Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared -
Chapter 290: Escaping a Calamity
Chapter 290: Chapter 290: Escaping a Calamity
The large black bear caught its prey and opened its maw, biting into the flesh of the leading wolf and causing agonizing pain.
The surrounding wolves, seeing their leader attacked, rushed to its aid. Ignoring their disadvantage in strength, they fearlessly bit into the bear. However, a single roar from the bear was enough to send the wolves scampering in fear.
The wolf pack, not abandoning their leader, launched another attack. Some attacked the bear from the left, others from the behind, leaving the bear with enemies on all sides. The bear could no longer concentrate its strength against Gu Fan and the leading wolf.
Gu Fan firmly held onto the leading wolf, rolling in the snow. As long as he held onto the leader, the wolves would come to save it. It was survival at any cost.
The bear, seeing its prey roll away, immediately pinned it down. Feeling a bite on its back, the bear was instantly filled with fury. Turning around, it roared, startling the attacking wolf, which quickly fled.
At this moment, Gu Fan was wrestling with the leading wolf, while the bear was ready to attack them at any time. Meanwhile, more than a dozen wolves kept circling the bear, waiting for the right moment to interfere.
During an almost frantic struggle, the leading wolf managed to escape from Gu Fan’s grip. Just as it was about to run away, Gu Fan catches one of its legs: "Don’t run! How nice it would be to stay with me."
The leading wolf was desperate and tried to bite Gu Fan’s hand, while at the same time, the bear lunged, aiming to bite Gu Fan’s body.
Seeing the bear’s attack, Gu Fan hurriedly leaned backward on the ground, enduring the pain of the wolf’s biting while tightly holding onto the wolf’s leg, using it as a shield, he shoved it into the bear’s mouth: "Mr. Black Bear, I’m skinny. There isn’t much meat, but this wolf’s leg is tasty. Please accept my offering."
The bear didn’t discriminate; it bit down hard, causing the leader wolf to wail in agony, prompting more wolves to join the fray, attacking the bear to free their leader.
A dozen wolves bit at the bear, targeting its body, front legs, and back legs. However, the wolves on the receiving end of the bear’s retaliation screamed in pain, their bodies torn apart by the bear’s claws.
With one of its legs injured, the leading wolf was slowed down considerably and became an easy target for the bear. The wolves had no choice but to fight.
Gu Fan took advantage of the ongoing fight to make his escape. However, he was exhausted and barely able to walk. Some wolves kept their eyes on him and to make matters worse, a chunk of his helmet was missing, putting him in a very precarious situation.
At this crucial moment, Su Hui and her group finally found Gu Fan. They scared the wolves away, noticing the wolves and the bear are locked in battle while the leading wolf limped away.
With Su Hui’s exceptional judgement, she understood this was a golden opportunity. Bow in hand, arrow nocked, swiftly let fly, whistling through the air.
The heavy snowstorm distorted Su Hui’s aim. The arrow didn’t hit the lead wolf’s body, instead, it grazed past one leg and wounded another.
Now, both of the leading wolf’s legs were injured, further slowing it down. If the wolf pack can’t hold off the bear, then the leading wolf would become the bear’s dinner tonight.
The bear was terrifying—biting into one wolf, then pinning it to the ground and tearing it to shreds. A mere dozen or so wolves stood no chance against it.
Yet, with the leading wolf’s howl, more wolves began to gather. A dozen, then some twenty of them, and even thirty, they arrived from all directions, launching an attack on the bear in droves.
The wolves had the advantage in numbers against the bear’s strength. Both sides were fighting each other tooth and nail, completely oblivious to the spectators on the side.
At this point, old man Tian finally spoke: "Alright, while they’re busy killing each other, we should hurry on."
Everyone immediately began moving towards the wooden cabin, albeit slowly due to their depleted energy from the intense fight. However, the goal was to distance themselves from the danger.
Gu Fan was injured, and indeed, many others were as well. Thankfully, the injuries were minor and endurable as everyone focused on moving.
"Stay strong, everyone. Once we reach a safe distance, we can rest. Hang in there," the supervisor encouraged, trying to boost the sagging morale. Yet, nobody felt particularly uplifted, they could only move forward against the storm out of sheer will.
After half an hour of strenuous walking, the exhausted group felt as if their legs were about to break. Kang Rong, not typically robust, was on the verge of collapsing.
They had no choice but to stop and rest. Everyone collapsed onto the ground, gasping for breath. Despite their exhaustion, they had to remain alert. Hu Bo, Zhuo Hang, and others still gripped their rifles, carefully observing their surroundings. They have finally escaped from the brink of death and could not afford to be careless.
Jie couldn’t help but praise Lu Yi: "You’re something, Lu Yi! You managed to bring in a bear to help us deal with the wolves. Otherwise, we wouldn’t know what to do."
"I was almost scared to death, okay? It was lucky that the bear saw the wolves first. If it had seen only me, I’d have been doomed." After saying this, Lu Yi bitterly smiled and shook his head, recalling the terrifying ordeal.
Ning Qi chimed in: "You could say that Lu Yi was just lucky."
"If I were lucky, I would’ve never encountered this situation." Lu Yi looked entirely spiritless, as did everyone else, appearing tired and listless.
However, Su Hui was particularly interested in Gu Fan: "Impressive, Gu Fan. You managed to get the wolves and the bear fighting each other. If we had been targeted by either side, it would’ve been a big problem."
Upon hearing this, everyone looked curious wanting to know how Gu Fan was able to do this.
Gu Fan narrated his encounter, candidly admitting it was a huge gamble. If the wolves were too timid to save their leader or if the leading wolf hadn’t impulsively charged forward, and Gu Fan had failed to catch it, he would’ve probably been dead.
After hearing Gu Fan’s explanation, everyone present truly admired his ability to remain calm in a crisis and his courage. Gu Fan’s actions had successfully saved them from a dangerous situation. Hu Bo wondered, if he were in Gu Fan’s place, whether he would have been as successful in turning this threatening situation into a safe one.
"Old man, your helmet really worked." Saying this, Gu Fan tapped the broken helmet on his head, crediting the helmet for saving his life.
Everyone agreed to this wholeheartedly. They all owed their lives to these helmets.
Ning Qi and Hu Bo, who had earlier voiced concern about Gu Fan and his group’s equipment not being suitable for the wilderness, now retracted their words upon reflection. They realised being with Gu Fan and his group actually made them feel safer.
