Chapter 906: Chapter 907 Toxic Fatherly Love 39
The two students about to take the college entrance exam were having so much fun that they’d completely forgotten to check their scores.
They’d gotten carried away with play, but how could Wang Lei’s parents possibly forget?
After all, this was the moment to evaluate the results of their daughter’s years of hard work—it was something they had to remember.
Father Wang checked his daughter’s scores first, then looked up Zhang Yu’s results. When he saw Zhang Yu’s scores, he was stunned.
Mother Wang noticed Father Wang’s expression. "What’s wrong?"
Father Wang took a deep breath and read out Wang Lei’s scores for each subject. After hearing them, Mother Wang gasped as well.
"Better than her mock exam results." Usually, students’ results in college entrance exams are close to their mock exams—large discrepancies are rare unless there’s been a major change in difficulty level.
"I think I heard that this year’s college entrance exam was supposed to be tough, so why...?" Mother Wang said, then added, "Zhang Yu must be deliberately holding back in her previous tests. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have improved this quickly."
Father Wang hummed in agreement. "She definitely held back on purpose."
He didn’t mind, though. "Anyway, having our Little Lei study with her has truly been a great boost."
Mother Wang couldn’t stop nodding. "That’s right. Honestly, I only hoped Little Lei could get into any university—never expected such a pleasant surprise."
Mother Wang thought about their relatives who’d always acted smug. "Our daughter surely can get into F University, right?"
Even so, she was a little concerned; after all, F University was extraordinarily prestigious.
"Barring any major surprises, it shouldn’t be a problem," Father Wang said. Though he hadn’t smoked in years, such a big occasion made him unable to resist lighting one up.
Mother Wang noticed his action and opened her mouth as if to speak but decided against it. "By the way, how should we thank Little Yu?"
Father Wang found himself stumped. "You’re asking me? I have no idea either."
"She and her grandmother are just two people—a sick elder and a young girl who hasn’t even started university."
"But they really don’t lack for money. The old lady’s pension is substantial, and the rental income from their properties comes to tens of thousands." After hearing from Wang Lei about Zhang Yu’s family situation, Father Wang dismissed any ideas of financial gestures.
"I’ve thought it over. We only have one daughter, and her relationships with her cousins are just so-so, at best."
Mother Wang stayed quiet, and Father Wang continued, seeing that she didn’t refute him. "Whether it’s your side of the family or mine, to put it bluntly, most of them see us having just one daughter and want to take advantage under the guise of support for Little Lei."
"In the past, when Little Lei’s grades were average and she was easy-going, I thought having siblings to support her might be a good thing."
"But now, Little Lei’s grades have improved and her social skills are strong."
"She can stand tall on her own—that’s better than anything else."
"If she and Little Yu can support each other in the future, I think that’d be great." Father Wang genuinely felt disdain for most of their relatives—their attitude was simply unpleasant.
After a long silence, Mother Wang sighed, "Yes, all those people constantly angling for perks instead of making any real effort themselves."
"Having Little Lei and Little Yu keep in touch more would be a positive thing."
"Little Yu is quite pitiful, having a father like that." Mother Wang didn’t think Zhang Yu should reconcile with her biological father; his behavior was far from what a father ought to show.
"Better this way—it’ll only further improve her relationship with our daughter." Father Wang wasn’t impressed by Wu Hao’s actions either.
"Those two are just too calculating, constantly thinking they’re so clever without realizing no boss would appreciate someone as opportunistic as them."
A quick inquiry into Wu Hao and Feng Min’s situation would reveal their lack of career advancement wasn’t due to office politics but rather their own ineptitude.
"They should count themselves lucky they were among the earliest university graduates after the reforms—otherwise..." With how things were, even their current positions might not be guaranteed.
That evening, Wang Lei called home for a chat. Upon learning both her and Zhang Yu’s exam scores, she was ecstatic—so overjoyed she started bouncing around her room.
When Zhang Yu heard her scores from Wang Lei, she remained calm—it was within the range she’d anticipated.
"Looks like F University is solid," Zhang Yu said, watching Wang Lei’s excitement over potentially gaining admission.
"Exactly, I can get into F University! At future family gatherings, anyone daring to bring up exam scores—I’ll shut them down completely."
"If their kid’s so great, let’s see them get into F University’s top programs."
"It’s so tiresome listening to them brag about their kid’s stellar results. What’s there to show off? Different schools use different tests—what’s the point of comparing?"
"College admission will be the real deal."
"Originally, I thought getting into university wasn’t worth flaunting. It’s not like we haven’t seen the world."
"But once I saw my score, I realized I totally could flaunt it."
"Their college entrance exam scores weren’t even as good as mine, and yet they brag non-stop."
"No reason I can’t boast when mine are better."
"We’re going to the finest hotel—I want to see their strained faces."
"They’ll be nursing their grudges internally, yet forced to congratulate me on the surface." Thinking about all this made Wang Lei ecstatic.
"By the way, how do you think your grandmother will reward you after hearing about your amazing score?" Wang Lei knew Zhang Yu wouldn’t host a banquet; they didn’t have familial ties with anyone.
That much, Zhang Yu shrugged. "I haven’t asked her. As a student, doing well on exams is just my job."
"And whatever I like, as long as I mention it, Grandma always gets it for me."
Besides, Zhang Yu wasn’t your ordinary young girl—she’d experienced too much already. Small, petty perks didn’t even register to her.
Wang Lei shot Zhang Yu an indignant look. "My relatives always say my parents spoil me, but I wish they’d see what true spoiling looks like."
"When parents spoil their kids, they still exercise restraint—it’s nothing like indulgence to the point of excess. But grandparents? They spoil kids for real."
"And since I’m Grandma’s only family, how could she possibly not treat me well?"
"If it were up to me, I’d want my parents to spoil me too."
When Wang Lei heard Zhang Yu’s words, she apologized on the spot. "Little Yu, I’m sorry—I didn’t mean it."
"In that case, don’t forget to treat me to ice cream," Zhang Yu quipped, shifting moods instantly.
"Alright, I haven’t told Grandma yet. I have to share this incredible news with her."
"Yes, yes, you must." Although Zhang Yu’s sudden change of tone was quick, Wang Lei understood it reflected what Zhang Yu truly wanted—what she’d said before was just to stop Wang Lei from worrying.
Li Cuifen lay on her bed, still discussing exam results with Aunt Huang, when Wang Lei burst into the room and announced Zhang Yu’s scores. Both women were stunned.
Aunt Huang couldn’t stop congratulating Zhang Yu; though not a live-in nanny, she knew all about Zhang Yu’s perseverance—the piles of practice books measured in stacks, and the endless pages of rough drafts were constant reminders.
Li Cuifen was dazed upon hearing the score. "Little Yu, Little Yu, is this truly your result?"
"Of course—it’s mine, who else’s would it be?"
"Are you happy? Surprised?" Zhang Yu carefully helped Li Cuifen, worried she might faint from joy.
The old woman nodded repeatedly. "Happy—I’m truly happy."
Even though she’d always known her granddaughter did well, she never imagined results this outstanding.
