Chapter 904: Chapter 905 Toxic Fatherly Love 37

The day of the college entrance exam arrived quickly, and with Aunt Huang’s help, Li Cuifen went straight to the exam school to scope out the venue.

It was only then that the old lady remembered she had forgotten something very important, "I forgot to book a room near the exam venue for you."

Book a room? Zhang Yu froze. These days, the college entrance exam has become a very ceremonious event.

Things like wearing cheongsams, for instance. As for booking a room near the exam venue, that’s a normal procedure designed to ensure candidates can rest well and avoid the possibility of being late.

Nowadays, not many parents go to such lengths, but unexpectedly, the old lady turned out to be so thoughtful.

"No need, Grandma. I’ll just take a cab back and forth each day."

"Besides, the ride can help me relax my mind."

"The college entrance exam is very stressful. I prefer to rest in a familiar place. If I stay somewhere unfamiliar, while I can still rest, there’ll still be a bit of tension."

Zhang Yu reassured her, "Also, I don’t want to be constantly staring at the exam site—it’s just too much pressure."

"Then where will you eat lunch?" The old lady was concerned about that.

"It’s not that far. I’ll just take a cab back home," Zhang Yu had already thought it through, "and I can rest a little, too."

"If I stay at the exam site, I’ll run into tons of classmates. They’ll want to compare answers after every test—what am I supposed to do then?"

"It’s better for me to come home every day."

Li Cuifen responded with an "oh." "What about Wang Lei?"

"Her? Her grandmother’s house is near the exam venue, so she’ll eat there."

"Her dad is taking her to the exam." Zhang Yu casually added, "Wang Lei’s dad offered to pick me up, but I declined."

"The Wang Family’s route to the venue is convenient, but coming to our house would be out of the way."

She had a great relationship with Wang Lei, and also with Wang Lei’s parents. Every time her parents went on business trips, they would bring gifts for them.

Sometimes when Wang Lei’s parents were both out on trips, Wang Lei would stay at Zhang Yu’s place. The relationship between the two families was truly exceptional.

"It’s fine, let’s not complicate things. We’ll just take a cab," Li Cuifen knew the college entrance exam wasn’t something to treat lightly.

"Are you absolutely sure you don’t want me to take you to the venue?" The old lady still couldn’t feel at ease, wanting to accompany Zhang Yu to the exam site but getting rejected again.

"No need. If you take me to the venue, I’ll be worried about whether you’ll get back home safely by cab. I’d be all kinds of distracted."

"Just stay home and pray for me." Zhang Yu quickly assigned a task to the old lady.

Li Cuifen nodded repeatedly. "No problem, no problem. I’ve already checked; I know which temples are effective."

The old lady had made quite a few friends and had gathered plenty of useful information—she practically specialized in it.

No need to elaborate; she was familiar with details like the signature dishes at nearby restaurants, among other things.

Every time she tried a place, she would bring Zhang Yu along to eat and would meticulously explain every dish, analyzing it thoroughly.

Zhang Yu even wanted to suggest that Li Cuifen could become a food blogger and write reviews to post online.

It’s just that, given the current state of the internet, it wasn’t quite developed enough yet. But in about ten years, once video-sharing sites emerged, she could take Li Cuifen out to explore restaurants and make videos.

Even if they couldn’t shoot videos, writing reviews would be enough.

Li Cuifen, however, politely declined the suggestion. The old lady’s stance was that she wasn’t a food critic; she just analyzed based on her own taste.

After the college entrance exams ended, Zhang Yu planned to take Li Cuifen traveling, eating and drinking their way through various destinations. Surely she could convince her eventually.

The three-day exam concluded smoothly, and after the final test, Wang Lei’s parents showed up at the exam site along with Li Cuifen.

The two families had already agreed to gather for a celebratory dinner once the exams were over.

Zhang Yu could tell that Wang Lei’s parents really wanted to know how their child had performed but didn’t dare ask outright.

"I think I did pretty well. Nothing too challenging. I should be able to get into F University."

Wang Lei was very composed. She was calm, but her parents certainly weren’t. "F University?"

They knew Wang Lei had always dreamt of getting into F University, which was also the alma mater of both parents. Yet they were aware of her usual grades and never dared harbor such expectations, fearing it would place undue pressure on their child.

Even in her senior year, while her grades kept steadily improving, they still didn’t dare dream of it.

Now that Wang Lei had sprung such a big surprise on them, how could they not be overjoyed?

They knew Wang Lei’s stellar performance was all thanks to Zhang Yu’s influence.

If it weren’t for her motivating Wang Lei, their child wouldn’t have progressed this much.

The Wang Family couple constantly mulled over how to express their gratitude but couldn’t figure out an opportunity.

Despite Zhang Yu living alone with her grandmother, their living conditions were far from poor. When the elderly lady had been diagnosed with cancer, they promptly bought a house near the hospital, which spoke volumes about their affluence.

The Wang Family had some ideas but didn’t know how to broach the subject.

After the five of them finished dinner, Father Wang dropped Li Cuifen and Zhang Yu off downstairs before driving home.

On the way back, Father Wang shared his thoughts aloud, asking Wang Lei what she thought.

Wang Lei was stunned. "Dad, Mom, how did you come up with that idea?"

"I understand Zhang Yu. She doesn’t harbor much expectation when it comes to her parents’ affection."

"No expectation?" Father Wang was taken aback. In his mind, no matter who or at what point in life, there’s always some yearning for parental love. How could Zhang Yu feel this way?

Wang Lei nodded and brought up Wu Hao’s antics from recent days. "With a father like that, how could Zhang Yu have expectations?"

"As for maternal love, Zhang Yu has mentioned that she remembers her mom’s kindness and her grandma’s as well."

"Even though she grew up in an environment without her dad, she’s happy. Her late mother and grandmother both treated her very well."

"Her childhood was joyous, and she doesn’t want any so-called elders taking a dominant role above her anymore." Wang Lei found Zhang Yu’s perspective entirely understandable.

Wang Lei’s parents, hearing this, abandoned their initial idea, exchanging glances as they wondered what to do next.

Wang Lei noticed her parents exchanging looks. "Dad, Mom, you’re wanting to thank Zhang Yu, aren’t you?"

"Shouldn’t we thank her?" Mother Wang replied with exaggerated exasperation.

"No need, really no need," Wang Lei assured them. "The bond between Zhang Yu and me doesn’t require something like gifts to manifest."

"She and I will be the best of friends."

"Though we’re not blood relatives, our connection is even better than that of relatives who share DNA."

"Oh, Mom, I’m preparing for the trip tomorrow." Tomorrow would mark their travel day, and just thinking about it made her excited.

"This vacation, I plan to visit tons of places," Wang Lei declared, determined to unwind fully after months of hard work.

"Take the card; it’s your turn to spend, so don’t be stingy." Father Wang knew his daughter wasn’t one to scrimp, but he reminded her
