Chapter 264 - 251: Good or Not?
Chapter 264: Chapter 251: Good or Not?
He returned after capturing the enemy single-handedly, with effortless ease.
Gao Yi dragged the captive back, using him as a shield. He swayed the person to and fro, now on the left, now on the right, to avoid anyone shooting at him.
Yet Gao Yi’s earpiece remained silent.
But in the frequency that Gao Yi couldn’t hear, there was utter chaos.
Too many people were eager to share their findings with others, also too keen to express their feelings.
While they were certainly professional, even the most professional among them had never seen such a scene before.
"Jack of Heart has taken a hostage from the Military Intelligence Sixth Department..."
"What do we do?"
"We didn’t plan to take any captives, how do we handle this?"
"Boss, should we provide support?"
"Damn it, has he gone mad? Why do we let a madman get involved? Has everyone at the top gone mad too?"
In their desperation, some spoke without restraint, calling Gao Yi a madman was one thing, but they were also daring to say Marina was mad.
Indeed, facing such an unexpected situation was particularly uncomfortable for people used to following the rules.
Gao Yi couldn’t hear them, but Emily heard everything very clearly, so she simply whispered, "Provide support, evacuate!"
Jack of Heart was the codename Emily gave to Gao Yi, and when she heard this name causing a stir in her earpiece, her first reaction was excitement.
Her body trembled uncontrollably, and the trembling became more intense.
As Gao Yi dragged the person back, he saw Emily, who was visibly shaking, and couldn’t help but ask, "Are you scared?"
"No!"
"Then you’re excited?"
"Yes!"
The captive, though being suffocated, found enough space to breathe and couldn’t resist clawing at Gao Yi’s arm.
Gao Yi tightened his grip, and the captive immediately dropped his hands, powerless.
Seeing a strong man handle like a child in Gao Yi’s grasp, Emily’s first reaction was amazement that such people existed in the world!
Some emotions transcend race and ethnicity, age and status, such as admiration.
Emily took a deep breath, then couldn’t help but touch Gao Yi’s arm.
She was too close and had to look up at Gao Yi; her voice trembling, she said, "You’ve fulfilled all my fantasies of a hero!"
This was exactly the kind of trouble Gao Yi wanted to avoid.
Gao Yi looked at Emily with a strange expression, and after Emily took another deep breath, she sharply ordered, "Hurry up!"
"Jack of Heart has taken a captive, should we silence him? Can we kill the captive? If we can’t, supporting him risks full exposure!"
The support team expressed their concerns rapidly over the intercom.
Yes, this was a problematic situation.
They had intended to give a slap in the face, not take a captive. True, now having a captive was an even bigger slap to the Military Intelligence Sixth Department’s face, but the question was, could the French External Security Bureau really kill this captive?
If not, should they interrogate him?
And if so, where and who would interrogate? Would the interrogator ever come back to the UK? Could any involved in this operation ever show their faces in the UK again?
This was London, not Paris.
Let me emphasize, this is London, not Paris!
Interrogating an agent of the Military Intelligence Sixth Department in London, someone who’s been captured in plain sight, and now trying to evade pursuit from the same department, yet still, you’re thinking of finding a place in London for interrogation?
If you think it’s too difficult to interrogate in London, should you take the captive to Paris?
Now, the question is, how do you get him there.
Gao Yi was the kind who enjoyed a good show and never shied away from trouble; he was only afraid if it was too small, so his choice would definitely make the Directorate-General for External Security uncomfortable.
Now that the objective was achieved, even those ready to support started to have their own concerns.
"This is not for you to consider, provide support, evacuate!"
Emily emphasized again, her tone devoid of any weakness or naivety.
Marina was tough, and Emily was feisty. It was a moment of genuine emotion, a display of authority once the façade was dropped in an emergency situation.
In that instant, Gao Yi had the illusion that the little fangirl in front of him was not as simple as she appeared.
After firmly speaking a sentence in French to the air, Emily looked at Gao Yi and said, "Support is arriving soon!"
While speaking, a car raced over, and though it braked in time, it still skidded several meters past Gao Yi and them before coming to a stop.
Emily muttered under her breath, "Idiots!"
She dashed over and yanked open the car door, Gao Yi backed in dragging the captive, got into the car first, and then pulled the person onto the rear seat.
The captive, with his upper body in the car but legs still outside, kicked around frantically. Gao Yi shouted, "If you don’t want to be dragged outside, sit properly!"
The captive immediately stopped flailing, then lifted his legs, and Emily smoothly closed the door.
Emily sat in the passenger seat and immediately erupted into a fierce argument with a bald man who was driving.
Calling it an argument wasn’t quite right, it was more like Emily’s unilateral outburst of anger.
This petite woman was gradually shedding her disguise.
The bald driver was originally very impatient, he complained a few times, but after Emily gave him several earfuls in a row, he obediently shut up and pushed the car to its limits.
Gao Yi turned to look behind him, right now he feared being shot from behind.
Then, Gao Yi noticed two cars had stopped behind them; they were not pursuers, but the backup team covering the rear.
As the speed picked up, Emily turned her head and said to Gao Yi, "You tell me what to do!"
Without thinking, Gao Yi said, "Find a safe place."
"There’s no place safe right now, we are under the surveillance system of the entire London; within an hour at most, wherever we hide will be found, even if someone helps us conceal our tracks it won’t work."
After speaking quickly, Emily felt she needed to explain, so she quickly added, "This isn’t a tacit confrontation now; our actions have been too outrageous, the British won’t hold back, um, this is war, a war between spies."
Gao Yi had anticipated this outcome before making a move.
"No problem, give me half an hour to change my disguise; you guys have enough makeup, right? Don’t tell me you don’t."
"We do!"
Emily looked at the driver, this time not in French but in English, "Go to our backup safe house!"
The driver looked extremely helpless as he glanced in the rear-view mirror at the captive who Gao Yi was choking but hadn’t passed out, and with great reluctance said, "Your actions have destroyed many years of our efforts."
Emily coldly said, "Are you an idiot? The decade of hiding was exactly for today, to be of use! We haven’t prepared for years in London just to buy property but to make a difference at a critical moment, now is that time, you better shut up and do what you need to do!"
The driver angrily said, "Your actions have ruined our efforts! You’re not my boss, you better speak to me politely!"
What, infighting during the operation?
Even though Gao Yi was watching with a bystander’s amusement, he was quite unable to accept the current situation, because it didn’t matter if the French were in conflict, but it would be inappropriate if they ended up implicating him.
Emily said indifferently, "If you have a complaint, take it to the director; right now, we are the ones acting. Are you not going to cooperate?"
Emily’s voice was quite cold, causing the driver to shiver.
Gao Yi saw it clearly, the driver’s arms were covered in goosebumps.
Unable to help himself, Gao Yi turned to look at Emily.
Something wasn’t right. This young girl looked so young; she shouldn’t hold such powerful influence, yet how could her words instill such fear?
Perhaps sensing Gao Yi’s puzzled gaze, Emily turned back and sweetly smiled at him, "Don’t mind it, it’s normal for colleagues from different departments to have some disagreements, right?"
"Yes, absolutely."
Gao Yi was just watching the drama unfold; the first half of the play hadn’t gone well, he felt cheated as an audience member, and then he was pulled onto the stage to perform, so he cheered and made a fuss, deciding to stir up trouble first.
This was just how things were; Gao Yi was venting, making Marina regret dragging him into this.
So far, it seemed to work quite well.
But the issue was that Emily was neither angry nor anxious, and moreover, why would a young girl, even with Marina’s influence, be able to instill fear?
Chills running down one’s spine is definitely an instinctual fear, something beyond one’s control. If the argument could be an act, then the driver’s genuine fear was undoubtedly real, and that meant this was no act.
Why?
Who exactly was Emily?
To get this cleared up, he couldn’t let the captive keep listening; he still had some personal connections to Emily, he couldn’t harm her.
So after agreeing with Emily, Gao Yi let go of his arm but raised his hand and struck the captive’s head.
"Now that the captive has fainted, is there anything you’d like to explain to me?"
Gao Yi chose to ask now because he had to quickly decide whether to jump out of this pit, and he couldn’t delay.
Not asking anything specific, Emily knew what he wanted to ask.
"Um, I have a background," Emily acknowledged Gao Yi’s thoughts.
A bit embarrassed, she smiled and continued, "Why, as someone who joined just two years ago, I could get the position of an assistant to the general supervisor of the Directorate-General for External Security Disciplinary Committee, that’s because my mother used to be the deputy director."
Suddenly it all made sense, no wonder.
Gao Yi couldn’t help but ask, "Former deputy director? Where is she now?"
Embarrassed, Emily said, "Now she’s the Minister for the French Security Department."
Well, that explained everything.
Emily still looked sheepish as she continued, "Also, Marina really likes me, because she used to be my mother’s assistant, always has been. I’ve known her since I was very young; she used to be the one responsible for taking me to school, and when my mother was busy, I would stay at her house, so we’re good friends."
"Uh, I see."
Gao Yi didn’t know what else to say, so he just chuckled awkwardly, "That’s good, having a background, uh, that’s good."
Finding nothing substantial to say, he just muttered some nonsense to get by.
But Emily still looked awkward as she said, "You won’t look down on me for this, will you?"
For a moment, Gao Yi was taken aback and couldn’t help but say, "Don’t joke, how could that happen."
Seeing Emily relax a little, she quickly said, "Then don’t let me just watch from the sidelines, take me with you in the action, please, could you?"
