Chapter 111: No.... It Can’t Be...
Chapter 111: No.... It Can’t Be...
Acantha was still on her bed, as she still couldn’t sleep knowing people might get harmed because she got selfish and took all that they said to her inside her head.
"Flamear." Acantha said as she stood from her bed and woke Flamear.
It was almost night, and she went to her room and stayed there the whole day, but she couldn’t sleep. It’s been exactly an hour since they heard that sound.
"I can’t let those things kill anyone." Acantha said as she went inside her closet and changed her clothes.
She looked at her room again before she teleported herself and Flamear to the capital, where she saw that the houses and even stalls were all closed; the place looked like a haunted ghost town.
"Has someone warned them?" Acantha said as she looked around and not seeing anyone on the street.
They continued on roaming when they heard some commotion came from not so far from where they were.
Acantha and Flamear followed the noise and she was surprised to see that there were some people who were already lying down on the ground and lifeless.
"Oh, what have I done?" Acantha asked as she was panicking in guilt as she saw the result of her not helping the people just because of her stupid emotions.
She was horrified at the scene.
Acantha saw something sparkling from nearby; it must have, but it seems still didn’t catch her and Flamear.
She made it explode as it might be a tool of their enemy.
After she broke it, Flamear and she headed inside the tavern.
"Watch out," Flamear said to her when she saw one of the black things coming for her.
She docked it, and " That was close," Acantha said as she saw the black thing.
They could still hear some screams from people who were running inside.
Flamear looked at the place and he settle on the center and-
There was a loud rowr that Acantha was sure was Flamear.
Everyone who was at the scene felt relief as they all sighed when the black things were gone.
"Thank you..."
"Thank you..." People said as they were all crying in relief most of them were men, and some are woman who were working inside the tavern, and even their cook was there.
Acantha looked at her back and saw that there were about ten people who lost their lives because of those things.
"Are they gone for good?" One of the women asked as she was shaking in fear.
Acantha looked at Flamear as she didn’t know how to answer the woman as she didn’t know about them either.
"No." Flamear said, which made Acantha look at him. Why didn’t he tell her about that thing in the beginning?
"What??" She said as she looked at him, asking if she heard him wrong.
"Those things can’t be killed easily; they can be gone now, but they can regenerate as they were made of black magic without a physical body aside from those dust forms.
"So, they can come back again?" the woman said as she looked terrified at what she heard.
"Yes, the least thing you should do is limit your time outside and when you see them, do not panic or make contact with them; they can sense your soul and they will suck it if they know that you are afraid of them." Flamear said, as he looked at everyone who was listening at him.
Did he just say different from what he had said to her?
"Death will follow you as it can sense your soul, but as long as you don’t look at it and avoid making contact, you will be safe, but it’s much safer not to go out from your house, and don’t open it when someone knocks and it isn’t saying anything." Flamear continued as he looked at everyone again this time.
The people just nodded at him, and Acantha was still hiding herself from everyone as she didn’t want them to know that the person they thought was the one who brought these things into the empire was the one who was helping them.
"Just be careful from now on." She said to them as she and Flamear disappeared from the place and went home.
When they went home, they decided to go to the dining room, but what was odd is that the place looked quiet; it was still early, though.
"Mildred?" Acantha called as she was going to ask where the duke was, but he was not there.
It was odd no one was answering her; she went to the hall and why does it seem like something happened?
Acantha felt her heart race.
No, no one was hurt...
She was about to turn to another hall when suddenly-
"M-my Lady." Acantha looked at Mildred, who was now looking like she had cried.
"What was wrong, Mildred?" Acantha asked as her heart was still beating rapidly. "Where’s Father?" She continued to ask as it was supposed to be dinner time, but why didn’t her father show up?
Acantha saw Mildred’s eyes became teary when she asked about the duke.
She didn’t know, but she felt like she lost her energy.
"Tell me where Father is." Acantha said as she looked at Mildred, who was now crying.
"M-my Lady..." She looked at where the voice came from and there she saw the three trusted knights of her father.
"Favian? Where’s my father?" Acantha asked as she was now feeling heavy in her heart.
The man looked at her and when she looked at his face, he looked devastated.
"I’m sorry, my lady." Fabian said that, which made Acantha break down.
"Don’t tell me, My ... F-father is gone?" Acantha asked, as she didn’t understand.
Her father was just here in the afternoon and was waiting for her to eat dinner.
No, it can’t be...
"W-what happened?" Acantha asked as tears were streaming down from her eyes.
Her hands were shaking in fear...
In fear of losing her father...
The only one who loves her, even if he was painted badly in the novel...
The duke had proved to her several times that he loved her...
Not even her real father in her world did love her as much as the duke loved Acantha that he willingly cut off ties from the imperial family.
"The duke and I, with some of our men, went into the capital as we heard that they needed some help. After what happened back then when they were having some rituals, the duke went to your room and saw that you weren’t there. That’s why he didn’t have the chance to bid his goodbye to you." Favian said, as his voice was shaking, while the other two were just bowing their heads.
"Everything was fine, not until those black things appeared. We saw one of the kids was shouting in fear and the duke rushed to her and helped her, and that’s when those things sucked the duke’s soul." Fabian said as he looked at her, full of sadness in his eyes.
"No..." Acantha said as she cried while Flamear went near to her, brushing his head on her, like he was comforting her.
She rushed to her father’s room and there she saw that he looked like those people from the tavern; his eyes were open, but there was no sign of life anymore.
"Father..." Acantha said as she was crying really hard, her heart was clenching in pain as she kept on crying...
"No, please get up from there." Acantha said as she was shaking her father’s shoulder.
"Please... You’re all that I had..." Acantha said and she could feel the others who followed her gasp as they were trying so hard not to cry too, just like her.
"My Lady... I know this isn’t the right time... but we need to inform the others about the situation, as you will be the one who will replace the duke..." She heard Fabian say it as she just nodded at him and cried.
The others left her while they were trying to give her space for her and her father.
She was sobbing while she was holding his hands...
His hands used to be so warm, and now they were very cold...
Now, she didn’t know where to pick herself up again...
She was still sobbing when suddenly she felt someone brushing her...
And there she saw Flamear, and suddenly she remembered something...
----------------------
Everyone in the infirmary was still busy.
Helion was looking and just observing everyone as he was making sure that they were all right.
He was about to leave when an envelope suddenly appeared floating.
It has the crest of the house of Solaris...
He has a bad feeling about it; the duke won’t send him some letters, not when he was still mad about everything...
He looked around and saw that Hernand also got the exact envelope that he has on his hand...
He looked at him when he opened it and saw that Hernand looked like he was about to cry.
Helion looked at the envelope again and opened it...
He was shocked about the content of the letter...
Now he understands why Hernand was acting like that...
He just lost one of his friends.
He couldn’t help thinking about how Acantha is right now... He wanted to be there for her...
Meanwhile...
Dion, who just read the letter about the duke’s passing, didn’t know what to do.
His best friend... is dead...
And worse, he died without having reconciled with each other.
Dion’s tears fell from his eyes as he looked at the letter again.
He turned to see his sleeping wife, who was not aware of what just had happened...
