Chapter 243: Chapter 243: It’s Great to Be Alive

Deep in the night, when all was still, Leng Le sat on the bed, wrapping her arms around her knees, burying her head into her legs, sighing occasionally, and forcing a bitter smile.

After a while, Leng Le raised her head and gazed blankly at the lights outside the window. She observed the beautiful cityscape in the night, staring at her reflection in the window, a reflection of despair. Suddenly, she felt like an alien in this world. Her heart felt suffocated. She poured herself a glass of wine and drank it all in one gulp.

It had been a long time since she had heard from Gu Fan. She suspected the worst... Leng Le knew that it was irreversible and was slowly coming to terms with this reality.

Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Leng Le was perplexed - who could it be so late at night? Could it be the big boss?

Leng Le got up and went to the living room. She opened the door and was shocked beyond words. What on earth was happening?

"I’m sorry. The doctor’s visit took longer than expected, so I am late. You won’t blame me, right?" Gu Fan stood at the door, forcing a few dry laughs. Although he didn’t look completely recovered, his complexion had improved significantly.

"You?" Leng Le was confused. By this time, Gu Fan should have succumbed to the poison. Why was he here, standing perfectly well, and even seemed to be getting better?

Gu Fan entered, his steps unsteady from weakness. He collapsed onto the sofa and started complaining, "It’s the fault of that hospital I went to. They had an intern treating me. He misdiagnosed my condition, which not only resulted in no improvement but made it worse. Fortunately, Sister Su took me to the emergency room today, and that helped me recover somewhat."

"Oh, really." Leng Le wondered. If this was merely an illness, then what about the poison? Even slow-acting poison wouldn’t move this slowly, would it?

Leng Le asked him, "When I left, it seemed like you had a nosebleed."

"I accidentally bumped into someone." Gu Fan looked a bit embarrassed. He was so focused on Lian Shengxiong that he didn’t see the person coming from a side.

"As long as you’re okay." Leng Le quickly sat beside Gu Fan, carefully studying his complexion. He didn’t look like someone on the verge of death anymore, which prompted Leng Le to complain, "What’s wrong with the hospital? How can they let an inexperienced intern treat you! It almost led to a disaster."

In response, Gu Fan shook his head, "It’s okay, I’m much better now. Remember, all doctors start as interns. If we don’t give opportunities to interns, then who will support the medical industry after the old doctors retire? Consider it my small contribution to society."

"You’re really open-minded." Leng Le said, looking at Gu Fan curiously.

Gu Fan was quick to explain, "Trust me. I really went to the doctor with Su Hui. The fact that I’m much better now proves it. Please, don’t overthink."

"The problem is not this. The problem is why my girlfriend took you and not some other woman. Do you understand?" Leng Le pretended to be angry. However, her main confusion was why Gu Fan hadn’t died from poisoning. She had seen him drink the poisoned wine on Liu Yao’s wedding day.

What Leng Le didn’t know was that shortly after she left that day, Gu Fan felt sick and rushed to the restroom to vomit out all the wine he had drunk, thus saving himself.

Gu Fan quickly explained, "I was sick and feeling dizzy. When Sister Su offered to take me to see a doctor, I didn’t think too much. Moreover, you said you had work to do. How could I bother you?" On his way here, Gu Fan had prepared this lie. He knew lying wasn’t good but it was better than letting Leng Le have wild imaginations. He couldn’t let her misunderstand any further.

"Okay, I’ll believe you this time." Leng Le, of course, knew what Gu Fan and Su Hui were up to. But she didn’t expose them. She couldn’t say, "Gu Fan, stop lying. I know you went to investigate the Elite Club."

In conclusion, the woman knew what the man was up to, but pretended to misunderstand.

And the man thought the woman really misunderstood, so he told a lie.

The woman then pretended to believe the man’s lie.

And the man believed that the woman believed his lie.

Then the play continued. This time it was Gu Fan’s turn to be curious, "It’s strange, what were you doing there?"

"Didn’t I tell you I had work? I had arranged to have dinner with a friend and discuss opening a new branch." Leng Le also had her explanation for the coincidental meeting. She couldn’t let Gu Fan think that she had intentionally appeared to hinder his investigation of the Elite Club.

Gu Fan just said, ’oh,’ appearing to believe her, and then asked some questions about the friend and the potential location of the new branch.

As they conversed, Gu Fan suddenly pulled Leng Le into his arms and whispered in her ear, "I’m very tired. I don’t want to leave tonight. Can I stay here?"

Leng Le nodded her head. To be honest, she was surprised and relieved that Gu Fan was okay. As for the trouble that might arise from this, she pushed it to the back of her mind.

That night, both of them fell asleep together. Given Gu Fan’s recently recovered state, he couldn’t do much else, and he slept heavily.

Early next morning, Gu Fan left because he had classes. Leng Le then dialed the big boss’s number.

The big boss was puzzled, "What’s up? Why are you calling me so early in the morning? Did something happen?"

Leng Le gave a faint smile, "There are two things I need to report, and neither of them is good news. Brace yourself, boss. First, Gu Fan probably isn’t going to die. I have no idea what happened. The slow toxins had no effect on him. Second, Gu Fan and Su Hui have discovered the Elite Club. I don’t know how they found out, but they did."

There was a long silence on the other end, eerily quiet, like the calm before a storm. It sent shivers down Leng Le’s spine.

"Fuck..." The big boss rarely swore, "Those bastards are really capable to have found the Elite Club. Are they tired of living? Which of us messed up and what else they know about us!"

Leng Le quickly suggested, "Boss, right now, the priority is to ensure that the Elite Club acts cautiously. All activities should be stopped immediately."

"Okay, I got it. You’ve worked hard, keep an eye on Gu Fan. If necessary, eliminate him immediately." The big boss hung up abruptly, causing Leng Le’s heart to sink.
