Chapter 75: Friends Turns Out To Be A Foe...

"So where was your father?" Acantha heard her father ask Evander as they went inside the house while some people were fixing it.

"Ah, father has to meet someone important, as he said," Evander said as he took a sip of the coffee that was served to them.

"I was wondering where Mildred was." Acantha asked as she looked around and pretended to look for Mildred.

"I thought she was caught in the fire inside your room." She heard what her father said.

"I already checked Lady Acantha’s room, and there was no body that was found," Jarnus said as he looked at them, while Helion, on the other hand, was just quiet and seemed to be observing things.

Acantha saw at the corner of her eyes that Evander clenched his fist as he looked unease.

"She must be terrified, but how did she manage to get out if she didn’t go through the main door? I knew Mildred was terrified of heights, and jumping from the balcony won’t be a choice for her." Acantha said as she put her face on her hand as she acted like she was confused.

"M-maybe Mildred panicked and went down there," Evander said as he looked flustered at what he said.

He stood up as soon as he finished drinking his coffee and looked like he was in a hurry.

"I am sorry, but Father was expecting that I wouldn’t be long," Evander said as he was apologizing at them as he walked his way out of the house.

Acantha watched him, as he seems to be in a rush the way he walks out of the place.

"Have you seen that, father?" Acantha asked as she looked at her father.

Her father frowned at her and asked, "What?" She thought he had gotten the message when he had winked at her earlier.

"Evander might be the one who was pretending to be Mildred," she said, which made them stiffen at where they were sitting.

"Are you saying that Evander was the fake, Mildred?" the duke asked as he looked at her while frowning. "There’s no way he was the traitor; beside, I almost raised him with his father." He continued as he looked at her.

"The fake book I made in case someone will try to get it; it was on his clothes," Acantha said as she sighed at him. He knew that the duke was very close to Evander, as his father was his best friend.

"I saw it too," Flamear said, which made the duke look at him.

"If he was really the traitor, but why? I don’t understand his reason to be our enemy." He asked as he was confused and still in the indenial stage of accepting truth.

"That’s, I don’t know, you didn’t have any feud with them, weren’t you?" She asked him, while he seemed to be so confused that he was lost in his own thoughts.

"Father," Acantha said as she tried to get his attention to her.

"What was it you were saying?" The duke asked, which made her sighed.

"I asked if you did any thing that might offend them and turn against you." She asked as he looked at him.

"No, Iivan and I were good; we were even helping the empe-" Her father said, which made him stop.

"Well, fuck it. If his son was the traitor, then we should warn the emperor. I don’t think Iivan was even aware of what his son was doing, as that boy was always never around when he went out from the academy," the duke said as he looked at them.

"I already did inform father." Helion said as he looked so serious at the moment.

"It seems like you don’t know him that well, duke? thought you were all by his side?" Helion said as he looked at the duke, who glared at him.

"You went to the academy with him, right?" Acantha looked at her father as she asked. Helion was now crossing his legs and his arms while he was looking at her father.

"Very well spotted there, duke." Helion answered to her father before turning to his side, where Jarnus was sitting on the other chair. " But you forgot that Jarnus was also there with us," he said as he pointed at Jarnus, who was looking at her father.

If they went to the same academy where they studied together, but why does it seem like they didn’t know each other personally? She remembers that the first time they met, Helion didn’t even know who Evander was, so what was she hearing right now?

"I thought you didn’t know him." Acantha asked as she was raising her brows at Helion, who looks like he was taken back at what she said.

"No, I personally don’t know him," Helion said as he sighed while he was looking at her. "But you know, the academy was just a small place, and every person who was there will surely know about rumors that were spreading inside the academy," he continued as he looked at Jarnus, who was just nodding at him.

"Rumors?" Her father asked as he looked like he was curious about the said rumor that Helion was talking about.

"I am surprised that it didn’t reach your ears, duke." Helion said as he looked at her father with no emotions on his face again.

"I’m not someone who likes hearing some gossip from school," the duke answered as he glared again at Helion, who was now sipping on his cup.

"I didn’t remember it until I learned about his name; Evander was known as Evan in the school; just like those kids who like studying, he was isolating himself from everyone, and he did even have some feud with some of the students when the other student asked him about something," Helion said as they were just listening to him.

"Based on the other student, he saw Evander was doing some magic without using any mana stones, which is rare as we all knew that aside from us and the Klartis, there was no one who could use magic. Even those magicians at the tower were relaying their magic to mana stones that they were using." Helion said as he looked at the duke, who was also looking at him, who was surprised at what he just heard—he never knew that Evander’s magic was ’n’t from the mana stones.

And why did his friend didn’t even bother to tell it to him?

"Why didn’t Iivan tell me about this?" She heard what her father said, as he seemed lost.

She could see the pain of betrayal in his eyes as he looked at the ceiling and was brushing his hair using his hands.

"Maybe the count was afraid for his son," Helion said as he shrugged his shoulders.

"Is he also Abanoon’s disciple?" Her father asked as he looked at her, like he looked so helpless.

Acantha knew how painful it was to be betrayed by people who you trust and treat as your family.

"No, I was wearing the necklace the whole time, and there was nothing strange on it," Acantha said as she showed the necklace she was wearing.

"If he is not the one that we were looking for, then what is his motive?" Helion said as he looked at everyone of them.

"That’s what we’re going to learn," Acantha said as she looked at them.

"Now, let’s focus on finding out where Evander hid Mildred." She continued as she gave them a serious look.

_______________

Helion sighed as he was looking at the outside of the palace. The duke told him that he should go home since he was already healed; as much as he wanted to stay and help finding Mildred, he needed to settle some things first with his family.

He was now walking his way to his mother’s palace, as he knew how worried she was for him when he left the palace.

Helion saw that the place seemed to be gloomy as he entered the place; he had already talked to his father, and he also told him that his mother was worried about him.

He was about to enter his mother’s room when he heard some noises.

"Stop crying, Your Highness," Helion heard someone say, whom he recognized as his mother’s head maid.

He tried to slightly open the door so they wouldn’t notice it.

"I didn’t know what to do anymore; first my son was missing, and now lady Noraya was sick." He heard his mother cry as the headmaid was comforting her.

"Do you think I am a bad mother to my son?" He heard her say, which made him feel bad as he didn’t know that his mother was feeling this one.

Helion was about to enter when he sensed some energy. He hid in one of the columns near the door, and he saw a man walk and enter his mother’s room.

He peeked to see who it was and there he saw Baron Abellarde, who looks awful.

"Your majesty." Helion saw as the baron bows his head to his mother as he greets her.

"Oh, it’s you, baron; you may rise." His mother said as she wiped her eyes.

"I was desperate now, your majesty. I needed your help. My daughter was sick because the prince didn’t show up, and she wanted to be with him." Helion clenched his fist at what he heard.

He was about to enter the room, when-
