Chapter 381: Chapter 363: Sending Off the Plague God
Gao Yi wasn’t quite self-aware when it came to his own reputation.
Ruthless, insane, utterly merciless, and relentlessly evil!
Leading an assault on an embassy was something Gao Yi was capable of doing, and critically, he currently had the power to pull off such a deed.
What made Gao Yi infamous was not just his sufficient strength but the fact that he had proven himself.
Travelling from Spain to London, what was so difficult about replicating the deeds done in London over in Baghdad?
"Oh, right, hiss... yeah!"
Gao Yi seemed lost in thought, murmuring, "Even if I totally surround the embassy, that wouldn’t be out of the question, after all... the military isn’t intervening!"
With the Pentagon staying out of it, Gao Yi could indeed bombard the embassy forcefully.
The thought was surprisingly feasible; the only price to pay was to let ISIS take the blame, and Gao Yi felt it was only right to do so, only befitting the treatment Freedom Wind deserved.
"Don’t even think like that! Panetta wants to control the CIA, not to sever ties with it. The Pentagon just wants to watch, but don’t make them have to choose between the two."
Joelson hurriedly tried to persuade Gao Yi, grabbing his arm as if Gao Yi were about to grab a hammer and hunt down Burning Wind across the world the next moment.
"Now, Panetta has already made agreements with people; the embassy will try its best to force Burning Wind out. There won’t be any accidents or reversals this time. You just have to wait outside and shoot down Burning Wind’s helicopter, then claim there was a terrorist attack. That way, everyone’s obligations are met, right?"
Joelson pleaded earnestly, gripping Gao Yi’s arm a little tighter, "Even the ambassador has spoken to me. He only said to refrain from acting inside the embassy. Everyone is showing you respect now. We can’t just ignore their overture of goodwill, so why don’t you step out and then act? As long as you take down Burning Wind, that’s enough, okay?"
Joelson didn’t fully understand Gao Yi, but when he saw his expression shift from vague to resolute, he knew his words had reminded Gao Yi.
To avoid escalating the situation, they needed to quickly send this plague away.
It was better for everyone.
Of course, Gao Yi couldn’t inconvenience his own people, and after pondering for a moment, he said, "But if Burning Wind keeps hiding here and doesn’t go out, it would be difficult for me to come back in, wouldn’t it?"
At this time, about thirty fully armed guards began to slowly close in on Gao Yi.
Donkey panicked in an instant.
Although he could fight, on someone else’s territory with only a pistol and without even a Bullet-Proof Vest, even the most capable mercenary would die in such a situation.
Donkey thought they were exposed, surrounded, done for.
He looked back at Gao Yi and hurried a few steps towards him, saying in despair, "Has the operation completely failed? Should I just kill myself with my gun?"
Thoroughly demoralized.
That’s what happens when you’re not in the inner circle and completely out of touch with the situation.
Gao Yi gestured to Donkey, "Don’t worry, these people are here to protect us."
"Protect? You... you..."
Donkey was at a loss for words.
Joelson addressed the guards closing in, "What’s this about?"
A man dressed in a suit, clearly not a guard, emerged from behind the group and quickly approached Joelson, deliberately keeping a few meters’ distance from Gao Yi and said in a low voice, "It’s time for you to leave, you can’t stay here. Guys, settle your private feud outside and don’t make things difficult for us, don’t make us choose."
"We can certainly leave right away," Joelson replied immediately, "but if you don’t want us causing trouble, you shouldn’t protect a certain individual."
"We hold a completely neutral stance. Now, please depart. We will also ask the other party to leave shortly. These are the ambassador’s exact words for me to convey. This place is the embassy, not the CIA headquarters. We can assure you, we won’t offer protection to either side."
"So that’s the statement: the embassy won’t protect ’Burning Wind’, but they also want Gao Yi to get the hell out as soon as possible."
The ambassador’s feelings could be understood.
Gao Yi nodded, then he said to Lucy, "Let’s go."
Joelson didn’t hesitate, "I’ll stay and watch."
Gao Yi and Lucy turned and left without a word, while ’Donkey’ followed, utterly bewildered. Taking in the guards blocking the corridors and exits, his mind was a fog, unable to comprehend what was happening.
Gao Yi headed for the exit, but the guards, armed and wearing bullet-proof vests, did not make way; they stayed put.
The guards did not seem tense; they were more puzzled than anything.
Gao Yi looked back at Joelson, who, displeased, addressed the suit-clad messenger, "What is this supposed to mean?"
"Nothing special, no other meaning. The ambassador just hopes to escort... this gentleman out."
The man in the suit hurried forward a few steps, ready to face death. He took a deep breath, approached Gao Yi, and gestured politely, "Please allow me to escort you out, this way, please."
Exiting through the main door, onto the driveway, Gao Yi and the man in the suit walked ahead, followed by thirty fully armed guards.
It couldn’t be called an escort; it was more like a detainment.
But it was a polite detainment. The guns remained in their hands, unlowered and never pointed at Gao Yi.
Polite, indeed, yet these men stared unblinkingly at Gao Yi as though he were about to explode on the spot.
The awkwardness was indescribable, almost as if Gao Yi were a source of vile contagion, bound to bring misfortune if approached.
Suddenly, Gao Yi thought of the perfect term.
Sending off the plague god—that was exactly the attitude, wasn’t it!
Not offending, yet not indulging him either, they were firmly and respectfully ushering him away.
Gao Yi had nothing to say. If sending off the plague god was what this was, so be it. Given the current situation, a polite dismissal was the best outcome.
The embassy district was vast, and Gao Yi and his party did not take the normal entrance but rather one meant for internal vehicles.
They walked about a kilometer, Gao Yi breaking into a sweat and the suit-clad man sweating profusely. But eventually, they made it to the exit safely.
The barrier lifted, the roadblock was removed, and the three of them zigzagged between the concrete bollards from the machine-gun emplacements.
"Goodbye, safe travels."
Completely past the roadblock zone, the man in the suit turned and walked back immediately. Meanwhile, the emplacement at the entrance silently rotated its barrels. Although the guns were aimed at Gao Yi, the gunmen removed their hands from their weapons and stepped back, forcing a posture suggesting they could shoot at any time, but without hostility.
Gao Yi shrugged and said to Donkey, "Let’s go."
Donkey’s legs were genuinely wobbly.
He had seen a lot in his life, been through life-and-death situations, but never had Donkey entered the US embassy and then been politely escorted out by dozens of guards.
Quite an experience, truly an experience.
While Donkey was hesitating over what to say, Gao Yi took out his phone and dialed a number, "Where are you guys?"
"We’re near the embassy, getting ready to catch a plane."
"I’m out, come pick me up."
After speaking, Gao Yi hesitated for a moment before adding, "Be mindful of the impact, don’t bring too many people, to avoid causing a misjudgment."
