Chapter 1423: Chapter 1423 Another Batch of Free Kills
An hour had passed when Gu Fan and Li returned to the site of the incident, found several corpses on the ground, and retrieved the communication devices.
Gu Fan inserted a communication device, similar to a Bluetooth headset, into his ear and found it suitable; however, he glanced nervously at Li.
"Okay, we’ve got the communication devices, so what do we do now?" Li had barely finished speaking when he saw Gu Fan make a gesture to be silent, signaling him to check whether his own device was turned off.
After checking each other’s devices, they found they were indeed off and breathed a sigh of relief.
To determine the current situation, Gu Fan and Li each picked up different communication devices, one from the West Nobles and one from the East Nobles.
Gu Fan and Li confirmed the gestures: a fist meant the communication device was off, and they could then talk; an open hand meant the device was on, and they would stop speaking.
Li liked these gestures and quickly made a fist, as if he had something important to say with that hopeful look.
Gu Fan also responded with a fist and then saw Li with a gloomy expression: "Shall we get some more food? I’m hungry."
"This..." Gu Fan thought it made sense, so they started looking for food.
Their frantic running had caused them to lose a lot of things, including food and water, which now became an urgent issue for Gu Fan and Li to solve.
Fortunately, after the squad members were killed, the food and water they carried were not taken and were enough to sustain Gu Fan and Li for several days.
Li was puzzled: "Strange, the attackers didn’t take the food and water, don’t they eat or drink?"
Gu Fan replied, "Have you ever seen a vampire in need of food and water?"
Hearing this, Li became even more confused: "What do you mean, the attackers are vampires? But you said earlier it wasn’t a vampire."
Of course, Gu Fan wouldn’t tell Li that the creature that had burst out just now was even more ferocious and terrifying than a vampire.
Seeing Gu Fan refused to say more, Li asked again, "So what do we do now?"
"Wait!" Gu Fan said and opened his hand, then turned on the communication device to listen to the information inside.
The communication channels of the East Nobles and West Nobles were different; Gu Fan was now listening to the West Nobles. After losing three regular squads and a vampire squad, the West Nobles decided not to divide their troops for the search, to avoid being defeated piecemeal.
Li also opened his hand and turned on the device, now listening to how the East Nobles were deploying their forces.
As time ticked by, no useful information emerged, only some reports of search progress with no discoveries, just continuing to move in a certain direction and the like.
Just as Gu Fan was getting disappointed, he heard someone shout, "We’re about to reach the location where Squad Five got into trouble."
"Damn!" Gu Fan thought the enemy might have gone far but hadn’t expected Organization X to send more people.
Just as Gu Fan and Li were thinking of running, ten vampires jumped down from the treetops and landed in front of them.
The unfriendly faces and questioning eyes of the vampires terrified Li, who involuntarily stepped back.
Gu Fan, in a moment of desperation, said, "You’re vampires, thank goodness, we’re saved."
The vampires recognized Gu Fan and Li’s uniforms as their own and asked, "What exactly happened here?"
Gu Fan quickly recounted what had happened, about a formidable individual who had suddenly appeared and effortlessly killed an entire vampire squad, and then pursued their regular soldiers. If it weren’t for everyone scattering, things might have been much worse...
The vampires frowned tightly, even a bit incredulous: "Is there really someone that strong? Did you see his face clearly?"
To that, Gu Fan and Li shook their heads, claiming that the opponent was too fast, even faster than vampires, and they couldn’t see clearly.
One vampire mocked, "Most of you have been eliminated, yet you two are unharmed; it seems you ran very timely."
A sinking feeling hit Li, sensing that the vampire’s words implied they were being accused of cowardice.
Gu Fan quickly explained that they indeed followed the squad leader’s orders to scatter and flee. If the vampires weren’t convinced, they could look around; surely there were bodies of other squad members scattered around, and there was a slight distance between where Squad Five had trouble and where the vampire squad was taken down.
Following Gu Fan’s suggestion, the vampires sent several members to scout around and found it was true.
The bodies of the previous nine vampires were found five hundred meters away, indicating that after the vampire squad was defeated, Squad Three had fled here, thus deeming their actions as cowardice.
One vampire snorted coldly, "We vampires fight bravely; even in death, we don’t flee. And yet you ran."
Li, with a pained expression, said, "If even vampires can’t win, how could we possibly do so?"
Gu Fan immediately explained, "It was the vampires who ran first, then we did. Look over there, there’s a body of a vampire."
Hearing that, several vampire’s faces darkened instantly, and their murderous looks intensified.
Suddenly, a vampire loudly questioned, "Nine out of ten vampires fought until the last moment, only one vampire fled, and the entirety of Squad Three ran; what do you call that?"
Another vampire added, "If the vampire who fled is still alive, we’ll punish him severely. As for you two, we’re going to be even harsher."
Gu Fan put on a pleading face, "My vampire brethren, with such a formidable enemy at hand, this isn’t the time to pursue us. Let’s wait until we’re back to discuss it."
The vampires sneered, "Don’t think you can wait until the battle is heavily costly, with few survivors returning, and then no one will investigate your acts of cowardice."
"That’s not what’s happening," Gu Fan said, a bit nervous as his thoughts were seen through, and the vampires appeared unrelenting.
Gu Fan wondered if he should take out these vampires before they had a chance to report the descriptions of him and Li, while the higher-ups were still too preoccupied to pay attention to this matter.
At that moment, a vampire asked, "What are your names? Show us your IDs."
Hearing this, Gu Fan’s heart skipped a beat; if they handed over their IDs honestly, it would confirm to Organization X their acts of cowardice, and even if they survived and returned, the organization would send someone to pursue the matter.
