Chapter 679: Chapter 679: The Only Chance to Escape

Gu Fan continued to ponder, and the longer he contemplated, the more anxious Lisa grew.

"If this island is a secret base, then sinking it in the sea would make it hard for people to discover. Keeping it mobile would make it even harder to find. When it emerges, using fog for camouflage is intended to prevent anyone from finding it. Choosing to surface on gloomy nights matches the conditions under which fog occurs, making it seem reasonable. But what’s strange is that if it’s a secret base, why does it need to surface? To breathe fresh air? I don’t believe that the ancient Super Civilization lacked an air circulation purification system," Gu Fan said, all the while gazing at Lisa, whose expression became increasingly unnatural.

Su Hui caught on, "So Gu Fan, you mean, the island doesn’t need to float above the sea surface, it can remain submerged. But for convenience, Lisa manipulates it to surface under gloomy conditions and release the fog."

"Exactly, the island doesn’t float above the sea for Lisa to act, but Lisa controls the island to float above the sea when she needs to act. Lisa, you know the control room and how to control this island, don’t you?" Gu Fan questioned, putting pressure on Lisa.

"What are you blabbering on about? I don’t understand a word," Lisa retorted, turning away from Gu Fan. The fleeting look of panic in her eyes, however, did not escape Su Hui’s notice.

Gu Fan proceeded, "Lisa, you also know that the situation isn’t in any of our favors right now. You want to survive, and so do I. Everyone wants to survive, so we have to cooperate. You must tell me everything you know."

Lisa scoffed, "Tell you everything I know and then have your companions come in, won’t that eliminate my footing here?"

Hearing this, Gu Fan understood that he was pushing Lisa too hard, but Su Hui casually replied, "Well, say nothing, then. When the Wandering Sea Ghosts break in, you won’t even be able to survive, let alone find a place to stand."

"Well..." Lisa gritted her teeth in silence, clearly hesitating.

"We’re running out of time, Lisa. You still don’t trust me? At this point, I’m the only one who can help you," Gu Fan urged.

"Okay, I will tell you what I know." Under the pressing circumstances, Lisa’s defenses had finally been breached. She responded with a resigned expression. "Gu Fan, you’re right. There is a control room for this secret base that allows the island to float above the sea. Whenever there is a dismal night, I manipulate the island to surface and release fog. Apart from facilitating our operations, it’s also to obscure the existence of the island. I choose gloomy nights because the appearance of fog is more plausible under these conditions."

"As for that large wooden ship, it does indeed need to return to this island regularly to recharge, which is why we, the Wandering Sea Ghosts, never leave. This ship allows us to venture out and capture people, then it transports them underwater." As Lisa spoke, it was clear she was becoming increasingly reluctant; perhaps the most important part of her confession was yet to come.

Gu Fan and Su Hui didn’t hurry her, but watched expectantly, eager for more information.

After taking a deep breath, Lisa continued, "There are two ways to escape. The first is to go through the passage leading to the large wooden ship and leave by boat. The second way is to go to the control room and make the island float above the sea, but if you run, what will happen to me?"

Su Hui understood Lisa’s concerns and replied, "If the island were to float above the sea, we’d still be trapped on it and wouldn’t be able to escape. If we go after the ship, you can escape with us on the same boat."

"And what after we escape?" Lisa responded in disbelief, "You are more numerous and powerful. Seizing the ship from me would be easy, and I could even be destroyed completely."

"I promise that after we return, I will give you the boat back. I will also help you deal with the other Wandering Sea Ghosts so you can remain the sole owner of this place." Gu Fan firmly made a vow yet Lisa still didn’t seem to trust him.

Su Hui rubbed her temples, "Our biggest problem right now, in addition to trust, is how to seize the ship. If we don’t know the weaknesses of the Wandering Sea Ghosts, none of us can get away."

"You want me to tell you the weaknesses of the Wandering Sea Ghosts?" Lisa’s brow furrowed. This was too demanding for her; it was as if she was being asked to reveal her own weaknesses.

After some thought, Gu Fan concluded, "In that case, regardless of whether it’s under daylight or any type of weather, once the Wandering Sea Ghosts materialize, they can leave the sea. However, those who are immaterial can only leave the sea using the large wooden ship."

Lisa nodded, "Yes, once we materialize, we aren’t restricted by day or night. We choose to venture out under gloomy conditions to hide our tracks."

Gu Fan asked another question, "If you can leave the sea when you materialize, why can’t you land on the island?"

"We can land on the island, but it’s easy to get lost on an unfamiliar island and difficult to find the way again. If we waste too much time on an island, we might not make it back to the ship in time and risk vanishing, so it’s too risky. Therefore, we usually don’t land. Moreover, if we scare off the pirates by landing on the island, where will we capture people afterwards?" Lisa’s explanation finally made Gu Fan and Su Hui understand. Their expressions fell, realizing the situation wasn’t as intricate as they had first presumed.

Lisa became slightly irritated, "Come on, telling you as much as I did is already a big deal. Even if you aren’t grateful, you don’t need to look so dejected."

The next question was, Gu Fan stared at Lisa, questioning word by word, "There must be some device on that large wooden ship, that allows all Wandering Sea Ghosts—even immaterial ones—to immediately leave the water and get some fresh air, right?"

Lisa nodded, "Yes, once the large wooden ship rushes to the sea surface, pressing that device will force the dematerialized Wandering Sea Ghosts to vanish. Then, we only have to deal with the materialized Wandering Sea Ghosts. However, I feel that our chances of seizing the ship are slim..."

"Yes, it’s not easy, but that doesn’t mean we can’t succeed." Having said that, Gu Fan’s mouth curled into a smile, "Thank you for trusting us and telling us so much. Now, I have a plan and I need your cooperation."

"A plan, finally. I’ve been waiting to hear this." Su Hui seemed invigorated, looking as though she had been waiting for their counterattack for a long time.
