Chapter 232: Chapter 220: Come as a Guest
Surrounded by the crossfire, the roads on both sides were completely blocked, but north of the conflict point, cars could still pass slowly.
As a result, the direction towards Paris quickly cleared of cars, but the vehicles heading south from Paris got trapped. Those in front knew what had happened and even managed to turn around to flee, but the ones behind remained clueless, leading to a massive traffic jam.
Gao Yi and his crew could simply pick any car to "borrow."
"Hey, hey, hey!"
Just as they decided on a car to target, Feng Biao suddenly began calling out, then he pointed to a police car mixed in the flow of traffic, saying uncertainly, "Why is there a police car? Let’s hijack the police car! We’ve probably been spotted anyway. If we drive a police car, we can clear the way. Following it with a normal car will make our escape quicker."
Feng Biao was bold like that, but upon reflection, giving it a serious thought, Gao Yi suddenly felt it wasn’t an impossible plan.
Given the current situation, any attempts at hiding and evading were pure nonsense. Instead of sneaking around, it was more important to make a swift getaway.
"Alright, Berserker, come with me; Ah Gui, borrow that Mercedes. Since there’s insurance coverage, we might as well take a nicer car."
With his pistol slung behind him, Gao Yi, with Lucy in tow, approached the police car.
The police car, already mixed in with the traffic, showed no signs of fleeing. As Gao Yi and Lucy approached, they saw two policemen casually chatting inside.
Roughly two to three hundred meters away, if these two policemen hadn’t seen what was happening up front or heard the gunfire, it might indeed be possible.
Gao Yi and Lucy, one on each side, approached the police car, then Gao Yi knocked on the window of the driver’s side.
The policeman glanced at Gao Yi in surprise, then rolled down the window, looking at Gao Yi expressionlessly.
A string of French followed, none of which he understood.
Lucy interjected from the side, "There’s a traffic jam ahead."
"We’re not traffic cops."
The driver responded briefly and was about to roll the window back up when Lucy quickly said, "Don’t you know what happened up front?"
"We’re off duty."
Gao Yi chimed in from the side, "Purely out of curiosity, why are they still in a police car after clocking out? Ask them."
Lucy asked, then turned to Gao Yi, "They said they’re from a nearby police station and it’s their off-duty time now. They’re going back to the station to return the car and then head home."
Gao Yi nodded his understanding.
Meanwhile, the policeman suddenly asked Gao Yi, "What’s that you have in your hand?"
Gao Yi had been keeping his hand behind his back and his posture was noticeably awkward, making it hard for the policeman in the car to spot the gun. However, drivers in the cars in front and behind could see it, so now the driver in front was getting nervous.
The driver in front was quite brave; he got out of his car without closing the door and, eyes fixed forward, started walking faster and faster until he began to run.
That’s why the policeman finally noticed something odd about Gao Yi and questioned him.
Gao Yi took the gun out and said, "A gun."
Gao Yi’s gun had such a unique, sci-fi look to it that it seemed more like a prop than a weapon, thereby reducing the level of fear it invoked.
The policeman stared in shock at the gun in Gao Yi’s hand, froze for a moment, then suddenly said, "Assaulting an officer is a serious crime, and killing an officer even more so. Friend, you’re young, don’t be rash. We may be off duty, but if there’s anything you need, just say so."
The speaking officer looked to be in his thirties, now with a warm expression and an apologetic smile. Most importantly, he was speaking fluent English.
The policeman in the passenger seat appeared to be about fifty, his beard graying slightly. As Gao Yi brought out the gun, his eyes widened in shock.
Gao Yi looked at Lucy, thought for a moment, then suddenly said, "Let’s have them lead the way."
Lucy made a puzzled face.
"We’re not familiar with the local terrain. It would be quicker to have both of them drive us down back roads than to rely on navigation alone."
"Good idea."
Naturally, Lucy had no objections to Gao Yi’s plan.
So Gao Yi shook his gun a little and smiled, "Open the door, would you take us to Paris?"
"This..."
Gao Yi pulled back on the slide. He didn’t fire, but as he racked the slide, a bullet ejected from the chamber. Gao Yi caught it deftly, then opened his palm, "See, it’s a real bullet."
The policeman immediately said, "Please get in!"
Lucy picked up the radio and whispered, "We’re getting in the police car; follow us."
Lucy opened the rear door, Gao Yi got in, and then Lucy sat down beside him.
Gao Yi exhaled and said, "Now, turn around and head to Paris."
The police car began to turn around and without any need for Gao Yi’s instructions, the siren blared and the lights flashed.
"What’s your name?"
"Aliza, Aliza Fons."
The driver, now suddenly proficient in English, started to speak as the policeman on the passenger side, grasping the handle above the car door with his right hand and placing his left on the central console, stretched out fully with no need to worry about him reaching for a gun or pressing a radio.
Too sensible.
The French, true to form, had an extremely standard notion of surrender. Even though they didn’t raise their hands, their alternative gestures were on point, at least not arousing any suspicion.
"What’s your name?"
"I am George Wals."
The veteran officer immediately reported his name, speaking in English.
Odd, since when did French police start speaking English after guns were drawn? Weren’t they supposed to hate speaking English the most?
It must be the magic of the gun.
Gao Yi exhaled lightly and said, "You two have been very cooperative, and I’m pleased. Thank you for offering to take us to Paris. The traffic has been terrible all along the way. Could you possibly get us there any faster?"
"Yes, of course!"
Aliza replied swiftly, just having finished a turn and then accelerating forward.
Li Jie and the others sped up to follow.
Aliza glanced back hesitantly, "The car behind us..."
"Oh, my companions."
"I see. So, sir, would you prefer a quiet drive, or shall I turn on the siren?"
"Hmm, whatever’s faster, let’s go with that."
So, continuing with the siren blaring, Aliza drove the police car forward at speed, and one had to admit that the French people were quite sensible. Although the road was congested, nobody squeezed forward from the curb. When they heard the sirens behind, they would make way.
A path was cleared between two lanes, allowing the police car to advance at a steady pace without stopping much.
The jam was breaking up.
The police car forged ahead with its piercing siren, proceeding about five kilometers, when suddenly, from the rear, Lin Xianghua spoke up through the radio, "Boss, helicopters ahead, flying in at ultra-low altitude."
Gao Yi, who was in the backseat, bent down to take a look and saw helicopters flying along the highway.
Two helicopters in blue and white livery, probably not military.
Gao Yi immediately asked, "Your police helicopters?"
"No, those are definitely private helicopters belonging to some wealthy... boss," Aliza promptly responded to Gao Yi’s question, while George at the co-pilot seat interjected, "They’re sightseeing helicopters from tour companies. Probably someone rented them to get home because of the traffic jam."
As the helicopters neared, they skimmed just fifty meters above the highway.
Gao Yi quickly looked back, only then realizing that there weren’t just two helicopters but four; two were flying low, while the other two were much higher.
Why would four helicopters appear so suddenly? Instinctively, Gao Yi felt something was wrong.
But the four helicopters didn’t linger, instead heading straight back.
The police car kept driving forward.
Gao Yi exhaled softly and then took the walkie-talkie from Lucy, whispering, "Something’s off about those helicopters, four of them showing up at once. But they aren’t tourist sightseeing ones; they shouldn’t be dispatched by the French side, right? Be careful and keep an eye on our tail."
If they came under attack from helicopters, the best move would be to seek shelter in a sturdy building.
The same went for those on the ground, driving in a car; there’s no outrunning a helicopter, and having cover like trees or shrubbery wouldn’t help much. Modern military helicopters are equipped with powerful targeting systems, and hiding would be nearly impossible.
It’s daytime, which is slightly better since the high background temperature can interfere with imaging. At night, thermal imaging becomes far more effective in locating people.
However, the aircraft that had just passed were civilian, and civilian helicopters typically lack advanced targeting systems. So, if they did show up with ill intent, abandoning the car and fleeing on foot might be an option.
But the only cover here was a few trees on either side of the road, surrounded by farmland, and running into the fields would be even less safe.
After surveying the environment, Gao Yi suddenly said to the police officer driving the car, "Those planes that just passed might be looking for us."
Gao Yi didn’t think he said much, but the two officers’ bodies tensed up immediately.
Gao Yi continued, "They’ll probably realize we’ve taken a police car soon. Hmm, do you have any idea or know of any place we can hide from a helicopter search?"
"I... I... I’m only seven months from retirement."
George, in the co-pilot seat, turned stiffly, trying not to remove his hands from the dashboard, which, with just turning his neck, did indeed seem difficult.
Gao Yi waited for George to say more.
George earnestly said, "Look, I have seven months until retirement. I really can’t die now. Therefore, I recommend a safe place where you can wait a while. How about that?"
"Where to?"
"The police station... Don’t get me wrong, but right now, going to the police station is really the safest choice!"
George, worried that Gao Yi would misunderstand, spoke in a gentle and soft tone, "We are municipal police. There’s a small police station ahead that’s the nearest; I worked there for twenty years, I know it well. So, how about you come with me to the station for a while? It’s definitely safe."
After that, George checked the time and added, "We are off duty now. There’s only one person on duty at the station. You don’t have to worry about anything; just think of it as paying a visit. How does that sound?"
