t seem like a fan. What did you do this time?" Asked Charlote jokingly

Licht heard this and scowled.

"I didn’t do anything, but people seem to have n obsession with hating me for no reason. So how many people do you think I’m on good terms with?"

As Licht said, this Charlotte guiltily, shrank her shoulders as she replied in only a whisper

"...Fair point."
