Chapter 159: Chapter 159 Gaining Control (Bonus)

A sharp jolt pulled me from the darkness.

My eyes blinked open to cold stone walls and a silver cell. The air felt thick, humid... and held a trace of blood. For a moment, I couldn’t tell where I was, whether I was still trapped in my memory or if I’d finally clawed my way back into the real world.

But when I tried to move, agony ripped through my limbs. A low growl escaped my throat before I could stop it.

My muscles spasmed violently, my bones shifting under my skin with a mind of their own. I felt my hands stretch into claws, then shrink back into fingers. My fangs elongated, then receded. Patches of fur covered my arms one second, gone the next.

Back and forth. Human. Wolf. Human. Wolf.

I was stuck between both, trapped in a violent tug-of-war with myself. I let out another ragged breath, bracing myself against the cold stone floor. Every nerve in my body was on fire. My heartbeat was erratic, pulsing too fast, like it didn’t know which body it belonged to.

I tried to sit up but collapsed back onto the floor.

Chains hung loosely against one wall, the kind they used for Lycans in transition. Deep claw marks were gouged into the stone, and the iron door across from me was shut tight. The scent of blood and old fear clung to every inch of the room.

I don’t remember how I got here. The last thing I remembered was Ember falling down the cliff. And I couldn’t save her, I watched her fall into the portal... out of my reach.

I felt bad inside, I wanted a chance for me to right my wrong. But I wasn’t sure if I was ready to accept her as my mate.

"She had already accepted our rejection. There is no bond between us." Beowulf muttered in my head.

Suddenly, something tugged softly at my chest. A soft pulse like a distant echo calling me through the distance.

I knew that feeling... It was a tracking bracelet I had given her.

’Ember.’

She was alive. My breath caught. My claws retracted halfway. My bones stopped shifting just for a second.

’Ember is alive.’

The thought became a chant in my mind. A tether to anchor me to myself.

’Ember is alive. Ember is alive. Ember is alive.’

I gritted my teeth and curled my fingers into fists. My claws tried to push out again, but I slammed my hands on the floor and forced them to stay human.

"Ember is alive," I whispered. My voice was raw, barely more than a breath.

The pain came in waves, burning, twisting, and stretching my bones. Sweat poured down my body, covering my naked body. My back arched, then slammed against the stone floor again. A growl tore out of my throat.

"Ember is alive," I repeated, louder this time.

My heart pounded so hard it felt like it might break through my chest. My vision blurred, and my skin kept shifting from fur to flesh, then fur again.

I closed my eyes and pictured her face.

Her ocean blue eyes were the most beautiful I had ever seen.

The little frown she got when she was annoyed.

The way she tilted her head when she was curious.

The way she ate like she had a monstrous stomach. She did have a monstrous stomach. I remembered the way she eats the food I dished out for her. The way she stuffed food in her mouth like a squirrel.

I remembered our time together, how she felt underneath me, her scent and how she tasted.

The last time I saw her, she was falling through that blue portal, unconscious and too far to reach.

But, now she was alive. That feeling from the bracelet, my magic reacting to hers, there was no way I was wrong.

"She’s alive," I whispered again, pressing a hand to my chest. "I have a chance to right my wrongs."

The more I focused on her, the more the rage and confusion faded. I still felt the pain, but it wasn’t as sharp anymore. My body trembled, but the shifting slowed.

My bones stopped snapping and my claws stayed in. Slowly, the fur faded from my arms.

I stayed like that for a while, breathing hard, letting my body cool down. I had no idea how much time had passed, but finally I was fully back in my human form.

I let out a long breath and rolled onto my back. My arms and legs felt heavy. My chest burned from all the growling and shifting, and I was soaked in sweat. Every muscle in my body ached.

I stared at the cracked ceiling above, my heartbeat finally slowing down.

"Ember," I whispered again. "Wait for me."

The heavy iron door creaked open.

I didn’t bother to look at the person. I could already tell from the scent.

Then came a familiar voice, surprised and sharp.

"Father?"

I turned my head slightly. Theo stood in the doorway, holding a tray of food. His eyes widened when he saw me. Behind him was Alaric, wrapped in fresh bandages across his chest. He looked just as stunned.

"You’re back..." Alaric muttered. "You’re fully back."

They both looked at me like I had risen from the grave. I sat up slowly, wincing. My muscles screamed in protest, but I didn’t let it show.

"What do you mean?" I rasped, my throat dry as sand. "What happened to me?"

Theo stepped closer, still staring at me like I might collapse any second. "Father, you went feral, and... you killed some of the alpha guests and Betas. You also tried to kill Alaric and me... it was nothing we have seen before. You were stronger and faster than before... and you couldn’t differentiate between friends and foes."

"You mean I lost control completely? And I killed some of our guests?" My expression darkened. I had just created a big problem for myself.

"How long has it been?"

"Four days." Alaric stood right outside the cell.

"And the rest of the guests?"

"They are mad at you... but also terrified of you."
