Chapter 231: Chapter 219: What is at the End of the Traffic Jam?
Safely and smoothly, as dusk approached, Gao Yi and his team arrived in the suburbs of Greater Paris.
The traffic had noticeably increased, and speeds had dropped significantly. There were no interceptions or accidents along the way, making the smoothness of the journey almost suspicious.
"Uh, we need to get off the highway."
"Why?"
"There’s a traffic jam up ahead, completely backed up."
"A traffic jam..."
Luca was driving now, while Gao Yi navigated. As a competent co-driver, it was his duty to give the driver the right directions in advance.
Luca suddenly tensed up and asked, "Why is there a jam? Police checkpoint?"
"No, it’s the farmers unhappy with some new policy in France. They’ve blocked the road with tractors. There’s a junction ahead of us, let’s quickly get off the highway and take the back roads."
"Uh... that is really..."
Luca didn’t know what to say, but as long as it wasn’t a police checkpoint causing the jam, he replied with ease, "We can take the back roads to bypass it. Then let’s not enter the Paris city center. We’ll take turns driving until we leave France."
There were many cars exiting the highway at the junction ahead, increasing the congestion. Luca had no choice but to slowly follow the flow of traffic off the highway and onto a two-lane back road.
The back road too ran the risk of being completely blocked, but for now, at least the traffic was still moving.
They were just uncertain about where to go.
Gao Yi wasn’t afraid of entering Paris. He felt that although Paris was large, it was actually a safer place to hide.
But he hated being stuck in traffic. If they got caught in a jam and couldn’t move forward or backward, it would be problematic.
"Otherwise, let’s just turn back. If there’s a traffic jam, we can only abandon the car and walk, but then we can’t take our guns with us."
Gao Yi’s idea was to go around Paris. Anyway, they couldn’t afford to be without guns. If they abandoned the car, a group of people wandering around with guns would make even the most tolerant French suspect them of terrorism.
So staying in the car was safer.
Luca pondered for a moment and agreed with Gao Yi’s thinking, so he helplessly said, "Alright, we can’t abandon the car. Let’s turn around and head back. Everyone has to work a bit harder today, leaving France overnight. As long as we keep moving, the enemy won’t be able to trace us."
"Okay."
Gao Yi readily agreed with Luca’s plan.
So they continued on, but as they found a gap in traffic to turn around and were about to head back in the direction they came from, suddenly, a car on the opposite lane stopped.
It had been a single lane, but after turning around, it turned into the oncoming lane.
Four cars behind them, not too far away, a Renault suddenly crossed over, blocking the lane as if it was attempting to turn around as well.
However, after crossing, the vehicle didn’t move.
Then, without the windows rolling down, several small holes suddenly appeared in the Renault’s glass.
They were being shot at.
Gao Yi reacted extremely fast, ducking down swiftly, while Lucy in the back seat, though separated by the window, raised her gun and fired at the Renault.
Both sides firing from inside their cars through two layers of glass.
Gao Yi fired a shot and immediately understood what an ear-splitting gunshot was.
Li Jie had mentioned that it’s best not to shoot indoors, especially since Gao Yi’s "Divine Artifact" pistol was loud enough to deafen.
The experience now proved him right.
"Motherfucker!"
Gao Yi decisively gave up the idea of continuing to shoot.
Shooting through two layers of glass could severely alter the trajectory of the bullets, especially with pistol rounds, which would deviate even more. As for the expanding bullets typically used in pistols, they were almost unusable, lacking any semblance of accuracy.
So, although the exchange of fire was intense, no one was hit.
Someone from the Renault got out of the car.
A man in his twenties, looking extremely angry, took cover behind the vehicle, reaching his arm out beyond the windshield to shoot at Gao Yi and his team.
"Strikes! Protests! Fuck off, damn French! Can’t you just work quietly?"
The anguished cursing continued as he fired and swore, conveying a sense of seeking death.
Gao Yi was baffled, wondering if the man had some issues.
If they were being followed, then why not keep it stealthy? They hadn’t noticed anyone tailing them, so why had this tail decided to just jump out?
Lucy had already gotten out of the car and shot the gunman in the arm.
But this time it wasn’t Lin Xianghua who shot; from the car behind, Feng Biao took a shot with a rifle, shooting through two layers of glass to hit the target in the torso.
The gunfire ceased, but the world didn’t grow quiet. The shot tail collapsed on the ground but continued to curse desperately.
The already congested lane was now completely blocked.
The French weren’t quite used to such sudden gunfights, whereas Americans would’ve scattered long ago, but here, at least half of the people were still in their cars.
Feng Biao and Li Jie, holding pistols, approached the gunman who seemed to have a death wish from both sides.
It was too eerie, they had to get answers or else it would be too unsettling.
"Capture a living one for questioning. Don’t kill him!"
Gao Yi could do whatever he pleased, naturally preferring his own side to act without any plan, capriciously. But if the enemy did the same, he couldn’t stand it.
No one likes an enemy that’s completely unpredictable.
Feng Biao rushed up and stepped on the gunman’s injured right hand, aiming the gun at the gunman’s head.
Li Jie shouted, "Why did you start shooting all of a sudden?"
Li Jie didn’t expect the gunman to answer.
But the gunman broke down emotionally. He had already lost his reason, and now, having been shot twice, with one bullet hitting his torso, there was no way he could survive.
"Damn Frenchmen! I could have surveilled you quietly all the way to Paris, but they made a blockade again."
The gunman spoke in English, with a heavy UK accent.
The gunman appeared to be in his twenties. Blood spewed from his mouth as he roared in despair, "Andic asked me to delay you, damn it! How do I delay? They told me to attack you, so I attacked. They wanted me to die, the French wanted me dead, Andic wanted me dead. Go ahead and kill me, I’ve had enough!"
Li Jie and Feng Biao were really stunned.
The hastily arriving Gao Yi listened, completely baffled. Was this a total abandonment followed by a refusal to live?
The gunman being stepped on shouted angrily, "Get your foot off me! You damn jerks, wouldn’t it be fine to just enter Paris properly, why turn around all of a sudden? The road isn’t blocked up, why turn around! I hate you, I hate the French, all of you go die!"
Gao Yi said sternly, "What did you mean by saying we should go to Paris?"
"You’re done for, all of you are done for, all of France’s assassins are coming for you, haha, let’s die together, die together!"
Gao Yi looked at Feng Biao, then turned his head to look at Luca who had arrived.
Luca spread his hands, whispering, "It’s definitely another big mission from the Dark Web."
Gao Yi whispered back, "No, this guy is definitely from the Andic Group. I think...well, Andic’s and the Dark Web’s missions aren’t conflicting. What I want to know more now is how he was tracking us all the time."
After finishing his words, Gao Yi pressed the gun muzzle against the gunman’s head and said, "Tell me, how were you tracking us?"
"Do you think everyone is as stupid as the French police? I fucking know your license plate number! Damn it! I know your license plate number, I know which road you’re on, so how could I not find you!"
The assassin was also a gunman, currently in a frenzied state.
What could have driven this kid to such a state?
"I could have taken the high-speed train from Bordeaux to Paris to wait for you, damn it, Bordeaux station was on strike! I could have driven after you to Paris, but those damn French made a blockade, they didn’t have to die, but now I am ordered to hold you at all costs, how the hell do I do that!"
The gunman was filled with despair and anger. His voice grew weaker, but he still tried his best to lift his trembling left hand, letting out a final roar.
"What else can the French police do, what are you really up to..."
After saying that, the gunman’s hand fell, his head tilted, and he was dead.
"Uh, well, I don’t know what to say anymore."
Gao Yi looked around, raised his hand, and said, "We’ve been completely blocked."
"Abandon the car, move fast, grab our weapons, it’s going to be a tough fight ahead."
Feng Biao had an expression of utter annoyance, "It’s so disgusting we’ve been trapped by a traffic jam, this kid’s approach had only one possibility, to buy time for the main force to get here."
Lin Xianghua came over with a rifle in hand, he just looked and didn’t say a word.
Li Jie was puzzled and asked, "What could this main force be?"
Gao Yi replied irritably, "Definitely not the police. If the police could come, this guy wouldn’t have been pissed to death."
"Then it must be assassins from the Andic Group, that’s troublesome..."
Luca clearly wasn’t afraid of French police, but he was afraid of Andic’s assassins.
"It could also be CIA agents."
As soon as he said it, Gao Yi regretted it, because he saw Luca’s face get even worse.
"Don’t be so cowardly. Big Brother said he’d protect us, this isn’t the United States after all. If we can just hold on, Big Brother can put pressure on France, maybe even French troops will come to rescue us. So, the situation isn’t that bad."
After that, Gao Yi looked back at the increasingly long traffic jam, saying, "Run backwards toward the end of the jam, then grab a car and continue driving."
Feng Biao whispered, "Boss, wrong direction. Think about it, if Big Brother can get France to intervene to protect us, then we should be running into central Paris."
"That makes sense!"
Gao Yi wasn’t someone who acted solely on impulse, he found Feng Biao’s point sensible. Without further ado, he pointed toward Paris and said, "Go, seize a car and continue to the heart of Paris."
They set off immediately. Feng Biao returned to his car, opened the door, and picked up his sniper rifle from the back seat. He then grabbed the ammo bag and followed Gao Yi’s lead, turning around and running back toward Paris.
This volte-face was truly quintessential.
Without a plan, let the enemy make their predictions, if they could guess correctly, then credit to them.
