Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared -
Chapter 1422: Becoming Deserters Together
Chapter 1422: Chapter 1422: Becoming Deserters Together
The squad leader ran at the forefront when suddenly a vampire fell from the sky, landing heavily in front of him.
The squad leader, frightened by this unexpected scene, quickly stopped in his tracks and then took a clear look—it was the vampire who had lectured them before.
That vampire was only severely wounded, with no wooden stake in his heart, but he was very weak. He stretched out a hand to the squad leader, looking pitifully as if begging for help.
"This..." The squad leader slowly reached out a hand to help, but fear made him hesitate.
Someone jumped down directly, stepping on the vampire as if trampling on a contemptible ant, completely indifferent.
He stood with his hands behind his back, his gaze filled with dominance. His arrogant demeanor intimidated everyone present, and a murderous look spread out. With a cold sweep of his eyes, no one dared to point their guns at him.
But when Gu Fan saw someone jump down, he immediately dragged Li behind a tree trunk, so he did not see the other person’s face clearly. He didn’t want to see it clearly; he only wanted to escape the battlefield.
The squad leader was very nervous, his body shaking, his voice even more so: "Who are you?"
The man indifferently said, "Who I am isn’t important. What’s important is whether you are willing to work for me."
Hiding behind the tree trunk, Gu Fan heard this indifferent voice and immediately tensed up, thinking to himself, "Damn, even he is here? Things are heating up."
The squad leader tried to maintain his composure: "What do you want us to do?"
"Help me infiltrate Dark City," the man stated. "I promise not to kill you. Otherwise, this will be your fate." After speaking, he crushed the vampire’s body with one stomp.
Everyone watching couldn’t help but feel chilled. If even vampires could only be slaughtered, what about them?
The squad leader hesitated, thinking that if they helped this man get into Dark City and were discovered, Organization X would never let them off the hook. Although the man in front of them was terrifying and brutal, he was not as fearsome as the punishment Organization X had for traitors.
Seeing that the squad leader didn’t agree, the man’s face darkened instantly: "What, you don’t agree because you’re afraid Organization X will hold you accountable? I can tell you now, I can kill all of you right this minute, without leaving one behind."
Hearing this and feeling the terrifying murderous intent, the squad leader, under pressure, gritted his teeth and then, gathering his courage, shouted: "Everyone split up and run, quickly!"
With a swift chop, the man sent the squad leader’s head flying. His attack was ruthlessly fierce, his glance towards life utterly indifferent.
Everyone immediately ran in all different directions, each choosing a different path to increase the chances of escape.
However, the enemy’s speed was incredibly fast, catching up with a simple movement and easily killing those who tried to flee.
Fifty people, fifty escape routes, but alas, two legs were never fast enough. One after another was caught up with and killed before they even had the chance to fire their guns.
Screams echoed, one after another. The enemy’s chase was so fast that it made many people despair.
Although Gu Fan and Li had already run some distance, the screams seemed nearby, as if the enemy could catch up at any moment.
"I have to live and return. Xue is waiting for me; I can’t have anything happen to me." Li ran ahead as fast as he could, surprisingly quicker than Gu Fan.
Gu Fan was somewhat taken aback, thinking to himself whether this was the power of love or the will to survive.
Gu Fan looked back and felt somewhat at a loss. Given the current situation, it was better not to encounter the enemy to avoid trouble.
After running for a while, Li finally couldn’t run anymore and leaned against a tree, gasping for air.
Gu Fan, however, looked nonchalant, as if after running so far, he hadn’t expended any energy at all, which was quite unusual.
"Tai, are you even human?" Li was astonished. He saw too many unknown secrets in this companion and suddenly felt that being with Gu Fan might be even more dangerous.
Gu Fan didn’t mind, merely saying indifferently, "Don’t look at me like that. In fact, I’m also exhausted. It’s just that I’m pretending to be fine."
"You can pretend this as well?" Li didn’t believe such nonsense.
Gu Fan frowned: "Looking at the situation, we seem to be safe for now. But unfortunately, we’ve lost touch with the main force. It’s even uncertain if the main force still exists."
Li shook his head with a pessimistic look: "Our squad has suffered more than half casualties."
"My biggest concern right now is how we’re going to explain when we return," Gu Fan continued, hitting the nail on the head. "We can’t tell Xue Long that we fled back, right?"
Li was terrified, thinking to himself that indeed, with so many dead or injured, and not a hair missing from them, it would be hard to justify. They would surely be deemed deserters.
Gu Fan pondered for a while: "I believe after some time, the higher-ups will try to contact our squad and will find out they can’t reach us. Then they’ll know our squad was attacked."
Li was puzzled: "Yeah, I know that too. What’s your point?"
"But the higher-ups don’t know we’re still alive and won’t think about pursuing us for cowardice. This is our chance." This statement made Li even more confused, prompting him to ask, "What do you mean exactly?"
Gu Fan continued, "Don’t you understand? The battle has just begun, and it will only get more brutal. Few will live to return. We just need to pick the right moment to blend into the retreating troops."
Realizing this, Li had a sudden epiphany: "Right, at the end, with so many casualties, everyone returns to Dark City battered and dirtied; I doubt anyone will notice us deserters."
"Another point is, we now don’t need to follow orders and can operate freely. That means we’re safer and won’t be forced to search for the enemy." Gu Fan’s words made sense, and Li nodded in agreement.
Gu Fan looked back towards the direction they had escaped, his expression turning grim.
"What’s wrong? What are you thinking?" Li asked.
"When we ran just now, we dropped our communication equipment. We need to get some new ones. I need to know our people’s movements. By tracking them, we can deduce the enemy’s movements and avoid disadvantageous situations. That’s why I plan to go back." Gu Fan’s words made Li somewhat scared; it was a huge risk to return after barely escaping.
Yet Gu Fan felt there was no problem. The enemy wouldn’t stay in the same place forever. As time passed, the enemy would surely leave, so although it seemed dangerous to go back, it was actually safe.
Despite his fear, Li could see the logic in Gu Fan’s plan and decided to take the risk and accompany him back.
