Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared
Chapter 678: Lisa’s Secret

Chapter 678: Chapter 678: Lisa’s Secret

"Hang in there, both of you! Once I dematerialize, I’ll be able to pass through the walls and escape. You guys are saving me yet again. Good deeds done by good people, I won’t forget you." Lisa’s words were slightly bitter. Anyone could see that Gu Fan and Su Hui probably wouldn’t last much longer.

With the door on the brink of being knocked down, the enemies outside stopped their onslaught as if they too were tired.

Lisa guessed this was because several of the Wandering Sea Ghosts had exhausted their Qi, losing their ability to materialize and thereby reducing the force of their attacks.

"Oh God, finally we can catch our breath." No sooner had Gu Fan finished speaking when Lisa cut in with a pessimistic remark. "Don’t celebrate too soon. They’ll go absorb some Qi and be back soon, and then you’ll really be unable to escape."

Irritated, Su Hui retorted, "Lisa, we’ve saved you multiple times. Can’t you say something positive, for once?"

Lisa just shrugged in a helpless manner, "I’m sorry, I wish I could say something to boost your morale, but I can’t because there is really no hope."

Both Gu Fan and Su Hui displayed expressions that suggested they couldn’t care less about what Lisa said, making her feel somewhat embarrassed. "Okay, since you guys saved me so many times, I’ll tell you a secret about this place."

Upon hearing this, Gu Fan and Su Hui perked up, immediately lending their full attention.

Lisa continued, "Haven’t you wondered? We, the Wandering Sea Ghosts who cannot disembark on land, can set foot on this island?"

Gu Fan frowned, "I did wonder if this island has some special function that protects you Wandering Sea Ghosts."

"That’s not it. This island, to be precise, is not a natural formation, but a man-made one, or to be more accurate, a mobile secret base." Lisa’s words sparked interest in both Gu Fan and Su Hui.

Gu Fan posed a query, "So that’s why this island differs from the rest. It can sink to the sea floor, rise to the surface, and even move. However, even if this island isn’t naturally formed, it should still restrict you all unless there’s some equipment protecting you Wandering Sea Ghosts here, and the same equipment is on that large wooden ship. Therefore, your activities are limited to the large wooden ship, this artificial island, and underwater..." Halfway through his sentence, a sudden thought struck Gu Fan, and he stared hard at Lisa.

Lisa avoided Gu Fan’s gaze and did not answer his question, raising his suspicions.

Gu Fan continued, "The Wandering Sea Ghosts can only go to the sea surface during the foggy nights when there is no fog, and the island would automatically rise to the surface. Is there a connection here?"

As if awakened, Su Hui chimed in, "Yeah? Your departure from the sea and the island’s surfacing coincide. It’s not that you’re afraid of natural light, but that you can only leave for the sea surface when the island surfaces."

Gu Fan asked another question, "Why do you Wandering Sea Ghosts insist on returning here? What’s so good about this place? You can all go further away from this island. You could be free in the sea, wait for the foggy nights to go to the sea surface, but why do you all return here every single time?"

Exasperated, Lisa retorted, "Could you guys stop with the unfounded assumptions?"

"No there’s definitely something off. Isn’t it strange that so many Wandering Sea Ghosts have not dispersed and gone their separate ways, but instead, all return to this island?" Gu Fan studied Lisa with narrowed eyes until she began to look uncomfortable.

Gu Fan hypothesized, "If I were a Wandering Sea Ghost, I wouldn’t want to be part of your group – I would act on my own. The fact that so many Wandering Sea Ghosts haven’t left the group and have all returned to this island together doesn’t make sense at all. But why would that be? What can this island offer you, the Wandering Sea Ghosts?"

After some contemplation, Gu Fan had an epiphany, "It’s that large wooden ship. If I were a Wandering Sea Ghost, even if I broke away from the group and was free in the sea but couldn’t draw upon the Qi of a living being, I wouldn’t be able to materialize. Even if it was a foggy night, I wouldn’t be able to go to the surface, unless I relied on that large wooden ship."

Su Hui chimed in, "According to Gu Fan’s experience with you, you always return to this island after one night out, you never stay elsewhere for an extended period of time. Isn’t that strange? I’m guessing it’s not the large wooden ship coming to replenish its energy, but rather you needing to recharge. But I lean towards the former; I think the large wooden ship can safely take you to the surface during the foggy weather."

"The large wooden ship must have some special equipment that can transport you to the sea surface, and this equipment needs an energy supply. That’s why you go out and return on the same night." After Gu Fan said this, Lisa’s face was noticeably unsettled.

Lisa cringed, her eyes full of indignance, "You’re right, only during those foggy nights does the island surface, although I have no idea why. Our materialized Wandering Sea Ghosts can reach the sea surface, and dematerialized ones can only do so with the help of that large wooden ship. However, we still can’t land on the island but can only board any passing vessels. As for that large wooden ship, it really does need to return home in time to replenish its energy from this island."

Gu Fan pondered, "The next question then is, why would these Wandering Sea Ghosts tie you to the stake? It seems like they want to take you to the surface during the day and turn you to ashes. But how would they accomplish that given that this island is now submerged in the sea? To do this, there needs to be a pathway to ship you out."

Upon hearing this, Su Hui’s eyes lit up. It felt like Gu Fan had hit the nail on the head.

Lisa nodded, "There is indeed such a pathway, which leads to where the large wooden ship is docked."

With a pathway to potentially leave, Gu Fan felt a tinge of excitement as he rekindled his hope of going home.

However, snatching the vessel from the Wandering Sea Ghosts would be extremely difficult and risky.

"It’s odd. Why can you board any ship but not land on the island during foggy nights? What’s the difference?" Gu Fan pondered, feeling if he could get to the root of the matter, he could find the Wandering Sea Ghosts’ weakness and escape from here.
