Chapter 265: Chapter 252 Tribute
For a minor fan girl’s request that was by no means excessive, could Gao Yi refuse? Did he even need to refuse?
He certainly hadn’t decided to broaden Emily’s horizons just because she was a second-generation agent; he simply felt too embarrassed to say no.
The car stopped at an ordinary-looking private residence, just a common apartment, which also serves as a safe house. There’s not much to say about safe houses; they’re more or less the same, with those from wealthier countries and organizations perhaps being slightly better equipped, but that was about it.
However, today the safe house could only serve as a temporary resting place.
The British were hot on their heels, and it wouldn’t be long before they were discovered; it was even possible they had never shaken them off in the first place, so this safe house would soon have to be permanently abandoned.
The price paid by the French was quite significant. Years of effort on the intelligence front were being spent today, and then those connected to this safe house would be compromised. Moles who’d been difficult to cultivate might now become useless, and any assets acquired would have to be abandoned.
So, on a whim, Gao Yi decided that France might have to write off several million U.S. dollars’ worth of costs because of him—or even tens of millions.
The captive had fainted, and while Emily was discussing with the driver how to deal with the captive, Gao Yi was busy changing into his disguise, donning a silicone mask, and replacing everything that could be replaced.
Nowadays, silicone masks had become increasingly sophisticated. They were no longer the exclusive tools of agents; even ordinary people could buy silicone masks with quite convincing effects. Unless inspected closely, flaws were difficult to detect, and professional-grade masks custom-made for agents could even withstand close-range scrutiny without giving anything away.
Gao Yi finished changing as quickly as possible, which took him about twenty minutes. Then, as he was about to rush out the door to leave, Emily whispered, "What do we do with the captive?"
Taking a live captive had suddenly made the situation many times tenser, so Emily had been very curious about what Gao Yi intended to do with this captive.
"Well, about the captive, you guys decide. Let him go, kill him, or lock him up until he dies; it doesn’t matter to me. He’s of no use anyway."
Gao Yi answered nonchalantly, and the driver’s face changed upon hearing this. He then spoke out in grief and anger, "Many of us went out of our way to enable you to take the captive with you, divert the pursuers, erase the traces, and buy us time, but now you say he’s useless."
"It’s not that he’s useless, it’s that he’s no longer of any use now. The moment we successfully took him away, his usefulness came to an end."
Gao Yi didn’t want to waste words. He said to Emily, "The two of us are leaving. Didn’t you want me to give you a firsthand experience? Let’s go. I’ll take you."
The bald driver felt on the verge of madness, but Emily was quite excited, saying, "Sure, let’s go!"
"Hold on, you guys... be careful!"
Gao Yi stopped and calmly waited for the driver to say something more, but that was it.
Emily’s mother was the top boss at the Directorate-General for External Security.
The reason Gao Yi was willing to take Emily now was that having her along was like carrying a protective charm.
The two left the house, this time driving by themselves, but Emily took over as the driver because Gao Yi, still a novice, couldn’t easily handle British right-hand-drive vehicles.
As they drove off, Gao Yi had no idea how many people were following to protect them, but he sensed there wouldn’t be few. Since Marina had dared to let Emily take this risk with him, he was even more willing.
"Where are we going?"
Emily seemed a bit excited. She probably hadn’t been on a real mission before, and if she had, it definitely wouldn’t have been dangerous.
But little did she know that this might be her first field mission, and it was starting off dangerously.
"We’re heading to MI6."
Emily was taken aback before she asked in surprise, "Again?"
"Yes, again. We’ll keep going until we achieve our goal."
Emily didn’t dwell too long on this and stopped talking further, just driving towards MI6 again.
Of course, they had switched cars. There weren’t too many police visible along the way. Even with two disturbances at MI6’s doorstep, it wasn’t enough to stir the whole of London.
But as the car once again approached the bridge, it was evident that MI6 had stepped up security. There were two more police cars at the bridge entrance, and many people in plain clothes with unusual demeanor and posture had visibly increased.
"MI6 hasn’t blocked off traffic. I guess they won’t cut communication or close off roads; that would be too embarrassing. But what do we do? Just drive through? Stop the car?"
Emily spoke, but she now seemed somewhat nervous. No wonder, given that MI6 was now on high alert. If they dared to act, the chances of getting shot were extremely high.
Honestly, MI6’s capabilities were strong. The first time was smooth because Sowa had caught them off guard, and the second time was purely due to Gao Yi’s incomprehensible fighting ability.
This third time, however, was not so simple. MI6 was prepared, and it was impossible for Gao Yi to repeat the same scenario.
"Don’t stop. Keep driving normally."
Gao Yi calmly observed the situation on both sides of the road.
Personnel positions were spread out, all within spots where they could quickly provide mutual support. Also, the number of people wearing trench coats — surely to conceal long guns — had increased considerably, at least half of them carrying submachine guns. Furthermore, they were spaced out several meters apart, meaning at most, Gao Yi could take down two, but he would definitely be met with gunfire from all directions.
Gao Yi wasn’t foolish enough to act rashly under these conditions.
He let Emily drive through MI6’s territory, and as they passed, Gao Yi exhaled softly, saying, "Let’s rest a bit. Wait a while longer."
"Where are we going, and how long do we wait?"
"We’re going to eat, study, and wait as long as it takes based on the situation, to see when the Military Intelligence Sixth Department pulls their people back from outside."
"That could take quite a while."
"No problem, we’re not in a hurry. You should still have people keeping watch in the Military Intelligence Sixth Department, right? We’ll talk when the British withdraw their sentries."
If you were to ask whether Gao Yi had a plan, the answer would still be no.
He was just playing it by ear, not needing to look too far ahead, just dealing with the immediate step and countering moves as they came.
If others thought Gao Yi was confident and had everything figured out beforehand, which was why he always seemed unflustered, then they were misunderstanding him.
But it must be admitted that given Gao Yi’s calm and confident demeanor, it was easy for people to get the wrong idea.
Emily certainly thought that Gao Yi must have had it all figured out long ago, and all that was needed now was to wait for the right moment.
Not only Emily had to wait, but anyone who was still undercover and useful was waiting as well.
"Everyone, continue waiting."
Emily talked to the air again, but Gao Yi was already used to it; let Emily take care of it, since he couldn’t command anyway.
"We’ll go to Chinatown, get something to eat, have some tea, um, you should probably change your disguise."
Gao Yi thought for a moment and said, "You could dress up as a child. I think you’d pass as a student easily, like thirteen or fourteen years old..."
Emily had never seemed angry before, but now, her face clearly looked displeased.
Her aura was so strong that Gao Yi dared not continue.
Emily suddenly turned to look at Gao Yi and asked, "Do I really look that young?"
After speaking, Emily couldn’t help but look down at herself.
Gao Yi suddenly had an epiphany, but apart from his fighting ability, flattery, and acting skills were what he was best at.
"Oh, haven’t you seen ’Léon: The Professional’?"
Gao Yi didn’t explain; he just counter-questioned.
Emily paused for a moment and said, "The Professional, the old film with Jean Reno?"
"Yes, you’ve seen it, right?"
Emily shrugged and said, "I’ve seen it once, um, you think I look like that little girl? What’s her name?"
"Young people should watch classic films more often—what’s her name again..."
Emily gave Gao Yi a sidelong glance and said, "Just tell me what you want to do."
"I want to... cosplay!"
Gao Yi indeed thought that Emily should dress as a child, and he could pose as her father, which would indeed attract less attention.
Silicone masks could replicate any skin color, and a father and daughter walking down the street was perfectly normal. However, seeing Emily’s strong reaction, Gao Yi quickly changed his statement.
"I mean, as an assassin, isn’t it normal to pay tribute to ’The Professional’? It’s a French director, French lead actor—I really like Luc Besson and Jean Reno. Don’t you?"
Gao Yi always found the right excuses.
Emily said in surprise, "At this time, you want to cosplay? And dress up as characters from a classic movie?"
"Uh... If you think..."
"You are absolutely crazy! But can we even get the costumes?"
Gao Yi was taken aback.
Emily seemed excited as she said eagerly, "I’ll have someone look for suitable clothing, then you hold a potted plant, take my hand, and we walk past the Military Intelligence Sixth Department’s entrance, is that the plan?"
How thrilling.
Just too thrilling.
Gao Yi quickly said, "No, it’s just to pay tribute to the scene and the feel, not to recreate the exact look from the movie. And, I remember the two of them just walked side by side, not hand in hand."
Emily didn’t respond to Gao Yi’s question; instead, in her excitement, she said, "You’re a crazy genius! I’ll get someone to prepare."
Once more speaking to the air, Emily said urgently, "Please prepare clothes similar to ’The Professional,’ a potted plant, and weapons, especially the choker. It has to match exactly. And... let me think, start preparing."
Actually, Gao Yi didn’t mean it that way; he was not arrogant enough to slap the face of the Military Intelligence Sixth Department while cosplaying a scene from a movie. But since the conversation had reached this point, he suddenly thought that maybe the idea wasn’t so bad after all.
It was as if it had been his plan all along rather than being forced to find an excuse.
