Chapter 157: Chapter 157 The Past (6) (Bonus)
"Ethan..." I whispered. My hands trembled by my side. I howled painfully, as I rewatched the horror.
My hatred towards the witches and the other creatures intensified. Tears streamed down my cheeks.
The battlefield had become scanty as only a few creatures were still up and fighting.
My younger self came running back into camp in his wolf form, his furs were soaked in blood. He howled in pain from a distance, as he had felt the mate bond with his father broken.
His eyes widened in horror, he transformed into his human form, and knelt beside Ethan and tried to shake him awake.
"Stay with me," my younger self said with a shaking voice. "Don’t you dare die."
Ethan groaned. "She’s still in the tent," he whispered. "Emelia’s helping my mate... promise me, Damon... promise me you’ll take care of her."
"No... survive and take care of her yourself."
"Damon... please... this is my last request." Ethan held his face with his bloodied hand.
"I promise," my younger self choked.
Hearing his promise, Ethan’s eyes fluttered close, and his hands fell from Damon’s face to the ground.
HOWL.
The fires burned low now, casting long shadows over the bodies that littered the ground. Smoke drifted in the air, and the cries of the dying had grown quiet.
My younger self stood frozen beside Ethan’s body for a long time. Blood stained his hands, his chest, and his face. His chest heaved with short, shallow breaths, and he stayed by his brother’s side completely dazed.
He could not bring himself to accept that his family was finally gone.
And then... he remembered her.
"Emelia..." he breathed out.
He laid his brother down gently. "I’ll come for you," he muttered before he turned and ran, his legs barely keeping up with his panic.
He pushed past the wreckage, dodging fallen weapons and shattered tents. The scent of burning cloth, scorched earth, and blood clung to the air. His voice cracked as he shouted her name, again and again, but no one answered.
When he reached the place where her tent had been, he stopped in his tracks.
The tent was completely destroyed.
He dropped to his knees, clawing through the ash and debris with shaking hands. But she wasn’t there, not even a trace of her scent remained.
Panic gripped him... it was only because he hadn’t felt the bond snap, that he was still insane and normal.
Then he caught a faint scent that belonged to Emelia in the air.
He followed it, running with everything he had. His heartbeat beat loudly in his ears as he climbed the hill toward the sacred tree.
The same tree that the fae princess had tried to save. Its golden bark still pulsed dimly under the moonlight, but something about it felt... heavier now. As if it were mourning too but it was getting better than before.
That was when he saw Ethan’s mate sitting beneath the tree, her back leaning against its roots. Her face was pale, and her lips were pale too. Her eyes were shut close, her colour was still warm, which meant it wasn’t long before she was gone.
Her hands were wrapped around a newborn baby. A baby boy, squirming and crying softly in her arms.
But blood soaked her dress, pouring from her stomach in steady waves, her insides were torn open.
My younger self’s breath came out shakily. He could not believe his brother’s mate he was supposed to protect was already dead.
"No, no, no. This can’t be happening.’
And then, his eyes flicked to the figure just beside her...
My breath caught in my chest.
Emelia.
She lay there on her side, curled protectively around a still, bloodied cloth. Her brown hair was matted with blood. Her hands rested near the child beside her... a tiny baby boy who wasn’t crying or moving.
Her stomach had been torn open just like Ethan’s mate.
I watched my younger self drop to his knees beside her. He reached out with trembling fingers, brushing her hair from her face. His lips parted like he wanted to say something... but nothing came out. The words wouldn’t form. His hand lingered on her cheek, but it was already cold.
"I’m sorry..." his voice cracked.
The thing he had dreaded the most happened. The mate bond between them snapped. His mate was gone, and so was his child.
A deep agonising howl tore from his throat. Hot tears were streaming down his face.
"NOOOOOO!" His cry tore through the air.
"PLEASE DON’T... PLEASE!"
"I’m sorry I wasn’t there when you needed me the most... I’m sorry I came too late... I’m sorry I broke my promise to see you this morning... I’m sorry Emelia... Please come back. STAY WITH ME! PLEASE!" Young Damon wailed.
"Don’t punish me like this... I can’t live without you... I won’t live without you. So please... please... please. Open your eyes... WAKE UP EMELIA!"
But he got no response, except the baby boy’s cries that broke in waves again. Ethan’s son... the only one who’d survived. The rest... were gone.
His brother. His son. And Emelia.
The woman who once carried his future now lay motionless beside it.
He bowed his head, cradling her and his baby close. Blood soaked into his skin, but he didn’t care. He just held them like that... rocking her gently, as if she might wake up if he stayed still enough.
But she never did. Tears streamed down from the corners of his eyes.
And the hill was silent again, except for the soft cries of a child too new to understand the cost of his first breath.
"I’ll find who did this. And I will rip their throat out..."
Before he could finish his words the fae princess came from behind the tree. Her eyes were swollen, her clothes and wings were stained with blood. She held a small dagger dripping with blood.
My younger self stiffened the moment his eyes fell on her. A deep ferocious growl rumbled from his chest. He bolted to his feet.
His eyes ran over the fae princess before settling on the dagger in her hands.
"Did you do this?" His voice was low and calm, but it was only calm before a storm.
The fae princess let go of the dagger, before holding her hand to her chest.
"I’m sorry, it was... it was the only way," she muttered under her breath.
