Chapter 76: The assassin left.

The dust still hadn’t settled.

A heavy fog of smoke and dust lingered over the destroyed training field of Arcadia Academy—Ground Zero.

Just a short while ago, this place had turned into a battlefield when a crazed assassin launched a sudden and violent attack. Now, the once-green grass was torn apart. The earth was broken, with deep cracks running across it.

Large craters dotted the field like it had been hit by falling stars, leaving the land scarred and ruined.

In the middle of the destruction stood Edwin. He was slightly bent forward, holding one hand tightly over a deep wound on his side. Blood slowly seeped through his fingers, staining his uniform.

On the other hand, he still held his sword, refusing to let it go even in pain.

Next to him was Elysia. She leaned heavily on her swords, using them like crutches to stay standing.

Her chest rose and fell quickly as she tried to catch her breath. Sweat dripped down her face, sticking strands of her silver hair to her cheeks.

She looked exhausted but determined. fre\e(w)ebn ov.e l\. co.m

Behind them stood Jin. His clothes were dusty, and his expression was serious. Though he wasn’t as injured as Edwin or Elysia, the shock of the battle still lingered in his eyes.

They somehow survived the assassin’s rampage.

At least, that’s what they thought.

A faint, eerie chuckle echoed through the smoke that still hung in the air.

Jin narrowed his eyes, his body going stiff. "...He’s still alive?" he whispered, his voice shaking with disbelief.

Out of the dusty haze and broken rubble, he began to appear. Step by step, the assassin came into view. His clothes were torn and soaked with blood. Cuts and bruises covered his body, and blood dripped from the corner of his mouth.

He looked like he should’ve been dead—but he wasn’t.

His face twisted into a wide, wild grin that made everyone’s skin crawl. His eyes were full of madness, glowing with something dangerous and unstable. He staggered forward, laughing—no, cackling—a sharp, insane sound that echoed across the ruined field.

"HAHAHAHAHA!" The laugh was loud and full of madness, sending a wave of fear through the students nearby. Some took a step back instinctively.

"Not bad... not bad at all..." the assassin muttered, breathing heavily. Though he was clearly wounded and exhausted, there was amusement in his voice—like he had enjoyed every second of the deadly fight.

His crazed eyes sparkled with twisted excitement, and the way he grinned made it clear: to him, this had been a game, not a battle.

Edwin, Elysia, and Jin didn’t let their guard down for a second. Despite their tired bodies and burning muscles, they quickly stepped into position, weapons raised. Edwin gritted his teeth, still clutching his bleeding side.

Elysia steadied her swords, forcing her shaking arms to obey. Jin clenched his fists tightly, every sense alert.

They were injured. Drained. Barely standing.

But if the assassin attacked again, they would fight.

They had thought the battle was over. That it was finally done.

But now... doubt crept in.

Suddenly, the assassin lifted his hand. His fingers twitched oddly, like a broken puppet being pulled by invisible strings.

With a chilling growl in his voice, he spoke one final warning.

"Next time we meet..." he said, his tone laced with venom, "you’ll all be dead."

Then, without waiting for a reply, he spun on his heel and took off—sprinting across the broken ground with shocking speed. His movements were swift and unnatural, like he was gliding through the smoke and wreckage.

Before anyone could move, shout, or chase him, he reached the edge of the wall that bordered the academy grounds. In the blink of an eye, his shadow disappeared between the trees, swallowed by the darkness.

And just like that... he was gone.

"No..." Edwin muttered, staggering forward. "No, he’s escaping..."

Elysia couldn’t hold herself up anymore. Her legs gave out, and she dropped to one knee, breathing heavily. Her swords clattered softly against the ground as she leaned on them for support.

"We were sure..." she whispered, her voice trembling with exhaustion and confusion. "We struck him down. He should have been dead..."

Jin stood nearby, fists clenched, his jaw tight with frustration. "He had that aura," he said, voice low and tense. "It wasn’t normal. It felt... wrong. Like something dark was keeping him alive.

Like a demon’s power was inside him."

The air grew still. The three of them stayed silent, staring at the place the assassin had disappeared. None of them could fully believe what had just happened. The shock of it all pressed down on their shoulders like a weight.

Then suddenly—thud thud thud—the sound of running footsteps echoed from the far side of the academy.

Dozens of professors appeared.

Worry and urgency filled every one of their faces.

The once-proud training field was now unrecognizable. Dust still hung in the air. Chunks of stone and broken walls lay scattered. Craters and scorch marks covered the ground. The very earth looked wounded.

At the front of the group was Principal Aldric. His expression was cold and serious, his long coat flaring behind him. Power radiated from him, and when he moved, it was like the wind itself shifted around his steps.

The group of professors slowed down as they reached the destroyed area. One by one, they stopped and looked around—taking in the devastation, the injured students, and the silence that followed the chaos.

No one said a word.

The battlefield spoke for itself.

"What in the world happened here?" The professor asked sharply, eyes darting from crater to crater. "Is anyone hurt? What is this—?"

One of the nearby students, still nursing a burn across her arm, stepped forward shakily.

"I-I saw it happen!" one of the students shouted, his voice shaking as he stepped forward. His face was pale, and his hands trembled.

"It was a man... no, not a man. A monster. He smashed through the academy’s outer gate like it was paper and came straight toward the training field. He was laughing the whole time—like he enjoyed it... like he came just to kill everyone here!"
