Chapter 615: Chapter 615: Saving People is Important

Gu Fan agreed to help, not for any other reason, but merely because the man was Jie’s elder brother; Jie would not want anything bad to happen to him.

Hai’s subordinates were thrilled and extremely grateful towards Gu Fan to the point they were preparing to give him a big, heartfelt hug.

Gu Fan quickly added, "Don’t thank me yet. We may not be able to help. Let’s see Hai first."

"Alright, follow me!" one of Hai’s subordinates showed the way. Gu Fan called over Su Hui, Lin Xi, and Jie, and they followed Hai’s subordinate into the woods, eventually winding up in a mountain cave.

The boss’s men were scattered about lethargically, devoid of any spark of life. It seemed that the recent defeat had dealt them a serious blow.

With the departure of the boss, Hai’s unconscious state, and Leng Le’s subsequent seizure, all their significant figures were gone. They found it hard to muster any spirit.

The sight of Gu Fan, Su Hui, Lin Xi, and Jie coming in left the boss’s men stunned. They hadn’t expected to see these individuals at all. Then came the realization that they were standing on opposite sides, which only heightened their tension.

"Everyone, don’t panic. They’re here to help save Brother Hai," someone explained, but the boss’s men were full of skepticism. The idea that their enemies could be so benevolent was hard to swallow.

Jie was impatient, quickly asking, "How is my brother? Where is he now?"

Some of the men there knew about Hai and Jie’s relationship and believed they could trust Gu Fan, Jie, Su Hui, and Lin Xi this one time. After a collective agreement, they allowed Gu Fan and the others into the cave.

With a rush of intensity, Jie quickened his pace, sprinting over. As soon as he entered the cave and saw Hai lying there unconscious and pale, he had no idea what to do next.

"How is Hai now?" Gu Fan inquired immediately. He received a quick response that Hai’s condition was worsening day by day, and they feared he might not make it through the night.

Upon hearing this horrific news, Jie rushed to Hai’s side, his arm brushing against Hai, "Bro, how are you holding up? Bro, don’t scare me."

Hai was hanging on by a thread, unable to respond to Jie’s frantic questions.

After several wails to no response, Jie turned to Lin Xi with pleading eyes. Lin Xi, too, seemed to lack confidence, her expression portraying a desperate attempt to be of help.

Lin Xi formed a seal with both hands and started to channel her supernatural power into Hai’s body, using magic to heal his wounds.

Within five minutes, Hai looked noticeably better; his breathing was smoother. After another five minutes, he had miraculously transitioned from being at death’s door to having a fighting chance. Everyone witnessed this miracle unfold.

But the process had not been easy for Lin Xi. Having expended so much supernatural power, she was breaking out in sweat. Unable to hold on any longer, she took a short break, "Heavens! Hai is severely injured. We’re lucky we arrived just in time. If we’d been late, not even a Sage Daluo could have saved him."

Relieved to see that Hai was out of immediate danger, Jie endlessly thanked Lin Xi for her kind gesture.

"I hope I didn’t just save an enemy," said Lin Xi. She swept her eyes around the cave, her piercing gaze landing on the boss’s men. The message was clear: don’t think I just exerted myself so now you have a chance. It won’t work.

These people were followers of the boss, already intimidated by his formidable strength and invincible persona. Now, witnessing Lin Xi’s power in person, they were reminded of their fear of people like their boss and Lin Xi, those with special abilities.

With one look, Su Hui could tell that these men were paralyzed with fear and wouldn’t dare cause any trouble at this moment.

"Alright, Hai will need some rest before he wakes up. There’s no need to worry. This place is packed; let’s go outside for some fresh air," said Lin Xi, being the first to leave. After a final glance at the unconscious Hai, Gu Fan and Su Hui followed Lin Xi’s lead.

Jie wanted to stay back and take care of Hai, but he also felt it would be awkward to do so. How were the two brothers supposed to face each other when Hai woke up?

Upon weighing the situation, Jie decided it would be best to avoid the looming awkwardness. He left the cave as well and saw Gu Fan, Su Hui, and Lin Xi engaged in a conversation.

Upon seeing Jie, Gu Fan curiously asked, "Why did you leave, Jie? Don’t you want to stay and take care of your brother?"

"Now that he’s out of danger, there’s nothing for me to worry about. Besides, he doesn’t need me to take care of him." After speaking, Jie looked forlorn. He was still struggling to cope with the fact that his elder brother, whom he idolized, had turned out to be the boss’s lackey.

Gu Fan tried to reassure him, "Don’t overthink it. Maybe your brother had his reasons?"

"I hope that’s the case. But what possible reasons could there be?" asked Jie, perplexed and unsure of how to handle the situation.

Then Su Hui chimed in, "There’s nothing we can do about it. We all have to work for someone. What does it matter whom we work for?"

Jie shook his head upon hearing this, "Sister Su, you don’t need to comfort me. If we all have to work for someone, why choose the boss? The boss has hurt so many people and has blood on his hands. As one of the boss’s men, can my brother insulate himself from all of this? I always thought my brother was a good man, someone I could look up to. But what now?"

Observing Jie’s saddened expression, Gu Fan found it hard to empathize as he had never had to face the reality that someone he deeply admired wasn’t as they seemed.

Jie continued, "In my heart, my brother is an upright man, a man of steel, someone who would never oppress the weak. Even when faced with a devil like the boss and faced with danger, he wouldn’t back down. He wouldn’t be forced into doing unjust things because he feared death."

This got Gu Fan thinking: had Hai been too good, too convincing, managing to conceal his true identity and causing Jie to idolize him? Or had Jie conjured up an ideal image of a brother, projecting it onto Hai to the point where he was unable to see the real Hai?

Upon this thought, Gu Fan was relieved that he had always acted genuinely around Gu Ling, which had prevented Gu Ling from projecting an ideal image of a brother onto him.

Just as they were about to console Jie again, they heard a sigh from behind, "I’m sorry I let you down. It was my fault."
