Chapter 382: Chapter 364: Air Defense
Feng Biao came to pick up Gao Yi.
"Are you sure this won’t cause any trouble?"
Gao Yi wasn’t sure about his own notorious reputation, and Feng Biao was even less clear.
After so many years, Feng Biao had never even thought about striking against the powerful departments of a country, especially not the United States. Even in his dreams, he would slap himself awake before considering such an action.
Now, after following Gao Yi for only a few days, they had already held the Crown Prince hostage and stormed the Military Intelligence Six Headquarters. Now, attacking a CIA aircraft didn’t seem all that surprising.
However, due to habit, it was normal to feel a bit nervous.
After all, they were about to shoot down a plane right outside the American Embassy; this wasn’t a joke.
"There won’t be any trouble if we shoot it down, but if we don’t, there will be."
Gao Yi hadn’t yet seen the prepared portable anti-air missiles and asked Feng Biao, "Is everything ready?"
"Ready. Four Stinger Anti-Air Missile systems, four two-man teams prepared to launch, and two sets of Russian Needle-S Missiles, totaling six launchers and four spare missiles. We should definitely be able to bring down a helicopter."
Feng Biao said this with confidence, but Gao Yi had never even seen a portable anti-air missile, let alone used one.
"Are these portable missiles reliable?"
"They should be... They’re high-end weapons. I’ve never used them before. How many mercenaries do you think can afford anti-air missiles?"
Feng Biao was being honest.
Gao Yi turned to Donkey and asked, "Are six anti-air missiles enough?"
Donkey couldn’t help but offer a wry smile.
"If it’s against one helicopter, preparing six anti-air missile launchers is more than sufficient, very much so. Even if we don’t know from which direction the helicopter will come, the six mobile portable anti-air missile positions can cover a large area."
Donkey was slightly more professional. He thought for a moment and said, "Place one missile launch team in each direction. The biggest advantage of portable missiles is their mobility. Let two of the teams stay in the vehicles. Even if the helicopter slips through the defense net, they can quickly maneuver by vehicle. A helicopter needs to land and take off, so if we can’t take down the helicopter during landing, we’ll have to do it during takeoff. If we can surround the whole embassy, it shouldn’t be difficult."
Donkey’s responses varied: casual about some things but very precise about others, like now. He didn’t absolutely confirm they could bring it down; he just stated it felt not difficult.
"We’ve already surrounded the embassy, just not in a full circle, but split to both sides."
Surrounding was enough, the details of how didn’t matter much.
Gao Yi and his team’s vehicles stopped by the roadside, where four other vehicles were already parked.
Under the broad daylight, they brazenly prepared to shoot down the CIA’s plane with missiles—an audacity bordering on outrageous.
Lin Xianghua was nearby, and the remaining four members of the War Axe Mercenary Group were there too, but the missile launchers were operated by Sherkin’s subordinates.
Both the Warhammer and War Axe Mercenary Groups had gathered, but not everyone could handle advanced anti-air missiles, while almost all of Sherkin’s subordinates could, hence the task of launching the missiles fell to them.
This was the difference—Sherkin’s men were clearly a level above those from War Axe.
"Thanks for your hard work. We’ll rely on you all in a moment."
Sherkin’s six men were here in two vehicles, with anti-air missiles lying on the rear seats. Now, three of them stood by their vehicles, occasionally glancing involuntarily towards the sky.
Sherkin’s men naturally didn’t have a high opinion of Gao Yi, despite being there to earn his money. But what could they do when Gao Yi had injured Sherkin?
They respected him to an extent, but that didn’t mean they would show him a pleasant face.
All six men offered no reaction to Gao Yi’s efforts to be amiable.
Gao Yi wasn’t upset by this, continuing casually, "No need to keep watching the sky; it’s tiring. If a helicopter comes, someone will inform us."
The Pentagon couldn’t manage the CIA’s plane, but if they failed to notice a helicopter flying over Baghdad, then their air defense system might as well be declared ineffective.
When CIA’s helicopter would take off, it would certainly be under the US Army’s surveillance, moving starkly evident as a louse on a bald head.
Despite Gao Yi’s words, Sherkin’s men continued watching the sky unresponsive.
"Don’t bother with them. Generally speaking, frontline air defense in field troops relies on visual searches."
It was still Donkey, aware that Gao Yi didn’t quite understand. He lowered his voice and said cautiously, "These aren’t ordinary soldiers; they’re obviously special forces. You know about the characteristics of special forces, right?"
"What?"
Donkey shrugged and said, "Although we are paratroopers supported by a warfare system, they operate completely detached from any support system. They must be versatile, knowing a little about everything—able to drive tanks, fly planes, and handle missiles. Maybe they’re not experts, but at least they can operate them."
"It’s like this," Gao Yi nodded, "Are all special forces so formidable?"
"Not exactly, there are many types of special forces, but there are few that can do everything. As far as I know, Signal Flag and Alpha’s members are quite comprehensive, but Sherkin’s men are even more so, so..."
After a moment of hesitation, Donkey drew closer to Gao Yi and whispered, "Either Sherkin recruited them one by one, or they are from the KGB, you know, only the special forces of intelligence units need to be so comprehensive."
Actually, Gao Yi didn’t understand, but since Donkey had put it that way, he could only nod and say, "Hmm, hmm, you’re right, they must be closely related to the KGB."
Just then, the phone rang.
Gao Yi picked up the call, which was from Grasse.
"New situation, the White House has strictly ordered us to refuel the British helicopter immediately, full tank!"
The British helicopter had landed at a US Air Force Base, and the White House had somewhat ignored this British team, leaving them to roast under the Baghdad sun for the better part of the day.
Now, suddenly ordering to refuel the British at the fastest speed, this message sounded somewhat odd.
Gao Yi frowned and said, "Do you think..."
Reading the situation clearly, Grasse did not hesitate, "They’re not planning to have the British go to the embassy to pick up Burning Wind and get him out, are they?"
Freedom Wind had even brought in the British Royal Marine Corps to lead the attack. Now, realizing that deceiving wouldn’t work, seeking help beyond America seemed pretty normal.
Gao Yi felt a thump in his heart and said, "This is trouble if the British continue to intervene, we only have six sets of portable anti-air missiles, but the British have six helicopters themselves! Plus the CIA’s own aircraft, that’s at least seven helicopters!"
Grasse spoke urgently in a low voice, "This isn’t a simple math problem. Even if you dare shoot down all the aircraft, portable missiles aren’t 100% accurate. The most crucial thing is, do you know which helicopter Burning Wind is on?"
"Take them all down! We don’t have enough missiles now, how long can you hold up? How many more anti-air missiles can you find?"
"I can delay for at most two hours, but anti-air missiles are a big problem. I’ve already given you all the anti-air missiles I could muster. The US Army stationed in Baghdad inherently has few portable anti-air missiles, since there’s generally no use for them, and the Iraqi military doesn’t have many either. The key issue is that getting them out of storage is going to be troublesome and might not be fast enough."
Expecting the worst scenario wasn’t hard; getting anti-air missiles wasn’t difficult, the real challenge was the race against time.
You have your strategies, and I have my ways to overcome.
While Gao Yi was determined to bring down Burning Wind, Freedom Wind, of course, was doing everything to ensure Burning Wind’s safe escape.
This was a gamble involving several powers, a game of back and forth, waiting to see who would have the last laugh.
"Focus on getting anti-air missiles, fast, fast!"
Gao Yi hung up Grasse’s call and dialed Joelson.
Joelson, not waiting for Gao Yi to speak, said urgently, "I’ve got the news. The British are determined to hold out to the end, Panetta is determined to win this tough battle, but the question is if we can take down Burning Wind with the full support of Britain."
"Yes! Delay all you can on your end, even when the planes arrive, don’t let Burning Wind board easily, just like that."
There was no time for more words.
Setting up a bigger anti-air network, leaving all the pressure on Grasse wasn’t right, Gao Yi had to try using his own channels.
He couldn’t even consider looking for Abdulla now, so he directly sought out Shaman, his biggest support.
"Brother, I need anti-air missiles, can you manage that?"
"Anti-air missiles? Everything else is easy, but anti-air missiles... I really don’t have those! But I’ll have someone look for them immediately."
"Hurry, within two hours."
Without any pleasantries, Gao Yi hung up Shaman’s call and then dialed Marina.
"Now I need your help. The British are fully backing Freedom Wind, I need anti-air missiles to shoot down British planes, I need portable anti-air missiles, no, I need any weapon that can take down helicopters! It must be within two hours, any later will be too late!"
Gao Yi was blunt, and Marina was clear.
"Anti-air missiles are not commonly used weapons, but luckily we have them!"
Marina was very reliable as she did not hesitate, "Do you need people too?"
Hesitating a bit about hitting others, but for hitting the British, considering it a second longer felt like betraying France.
"Needed!"
"Where?"
"American Embassy."
The location mentioned by Gao Yi made Marina hesitate for a second, but after a second, she immediately responded, "Understood, you better keep me out of this, but Northwest Wind anti-air missiles will be delivered quickly!"
