Chapter 380 - 362: Turned Out to Be Scared
Chapter 380: Chapter 362: Turned Out to Be Scared
What makes it possible to handle extremely complicated matters in a very simple way?
Strength; one must possess extraordinary strength, at least in one aspect, to have overwhelming power.
Gao Yi was only good at fighting, but being unbeatable in close combat, once he boarded a bus that was nearly full, he had to take whatever he could get.
The boarding had already begun.
All the forty or so people needing to depart came to the hall, casually waiting in line for the bus.
Blending into the crowd, Gao Yi was in no rush to board; he scanned the crowd recklessly.
He wasn’t planning to make a move inside the embassy; Gao Yi just needed to confirm that his target boarded the bus, and then he would follow.
Now, Gao Yi was certain that Burning Wind was not among these people; the reason was simple—he was blatantly preparing to strike on the road. Burning Wind must be a fool to board the bus with him.
Thus, the people on this bus could only be decoys meant to divert attention.
A crude and elementary tactic; having clashed several times, Gao Yi now thought Freedom Wind was indeed formidable. However, using such a low-level strategy this time to deceive was quite disappointing to him.
Gao Yi finally locked onto his target, a middle-aged man in his forties with a very solemn expression.
Just now, everyone was ready to board, but counting again, there were only forty-one people, the suspicious character matching the description hadn’t appeared.
But now, the fake finally showed up.
Once they left the embassy district on the bus, he would kill him, fake or not. Since he was meant to draw attention, he might as well play the role of cannon fodder.
The first bus was almost full, and it was time for people to board the second one.
Donkey was the first to board, taking a seat at the very front of the bus. Lucy waited for a few more people before boarding, and of course, Gao Yi would watch where the target sat before finally boarding.
It couldn’t be simpler.
Those with status inside the embassy district knew what was happening and of course stayed as far away as possible.
But these basic staff who knew nothing of the struggle at the higher levels were cheerfully boarding the bus; soon, only four or five people remained outside.
At that moment, the suspicious target, who arrived last, suddenly glared fiercely at Gao Yi.
With an unmasked, extremely angry and helpless look, he glanced at Gao Yi and then the fake turned and walked away.
If Gao Yi chose to act, he could knock out the fake with a single punch right now.
But this was inside the American Embassy; the consequences of acting were quite severe.
Gao Yi was somewhat stunned, but he also thought it was normal, for a decoy made to attract attention to temporarily give up when realizing even being discovered as a fake would still lead to being eliminated out of timidity.
So Gao Yi just sneered as he watched the decoy turn and walk away.
He walked definitively, fleeing decisively.
But as the decoy walked seven or eight steps, about to turn into the corridor, Gao Yi suddenly felt something was amiss.
Feint within a feint; it couldn’t be that Burning Wind planned to impersonate his own decoy and just walk away, could it?
The one securely protected, waiting to be picked up by a helicopter, was the fake; so how could this one, who seemed completely fake, be real?
Why did Gao Yi think so? Because he felt the way the fake had looked at him was a bit too arrogant—a decoy sent to die for others couldn’t have such a genuine emotion in their eyes.
The thought was fleeting, but Gao Yi suddenly shouted, "Burning Wind!"
The man broke into a run, disappearing around the corner of the corridor after two steps.
It really was real!
Gao Yi sighed deeply, but he didn’t chase; instead, he just gestured with his hand.
Donkey, who had boarded the bus, hurried off, and the few remaining people, puzzled, looked on before boarding one after the other.
Donkey and Lucy both approached Gao Yi, and then Donkey whispered, "What’s going on?"
"That guy just now was real."
Clapping his hands, Gao Yi helplessly said, "The target hoped we wouldn’t care about a fake that looked very fake. But, realizing that whether a fake or not, he would still be eliminated by us, he decisively abandoned boarding."
Lucy whispered, "Chase him!"
"We can’t chase!"
Gao Yi shook his head and said, "This is the American Embassy, the target definitely has many companions guarding him. If we really fight here, we might not have the upper hand."
"So, what do we do?"
"Donkey hadn’t finished speaking when someone poked their head out of the bus and shouted, "Hey buddy, get on!"
Gao Yi turned around and waved his hand, saying, "I’m not going, something’s come up, you go ahead."
The people boarding the bus weren’t from the same unit, so they impatiently urged Gao Yi’s group to get back on the bus, close the door, and the bus started moving.
Just like that, a good opportunity passed by?
Gao Yi didn’t need to contact Joelson, as Joelson quickly approached him with brisk steps and whispered, "Why didn’t you get on? What happened?"
"The one about to board was indeed Burning Wind."
Joelson’s eyes widened, and after a moment of shock, he exclaimed, "Falke! What were they thinking, Freedom Wind can’t be that naive!"
Gao Yi turned his head and whispered, "Is there a possibility that it’s not about Freedom Wind being naive or them suddenly becoming stupid, but that the situation is so critical they had no choice but to act this way, they had to take this risky gamble?"
Eliminate all impossibilities, then the remaining, however implausible, must be the truth, it has to be the truth.
Joelson frowned and said, "But there’s no such situation, Freedom Wind’s position hasn’t stooped that low... Wait, let me think."
Joelson looked deeply troubled in thought, but after a few seconds, he finally said, "No, Freedom Wind doesn’t need to rush, Burning Wind can hide here for months without a problem."
While speaking, Joelson glanced sideways at Donkey.
Of course, Donkey was an outsider. Realizing his presence was somewhat intrusive, he quickly said, "I’ll go check over there."
Taking several steps to the side, Donkey turned his head away.
Joelson whispered, "There’s no breakthrough progress with Panetta, as long as Mason isn’t overthrown, Freedom Wind’s position won’t be threatened, and Panetta is anxious to get rid of Burning Wind, which is his only target. I don’t understand, why do they need such a risky way to escape? The embassy is relatively the safest place."
Joelson didn’t know why, and of course, Gao Yi, being an assassin, understood even less about spy affairs.
"Forget about this, what do we do now? Your people should be watching that guy, right? Can we storm the embassy and take him out?"
Burning Wind was CIA, but to the people at the Baghdad station, he was also a stranger, not a familiar colleague.
Here, Joelson needed to use Panetta’s influence to get a group of people to help him, and so did Burning Wind.
So, in Baghdad, their strength should be on the same level.
"He’s definitely being watched, we’ve been watching you and would’ve targeted any suspicious figures immediately. But to make a move here... It’s not really feasible."
Joelson, with a troubled expression, rejected Gao Yi’s suggestion to forcibly act within the Embassy District. He whispered, "If you’re sure that person was Burning Wind, then he is completely exposed now. No matter whether he’s disguised or in makeup, once we pinpoint his likely location, he won’t escape! But I just can’t figure out why. Why is this happening?"
People who rely on their brains for a living like to ask why, unlike Gao Yi, who seldom questioned why.
Just do it, why bother about so much.
"If we can’t act within the embassy, we’ll just have to wait for him to leave. Since the person supposed to be picked up by helicopter was fake, the real Burning Wind can only leave by helicopter now."
Real mixed with fake, since the fake has been revealed, naturally, it has to switch to real.
Burning Wind wasn’t bound to leave by helicopter, but in the short term, the only way to leave the embassy would definitely be by helicopter.
Never mind the details, Gao Yi didn’t care whether Burning Wind would take the helicopter or not, he was just determined with one thought, as soon as the helicopter appeared, shoot it down.
This is brute force overcoming sophistication.
"Okay, since we can’t act within the embassy and the target has hidden in fear, let’s leave. Staying here is ultimately unsafe, we’ll just keep watch from outside."
Gao Yi was ready to leave, as there was no point in staying anymore.
Joelson nodded, then continued with a worried expression, "This is too strange, totally out of character for Freedom Wind... Maybe I should ask, perhaps there’s been some development at Panetta’s end?"
"Do you even need to ask? If there was a development, he would tell you..."
Before Gao Yi could finish, Joelson’s phone rang.
Joelson glanced at the phone, his expression turned solemn, and he whispered, "Panetta."
Panetta really is hard to avoid.
Joelson answered the call, and his face quickly turned to shock. After a few words, he looked astonished at Gao Yi and hung up the phone.
Then, Joelson in utter astonishment said, "I know the reason now. Freedom Wind is afraid of you, Mason is afraid of you, but the embassy is most afraid of you. Burning Wind had to rush out of the embassy because they all believed you would definitely storm in and take down Burning Wind."
Gao Yi was stunned for a moment, then said, "Am I that formidable?"
"So formidable it’s almost inhuman, that’s why they are really scared of you!"
Joelson was excited, then he continued in a low voice, "Panetta really had a breakthrough because everyone assumed you would forcefully take down Burning Wind. Thus, the embassy has asked Burning Wind to leave as soon as possible. If because of Burning Wind, you lead a large group of armed men to attack the embassy, it would be a major scandal, a significant failure."
"What? Me leading a large group attacking the embasy?"
Gao Yi had never thought of doing such a thing, he never planned to act that way, but it seemed his enemies and even the neutrals thought he would, which is why they were so scared.
