Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared
Chapter 244 Special Visit

Chapter 244: Chapter 244 Special Visit

In his final semester of his junior year, his classes were a bit reduced. Today, Gu Fan has only one morning class. After finishing the class, he eagerly returned home to take his medication, then went straight to sleep, hoping to quickly recover.

He was awakened around three in the afternoon by the ring of the doorbell which bothered him greatly. Who could it be? Lu Yi perhaps, who wouldn’t even let him rest.

If it was a door-to-door salesperson, Gu Fan decided that he would give them a beating even if he hadn’t fully recovered. Otherwise, it would hash his chill.

When Gu Fan opened the door, he saw a stern unfamiliar face greeting him with a friendly smile. "Hello, you’re Gu Fan, right? Do you remember me?"

"Apologies, I have no recollection." Gu Fan was a bit taken aback, as the other party seemed to know him.

"When we moved away, you were probably only six years old or so. You were only about this tall," the visitor demonstrated, still smiling.

"May I..." Just as Gu Fan was trying to unravel the person’s identity, the man walked in uninvited, looking around the room with nostalgia and amazement like Luo Jingrong.

The man touched the tabletop, "I didn’t expect you to keep this old table. We two families used to crowd around this table for meals. Do you remember, Gu Fan?"

"Uh... This..." Gu Fan seemed to recall a bit. Memories from his childhood surfaced. Two families living under the same roof, cooking together, eating together, sharing their lives. Then one day, the other family moved out, and completely disappeared from Gu Fan’s life. What Gu Fan remembered most was their daughter, several years older than him.

The visitor handed something over saying, "This is my business card."

When Gu Fan glanced at it, he almost jumped. This was not just any ordinary business card, it belonged to Liu Zhendong, a high official managing the city, and also Liu Yao’s father according to Su Hui.

Gu Fan naturally could not have imagined that the Liu family was also one of the households that had moved out. Their departure allowed Gu Fan to fully claim this old house.

"Why did Mr. Liu suddenly decide to visit me? Is this a chance visit to reminisce about the old days?" Gu Fan questioned. At this, Liu Zhendong faltered for a moment, then gave a little laugh. Indeed, that was the excuse Liu Zhendong had come up with prior to the visit. Gu Fan voicing it out made the atmosphere a bit tricky.

"Where’s your father? We grew up together and I witnessed him fall in love, get married, and have a child. Although we have been busy with our individual lives these years, I never forgot our friendship." Liu Zhendong portrayed a sincere attitude, looking genuinely like someone who had come to find an old friend, almost convincing Gu Fan.

With no choice, Gu Fan responded, "My parents have been working abroad for a long time and seldom return home. My sister is also studying abroad. At present, I am the only one who is living in this city."

"Oh, I see. It seems I wasted my trip. However, it doesn’t matter. You can give my card to your father and let him contact me when he returns. I promise I will make time for him in spite of my busy schedule." Liu Zhendong spoke earnestly and Gu Fan nodded in agreement, "Rest assured, I will give your card to my father as soon as he returns. To ensure I won’t forget about this, I’ll place your card somewhere noticeable."

"Alright then, I am counting on you." Having said this, Liu Zhendong gave Gu Fan’s shoulder a pat, seemingly full of implications, making Gu Fan feel uneasy.

As if he suddenly thought of something, Liu Zhendong asked, "You do remember my daughter, right? When you were young, you two used to play together, and she often bullied you."

"Well, she was older than me." Gu Fan laughed awkwardly and asked, "Just to clarify, is your daughter Liu Yao?"

Liu Zhendong slightly startled, then nodded, "Yes, how do you know that?"

Gu Fan continued, "My girlfriend is good friends with your daughter. I also had a glass of champagne at her wedding."

Liu Zhendong was momentarily stunned before bursting into laughter. "It seems we indeed share quite a connection. We families were quite close and even intended to arrange a marriage for you two. But, following our relocation, our communication dwindled, and the arranged marriage was called off."

"Arranged marriage?" Gu Fan was a bit surprised.

Liu Zhendong nodded, "Yes, if both families had kept in touch, Liu Yao might have become your wife. Now, you drank champagne at her wedding. This must be fate."

"Yes, the arrangement of destiny." Gu Fan scratched his ears and cheeks, and found this all too surreal; his girlfriend’s best friend was his once-fiancée. If the girls heard, their jaws would drop.

"Alright, don’t think about it too much. It was just some fun arranged marriage prepared by our fathers." Liu Zhendong waved it off nonchalantly.

Gu Fan gave an awkward laugh, "Lucky for Liu Yao she didn’t marry me, otherwise she would have been delayed. She found a more suitable place."

"Young man, why would you say so? I think you are very promising. Our families have a deep connection. When you enter society, if you encounter any problems, I, Uncle Liu, will certainly assist you. I cannot make absolute promises, but in this city, I can definitely be of help." When Liu Zhendong said this, he seemed genuinely concerned for Gu Fan, which made Gu Fan feel as if he had found a long-lost relative.

Nevertheless, Gu Fan knew this was not a long-lost relative. He thought it was rather suspicious that the other party was so enthusiastic, so friendly. Was the good fortune coming too fast and too unexpected?

Gu Fan was on alert, he had heard from Su Hui about Liu Yao’s situation. Perhaps Liu Yao had seen something she shouldn’t have and hence, not long into her marriage, quit her well-paying job and was sent abroad. The official claim was that she was to continue her studies. However, she and Yuan Cheng had just recently got married, it was highly irrational.

Su Hui and Zhuo Hang had never ceased to investigate Liu Yao’s case, and now that Liu Zhendong had shown up at the door playing the emotional card, it did not seem normal. Gu Fan knew from Liu Zhendong’s hopeful expression the purpose of his visit.

"I should be cautious." Gu Fan reminded himself. He was not dealing with a simple person.
