Chapter 521: Chapter 500 One Opportunity

Because Gao Yi had already learned some information from Alexander, the impression upon meeting the slim, doll-faced Yuri again was completely different.

Previously, it was just hearsay about how formidable he was; now, seeing him in person, he indeed seemed extraordinary.

Yuri appeared slightly disheveled, his left sleeve soaked with blood. However, aside from that, there were no visible signs of him having been busy all night.

"Do you have a qualified doctor? I’ll give you half an hour to decide whether to join the fight. During that time, you can also patch up my wound. Is there anyone?"

Upon arriving at the hotel and seeing Gao Yi, Yuri’s first words were asking if there was a doctor.

Where would the doctor come from? But Gao Yi simply turned to glance at his group of "super humans."

Sith raised his hand and said, "My emergency aid skills aren’t bad."

Sith approached Yuri. Yuri rolled up his sleeve, and Sith took a glance, then scratched his head, saying, "Seems like this is about the extent of what I can handle."

Yuri let down his sleeve and said, "Forget it; I can deal with it tomorrow at the hospital. Now, have you prepared your questions?"

There were far too many questions to ask. Gao Yi didn’t hesitate and said, "What did you do tonight?"

Yuri thought for a moment and replied, "I dealt with those who once betrayed me. Two of them committed suicide in front of me; one, I went straight to his place and killed him, during which I got injured."

He raised his left arm and continued, "Just now, I killed Solevsky’s entire family."

Xinfeng gasped audibly, and Dani thought for a moment before also gasping audibly. He stared at Yuri, dumbfounded, and said, "Seriously?"

Sith wasn’t particularly stirred, but seeing Xinfeng and Dani’s reactions being so exaggerated, he couldn’t help pulling out his phone. Before he could open it, the name suddenly resurfaced, making him gasp dramatically as well.

"Sss... Solevsky—isn’t he the CEO of the Russian oil conglomerate?"

Yuri nodded.

Dani was dumbstruck and said, "Impossible! I could believe you killed him, but killing his entire family... That’s a whole different notion."

"Actually, you could say I didn’t wipe out the entire family because he still has children abroad. But everyone in Moscow—yes, they’re all dead. Hm, I suppose I wasn’t entirely accurate."

Yuri spoke honestly.

Xinfeng looked incredulous, stating, "How did you manage that? He’s surrounded by bodyguards all the time!"

"Simple. I’ve always served as an adviser to the KGB. This meant I could access various personnel files when necessary. Solevsky was already a primary surveillance target. I knew his property layout, his entry passwords—essentially, I knew everything about him. Besides that, I also understood Solevsky’s training techniques, his effective moves, and his strategies. Despite his departure from the KGB years ago, killing him was still relatively straightforward for me."

It all seemed logical upon hearing it, but upon reflection, it wasn’t quite that simple.

If knowing someone’s details were enough to easily eliminate them, then internal traitors would find it far more convenient than anyone else. Yet, few major figures ever actually end up assassinated by traitors.

Sith wanted to inquire further, but Gao Yi quickly interrupted, saying insistently, "You killed Solevsky, a wealthy magnate and influential figure—aren’t you worried about repercussions?"

"Not at all. Solevsky did try to call for help, but no one came."

Gao Yi swiftly followed up, "This is the key point—why?"

"Because of an agreement."

"What agreement?"

Gao Yi thought Yuri might refuse to answer this, but unexpectedly, Yuri responded earnestly: "When I realized the Soviet Union’s collapse was inevitable and that there was no chance of its return, I surrender. Using my former colleagues’ remaining value, I hunted them down one by one, eliminated them, and thereby removed multiple present and potential threats to the new Russia. In exchange, I got out of prison and gained a great deal of freedom and privilege under the FSB as both a defector and a consultant."

Gao Yi stared blankly at Yuri.

Yuri went on, "I told the President back then that I had no requests, except for one: kill those traitors who had betrayed me. That was my sole demand, and the President agreed."

"Traitors?"

Gao Yi asked curiously, then paused with a furrowed brow, saying, "This... Uh."

The feeling of having nothing to say.

Yuri stated plainly, "Personal grudges. Back then, I nearly succeeded in taking out the primary instigators of the Soviet Union’s collapse in Minsk. That was a critical part of a larger plan. Meanwhile, in Moscow, the KGB and the military were poised to act simultaneously. But the plan was leaked. Someone tipped them off, and Solevsky captured one of our comrades. Torture failed to extract information, so Solevsky used this comrade’s family to coerce him, ultimately slaughtering his entire family to obtain every detail possible, resulting in the failure of our operation."

Spreading his hands, Yuri spoke calmly, "It’s a past event—one that failed. There’s no point in dwelling further. In short, I need revenge, and I must eliminate all the traitors who caused our plan’s failure."

Xinfeng softly said, "But you surrendered, and you helped the new Russia deal with many of your former colleagues?"

"They were necessary sacrifices."

Yuri maintained an impassive expression and replied, "Just a few nostalgic for the Soviet Union. Even if they wanted to act, they didn’t have the capability. Better to trade them for my freedom so I could continue pursuing greater ambitions."

"What constitutes greater ambitions?"

Yuri immediately responded, "The Soviet Union may be gone, but the Red Banner endures."

No more explanation was needed—Yuri had already clarified his underlying logic.

Reflecting on why Huang Haisheng had fixated on Yuri and pointed Gao Yi towards rescuing him, it became apparent that probing further would inevitably tie back to Huang Haisheng. With Xinfeng and the others present, this wasn’t a topic to expand upon.

Gao Yi promptly said, "So, in short, whoever you kill tonight won’t cause problems?"

"Correct."

"But what about later? All on the basis of one promise?"

"Not a promise—interests."

Yuri smiled and said, "Promises are the least reliable thing. Only interests are eternal. As long as I remain beneficial to the KGB, they’ll naturally uphold their end of the deal and tolerate me eliminating a few outdated figures."

Dani couldn’t help saying, "Solevsky isn’t just any outdated figure, is he? He’s... He’s..."

"A money-laundering White Glove, merely a pawn operating for larger interest groups. It’s time for him to be replaced. Eliminating him benefits a lot of people, so there’ll be no trouble."

Yuri was exceptionally clear on this.

Gao Yi said, "So who’s your next target?"

"A former GRU officer—specifically, one of ours who acted as an executor of the mission. His defection caused us to lose the most critical military capabilities."

Yuri’s determination was unwavering. He stated firmly, "I could spare everyone else, but this man must die. Yet he remains in the GRU, still holding a senior position there, never retired or sidelined."

Sith was stunned and said, "Surely you’re not planning to storm the GRU headquarters, are you?"

"Of course not."

Yuri waved his hand and said, "The GRU headquarters is in Churchkovo."

The GRU is an abbreviation. Its full name is the Russian Military Intelligence Bureau.

The GRU also commands twenty-four specialized brigades with a total force of about thirty thousand soldiers.

Moreover, the GRU was almost entirely unaffected by the Soviet Union’s collapse. In Soviet times, they were both the premier special forces and the top military intelligence organization.

And now, the GRU’s status has only increased. While nominally under the KGB’s oversight, in practice, the GRU has long ceased to care about the KGB.

Gao Yi and the others couldn’t help but exchange glances.

Yuri, eager to intensify Gao Yi’s unease, calmly added, "The person I’m looking for is a commander of the GRU’s Moscow Internal Defense Brigade. He holds the rank of Major General—a pivotal figure in their military special operations hierarchy."

Dani swallowed nervously.

Yuri continued, "Under his command is a three-thousand-strong specialized brigade, directly subordinate and tasked with defending Moscow. His office is located in Moscow, within the Ministry of Defense building. Overall, he’s a uniquely positioned commander with dual identities in military operations and intelligence."

Gao Yi thought about it and said, "A person like that—uh, forgive me, but do you think you can kill him without facing consequences? And as for us, could we endure the fallout if we assisted?"

Gao Yi’s underlying message was that while Yuri could target whoever he wanted, they couldn’t bear the consequences of supporting such endeavors.

Yuri smiled faintly and said, "As long as he’s killed tonight, there’ll be no repercussions. If it surpasses tonight, the consequences will be severe. But no matter the outcome, I must eliminate him."

Gao Yi spread his hands and quietly said, "Sorry, it’s not that I don’t want to help you—it’s just that our capabilities fall short."

Yuri responded seriously, "Only by killing him can I truly gain the President’s trust and maximize my influence."

Gao Yi was puzzled and asked, "What do you mean?"

Yuri replied indifferently, "I completely disregard concepts like hatred. Revenge is utterly meaningless. That’s why I’ve refrained from acting for all these years—I was waiting for the right opportunity. The opportunity has arisen, so the moment I left the forest, I commenced retribution. Many hope I’ll sever ties with my past identity entirely, so I must exact revenge and eliminate the one person who must be dealt with."

These words left Gao Yi utterly baffled.

For a person of rational thought, understanding and aligning with a madman was exceedingly challenging. Gao Yi’s failure to comprehend was thus natural—if he had understood Yuri, it would’ve meant something was wrong with his own sanity.

Yuri didn’t check the time but remained calm and said, "It’s been about half an hour. I’ve allocated only half an hour to convince you to help me. So, what’s your decision now?"

Gao Yi didn’t speak, but Dani suddenly asked, "What’s in it for us?"

Yuri laughed, turning to Gao Yi, he said, "Joining the Garden as a KGB representative is secondary. Helping the KGB gather intelligence and acquire additional benefits is their objective. But what you stand to gain is—I can give you everything you need. I can make Liuqiu independent."

Hearing this, Gao Yi slapped the tabletop without hesitation and declared, "We’re in!"
