Chapter 233: Chapter 221: The Way to Treat Guests
Seeking refuge in a police station to avoid assassination was indeed a creative idea.Aside from being somewhat out of date, the rest was quite normal.
Lucy looked at the old policeman with a gaze full of care, as if looking at someone mentally challenged, while the younger Aliza looked at his colleague as if he had seen a ghost.
Gao Yi fell into deep thought.
Finally, Aliza couldn’t help it, and whispered, "This gentleman is just joking, haha..."
The laughter was filled with awkwardness, but more so with fear.
George, the old policeman, said again, "No, no, no, I’m not joking."
George glared fiercely at Aliza, then turned his head half-seriously and said, "Sir, think about it, if you say those helicopters are looking for you, then it’s clear that it’s not an official French action. I don’t know if you are caught up in gang vendettas or some other issue, but it’s obvious you need a safe place to temporarily take refuge, am I right?"
Gao Yi nodded, "Yes, you’re right."
"Then isn’t the police station a good choice? I am absolutely not trying to trick you into the police station, I mean no such thing, sir. I’m retiring in seven months, and I hope to have a substantial retirement fund to go on vacation with my girlfriend and enjoy the rest of my life, rather than getting a large sum of survivor benefits, so I definitely wouldn’t put you in a dangerous situation."
George spoke hurriedly in one breath, took a deep breath fearing that Gao Yi would interrupt him and that his colleague would say more foolish things.
"Then, the police station I suggest you go to is not the one we work at but a remote municipal police station in the southern suburbs of Paris. It only has nine policemen. It’s already 5:30 PM, work hours are over, and only one policeman is on duty. I know all the policemen there; I’ll just tell them you are friends who need to momentarily take cover, or simply that you are here to file a report. What harm could there be in staying inside the station overnight?
Moreover, most importantly, there is a detention room in the station. You can lock us in there; the whole station will be yours. You can leave or sleep as you like. Is there a safer and more suitable temporary hideout than a police station?"
After George had finished, Lucy sank into thought, and Gao Yi nodded, "You make sense."
Aliza was stunned for a long time, and then suddenly he said, "That’s right, that makes sense. You could lock us in the detention room, and then you wouldn’t need to kill us, right?"
George turned to Aliza and said, "Shut up, this gentleman is kind, he won’t kill us!"
Indeed, experience trumps youth.
Through the few conversations in the walkie-talkie, Gao Yi’s concern about helicopters, and their direction in hijacking this police car to escape, George accurately assessed the situation of Gao Yi and his companions. It seemed risky, but George kindly offered a good hiding spot.
In fact, Gao Yi really hadn’t planned to kill them. He just thought that riding in a police car was faster than driving his own. Even after reaching the place, he would let these two good policemen go.
"Okay, let’s go to the police station."
Gao Yi finally agreed to go to the police station.
George immediately said, "We are currently in Essonne, a part of Greater Paris, both of us are police officers from Dordogne City Police Station in Essonne, but the station we are going to is Senat Forest Police Station, under the jurisdiction of Dordogne City. It’s the most remote station with the least incidents. Dordogne City is surrounded by forests and is a popular vacation spot for Parisians, filled with numerous historical relics. So, sir, whether you want to slip away through woodland paths or disguise yourself as a foreign tourist to leave, it will be very convenient!"
"Hmm, not bad."
One must admit, George, with his old craftiness, described conditions that were indeed very suitable for Gao Yi and his companions urgent need to hide.
George turned to Aliza, calmly saying, "While I was introducing this to this gentleman, you know the way, right?"
"Uh, yes..."
Aliza turned the steering wheel, and the police car left the main road, entering a smaller road.
After turning onto the small road, they couldn’t head towards Paris anymore.
As Li Jie followed the police car, George kept on describing the scenery along the way, like suddenly mentioning the name of a castle that appeared, when it was built, and by whom. His mouth didn’t stop moving the entire trip.
Unexpectedly, the best tour guide one could find in France was an old policeman.
Finally, they arrived at the police station.
It indeed had many trees, but it could not be considered a forest, and the station wasn’t as remote as Gao Yi had imagined—it was on the edge of a small town, right beside a highway.
The station had a yard with four police cars parked inside. The main building of the station wasn’t very large, built with the common red bricks in French rural areas and covered with climbing ivy, giving it a serene, beautiful, and historically rich appearance.
"I’ve worked here for about twenty years, such fond memories..."
George didn’t look fat, the stubble on his chin was slightly white, his physique was still quite good, and his perfume wasn’t overpowering. He was charming when he explained with a smile.
Gao Yi couldn’t help but ask, "You’re retiring soon?"
"Yes, in seven more months I’ll be sixty-two years old, and then I can retire. The retirement age for police in France is sixty-two. I heard they’re planning to extend it to sixty-four. We’ll definitely strike to protest the extension. It’s exploitation."
The car stopped in the courtyard of the police station, but George didn’t get out. He finished speaking before he turned to Gao Yi and said, "Can I step out and greet my colleagues inside? Let them know not to be nervous, we’re just visiting, is that okay?"
"Um, that’s fine."
Gao Yi opened the car door and smiled as he said, "You go in with him."
Gao Yi didn’t follow them inside; he asked Lucy to go in and take a look.
Mainly because Lucy understood French, so even if George said something, she could understand.
Lucy and George got out of the car together. George took a deep breath and then politely made a gesture for Lucy to go ahead, but he couldn’t possibly let Lucy walk in front. Instead, he moved sideways, half a step forward, and opened the door of the police station.
Normally, he should have held the door for Lucy to enter first then followed, which is the common courtesy of letting a lady through a door. But George couldn’t allow any room for misunderstandings, so he went in first, holding the door with one hand and his hat with the other.
It was an offer to raise both hands, letting Lucy know he definitely wouldn’t draw his gun.
Speaking of which, Gao Yi hadn’t taken the pistols from the two police officers.
In the lobby of the police station sat a police officer about George’s age. When he saw George appear and hold the door for a lady, the seated officer exclaimed in astonishment, "George, what the... My God!"
George said nothing and made no move; Lucy had just entered and hadn’t drawn her gun or even had a chance to speak. The police officer in the lobby stood up from behind a reception desk, raising both hands.
Lucy was flabbergasted. She looked at the officer who had stood up and raised his hands, then at George, who still held his hat in one hand and the door in the other. After a moment’s thought, she couldn’t help saying, "I haven’t said anything."
"You don’t have to say anything, I understand!"
The officer behind the desk nodded to Lucy and then looked at George. "Can you explain what’s going on?"
George casually replied, "Sorry, but I need a safe place. Is anyone in the holding cell?"
"No one. The last time we detained a drunk was two months ago; it’s very clean and spacious. The keys are hanging over there."
The officer behind the desk didn’t move his arms; he pointed with his finger toward a bunch of keys hanging on the wall beside him.
Just then, Gao Yi came in.
Ali was behind Gao Yi, but Feng Biao and Lin Xianghua were behind Ali.
Seeing the guns in Feng Biao and Lin Xianghua’s hands, the officer behind the reception desk involuntarily straightened his arms, raising his hands even higher.
Lucy looked at Gao Yi, her face blank. "I didn’t say anything, but it seems like nothing needs to be said."
Gao Yi looked at George, who was close by.
George earnestly said, "We haven’t experienced this kind of situation before, but we know what to do. Sir, the keys to the holding cell are on the wall. May I put away my gun, radio, and phone, and then we can go into the cell?"
Gao Yi had his eyes opened today and gained new insights.
Thinking for a moment, Gao Yi suddenly smiled and said, "No need, there’s no necessity for that."
The three police officers’ faces changed drastically, Aliza looked slightly panicked, George appeared completely hopeless.
Gao Yi quickly said, "There’s no need to be so tense, I already know you all are smart, so why bother staying in the cell? Relax, let’s talk and have some coffee until it’s time to leave."
Why ruin such a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere? No need for such tension.
Gao Yi was unpredictable, which confused George a bit.
Gao Yi put away his gun and smiled, "Put your hands down, take out the guns, and then just relax. We won’t be staying long."
Gao Yi tried his best to ease the atmosphere, but seeing George still tense, he could only say, "Of course, if you really would prefer to stay in the cell, then go ahead."
Finally convinced by Gao Yi’s words, George immediately said, "Thank you! I think it’s better to go into the holding cell, so we can all rest properly."
The officer behind the reception immediately said, "There’s a lounge in the back with a coffee machine and drinks. Additionally, our break room has beds. Would you like something to eat? Uh, we have frozen pizza. If you don’t like frozen food, we can call for delivery..."
This rest stop was perfect, truly ideal.
Gao Yi was indeed tired and hungry, so he happily said, "Thank you, we’ll need all of that. Thanks for your warm hospitality. Relax, everything’s fine now."
