Chapter 158: Chapter 158 The Past (7) (Bonus)
"It was the only way?" My younger self’s hands trembled, his voice wavering.
He walked towards the princess. The princess took a few steps back until her back pressed against the bark of the tree.
"You killed my mate and my child? Not only that... you killed my brother’s mate too?" His claws elongated slowly.
The princess broke down in tears. "It was the only thing I could do... I had to do it... Prince Damon, it was for the good...ugh..."
Blood dripped down the princess’s mouth. She slowly looked down, four sharp claws pierced through her stomach to her back, injuring her wings.
"I told you, I will cut you piece by piece if a war happens. And you dared lay a finger on my mate?!" He twisted his claws in her stomach. He didn’t want her to die quickly... he wanted her to feel the pain he was feeling.
The princess’s face contorted with pain. Her hands held Damon’s claws in place. "I have wronged your kind greatly... I have wronged you." More blood splattered from her lips. "For this I’ll compensate... I’m not the goddess moon you served. But I am like a goddess too... I will bless you with a second mate... Ugh..." she groaned in pain as my younger self dug his claws deeper into her.
"I will not have a second mate!" he and Beowulf growled at the same time, their voices were like angry thunder.
The princess laughed, more blood spilling from her lips and stomach. "You are the last of your kind, Damon." My younger self turned to the baby in Ethan’s mate’s arms. "He is not a Lycan... yet. Your brother’s mate is human... it will take a while before his Lycan blood gets awakened... if it gets awakened."
"Shut up!" My younger self yelled ferociously, he tried to remove his claws so he could shut her up, but his claws were stuck in her stomach. "Magic," he growled in annoyance
"Like I said I will bless you with a second mate... but because you can hardly see the good in person... she will become something that will make you challenge your morals. Just a quick warning... with the blessing comes a curse." Her voice lowered. "As my apology to you, my magic will protect you, making you stronger than before... King Damon. I am deeply sorry for what I have caused you." she whimpered in pain.
"To hell with your gift!" My younger self pulled his claws out, before cutting the princess’s head off with his claws.
The moment the princess dropped to the ground, her blood began to float in the air, before entering the golden tree. The blood of Emelia and Ethan’s mate also floated towards the golden tree.
My younger self stared at it completely perplexed. He had no idea what was happening. Then the princess’s body began to disintegrate into flakes of ember. It floated in the sky circling the tree, the body of Emelia and Ethan’s mate began to disintegrate too.
They drifted in the sky before entering the golden tree.
My younger self fell to his knees. "NOOOO! DON’T TAKE HER FROM ME... PLEASE!" Nothing remained of them apart from their clothes.
Then the golden tree brightened, shining like a burning star. The young me and I shielded our eyes. The view was blinding.
"The golden tree has been restored? By blood?" He uttered in disbelief.
Then the trees that had lost their lives came back to life. Their green lives bloomed beautifully.
The earth that had been scarred black, returned to its normal colour. Everything that was death returned to life... except the people.
My younger self fell to his knees, his expression turned cold and his eyes were blank as if nothing mattered anymore.
The golden tree, then disintegrated into golden embers, drifting away in the air in spiralling motion.
My younger self should have worried about this... he should have questioned why the golden tree was gone. But nothing seemed to surprise him anymore and he didn’t care about it.
He knelt where Emelia’s body had once lain, he didn’t know how long he was there for. But his eyes moved to the rising sun. It was beautiful and serene with its golden rays, and the birds flew freely in the sky, singing and chirping happily.
But it looked dead to him.
The crying sound of the baby was the only thing that snapped his senses to reality. As he was about to go carry the baby, he caught something from the corner of his eye. It was Emelia’s locket.
He shakily reached for it and brought it to his chest. The guilt of failing his mate ate his soul up.
Then, his eyes fell on his still baby, and tears streamed down his face. "I’m sorry child. I couldn’t protect you or your mother."
He carried the child in one of his arms, then he moved to Ethan’s child. He gently carried him in his other arms. "It is just you and me." His voice cracked.
Then he turned to face the battlefield. Bodies covered the ground, and blood splattered everywhere. The tents were burned down, but only the ashes and the smoke remained.
I stood beside my younger self. I thought I had gone past this tragedy in my life. Revisiting it and reliving it made me understand that I have only shoved it down inside me, burying it in a box, whose key I have long since thrown away.
But why did I revisit my past... what was so important for me to see, that I have to relive this horror?
"Could it be the princess’s words?" Beowulf’s voice was weaker than before.
"Are you okay, White?" I was alarmed.
"I don’t know, but I feel my energy draining."
I looked back at the place where the tree once was. "The princess believes in kindness and unity, and I believe not in those things. We never believed her words when she said she would bless us with another mate... but she said the mate will be everything that challenges our morals..."
"Ember... half werewolf and half fae." Beowulf finished my sentence.
"It was a test Beowulf... one that we woefully failed. And I think this is the curse she was referring to."
