Chapter 905: Chapter 906 Toxic Fatherly Love 38
When Zhang Yu and Wang Lei got into the Wang Family’s car, she hadn’t noticed that, aside from Li Cuifen, someone else was waiting outside the exam venue, ready to take her out for a meal.
He planned to discuss what he had learned about the college entrance exam papers and analyze the situations of various universities.
To ensure he wouldn’t miss Zhang Yu, he even left work early to wait by the exam venue.
He saw her, didn’t miss her, but he hadn’t expected this: while he managed to see her, he found himself helplessly watching as Zhang Yu and another girl got into a car.
He wanted to chase after them, but the surrounding crowd held him back. By the time he pushed through the crowd, the car was already gone.
This infuriated him immensely. Just like that, she slipped past him right in front of his eyes. Who knows when he’d get the chance to see her again?
Now that the college entrance exam was over, meeting Zhang Yu in the future wouldn’t be easy. He tried every way to inquire about where she currently lived, hoping he could visit her.
Using some connections, he managed to track down her contact address, only to discover it was the old house. He knew this path wouldn’t lead anywhere.
He then thought about checking the address Zhang Yu had filled out for university applications or where her college acceptance letter would be sent.
Initially, he thought this wouldn’t be difficult, but as it turned out, this information was off-limits.
This enraged him even more. During the university application process, he tried seeking out Zhang Yu, but she never showed up, and he couldn’t provide her with any analysis.
He roughly guessed which university Zhang Yu might attend, carefully studied the programs offered by those schools, and even prepared a plan for her—like the certifications she should aim for during her university years.
Of course, the most crucial thing was joining the student union. With such credentials, entering the job market would become significantly easier.
Wu Hao, dejected, returned home, surprising Feng Min, who hadn’t prepared dinner for him.
"You... you didn’t go find Zhang Yu and have dinner together?" she asked. At this hour, he should’ve been eating.
"I saw her," Wu Hao said unhappily, "but she got into a car."
"If only I had a car..." With more coworkers around him buying cars, Wu Hao’s desire to own one flared up again.
"She got into a car?" Feng Min replied with an "oh." "Don’t you know where she lives? Soon enough, she won’t be going to school anymore. What are you going to do?"
Feng Min didn’t particularly want Wu Hao and Zhang Yu to stay in contact, but there was no choice. They’d had children at a relatively older age, and their career paths hadn’t been smooth.
And then there’s Wu Min—this girl was something else entirely, perpetually defiant and unwilling to admit when she was wrong.
Feng Min shot a fierce glare at Wu Min, who didn’t take it seriously. Seeing her attitude only aggravated Feng Min further, prompting her to tap Wu Min’s head with her finger.
"Can you pass your final exams this time?" Feng Min had stopped expecting Wu Min to achieve excellent grades; her hopes had been lowered to just passing.
"I don’t know." Wu Min replied indifferently. "Relax. Even if I don’t pass, I won’t be held back a year."
"Compulsory education doesn’t allow for repeating grades." Wu Min knew her remark would further provoke Feng Min, so she bluntly returned to her room.
Watching Wu Min’s disobedience, Feng Min stormed with fury and felt the urge to make her pay for her insolence.
Wu Hao stopped Feng Min. "Let it go. She’ll understand when she’s older."
"Isn’t she already old enough?" Feng Min snapped at Wu Hao.
"Zhang Yu didn’t start pushing herself until her senior year. Her grades weren’t great either before that."
"But she’s still got to qualify for high school exams. Can Wu Min’s grades even make it to high school?" Feng Min retorted angrily.
"She’ll find a way to support herself eventually," Wu Hao said, having given up on Wu Min and unwilling to expend more effort on his daughter.
"You’d better keep an eye on your son." Feng Min remarked bitterly. If the daughter turned out to be a lost cause, so be it, but the son couldn’t afford to go astray.
In her room, Wu Min heard Wu Hao’s words, and her heart felt cold.
She had always believed Wu Hao treated her well, far better than the stern Feng Min. Now, she realized he simply didn’t care, didn’t hold her in his heart.
For Wu Jian, however, he would institute strict discipline without hesitation.
Wu Jian, doing exercises in his room, noticed Wu Min returning and merely glanced at her without speaking.
Over the last few months, the relationship between the siblings had visibly grown colder.
They avoided talking whenever possible. Even when in the same room, they could go an entire day without exchanging a word.
Wu Min looked at Wu Jian quietly studying, feeling an incredible bitterness inside.
She remembered what Zhang Yu had said to her during their last conversation: Wu Hao was someone who only used his closest family members, and when it came down to it, one could only rely on oneself.
Back then, Wu Min thought Zhang Yu’s words were perhaps too extreme. Now, she realized how well Zhang Yu understood Wu Hao.
Her family’s attitude was evident—they had simply given up on her. Did they seriously think she would scrape by with failing grades until middle school graduation?
If that’s what they thought, would they finally show her some concern then? Reality proved otherwise—they would just abandon her outright.
She couldn’t give up on herself. Wu Min thought of Zhang Yu; if Zhang Yu could achieve what she did, why couldn’t she?
With this in mind, Wu Min pulled out her homework from her schoolbag and earnestly started working. Wu Jian noticed her sitting down to do homework and felt surprised, giving her several glances before returning to his own exercises.
Wu Min was aware that Wu Jian had been watching her multiple times, but she ignored him. She felt her time was better spent concentrating on her studies.
When Feng Min called the two kids for dinner and noticed Wu Min doing homework, she was a little surprised but didn’t give it much thought.
In her mind, this was probably just another one of Wu Min’s bizarre whims.
Right now, the couple was stressed out. They hadn’t managed to contact Zhang Yu and were stuck figuring out how to mend their relationship with her.
The two discussed searching for Zhang Yu well into bedtime, while their discussion’s focus quietly packed her belongings.
Tomorrow morning, they would set off for their post-exam life of leisure and travel.
As for studying, that would be reserved for university semester openings. It wasn’t something she intended to think about right now.
The next day, the four of them met up at the train station, and the four women embarked on their journey.
Wang Lei was surprised to see Zhang Yu had brought Aunt Huang along.
"Aunt Huang has more free time now. Besides, with Aunt Huang accompanying Grandma, we can have even more fun." Some places Grandma couldn’t go.
In the past, Zhang Yu would stay with Grandma, but now, with Aunt Huang present, Grandma had company, allowing Zhang Yu to enjoy her time with Wang Lei more freely.
As for the extra expenses of having an additional person, how much could it really add?
Wang Lei agreed after thinking it over. "Sounds relaxing. Nice."
"Oh, by the way, I brought a big bag of snacks." Wang Lei patted the bag in her hand. "After I got home yesterday, I specifically went shopping for it."
Looking at the large bag and the proud expression on Wang Lei’s face, Zhang Yu could only think: she truly acted like a country bumpkin.
But once they boarded the train, snacking while chatting turned out to be delightful. The snacks were delicious, and Zhang Yu decided that next time she traveled, snacks would be a must.
