Chapter 1409: Chapter 1409 More than One Deserter
After joining the aristocrats from the West in Organization X, even if there were no tasks, Gu Fan still had to report to Catherine’s nightclub and chat with others whenever he had the chance.
Li and Gu Fan sat at the bar drinking when they heard others talking about Xue Yin.
Xue Yin had killed a member of the Xue Clan while escaping, so Organization X could never let her go, and they would hunt her to the ends of the earth.
Gu Fan became interested and inquired which member of the Xue Clan Xue Yin had killed.
Someone replied, "Heard it was a Northern Aristocrat, a lineage passed down by the Xue Wang, and someone the Xue Wang valued highly, so you can imagine how furious the Xue Wang is."
These days, many vampires were killed, but the Xue Clan rarely suffered harm, as they were always well protected.
Another chimed in, "Strange, feels similar to the last incident involving our Western aristocrats. Both were done by female vampires."
"What incident? I’d like to know more," Gu Fan said curiously, instinctively asking but overlooking one detail.
Someone questioned, "Tai, you’ve been in Dark City for several years now. It caused quite a stir, don’t you know?"
Gu Fan’s heart skipped a beat, then he quickly found an excuse, "Back then, everyone was on edge, I didn’t dare to inquire much, just knew it was a big deal related to the Xue Clan."
"Yes, a Xue Clan member fancied a female vampire and tried to force himself on her, but she killed him instead."
Hearing this, Gu Fan kept his expression neutral, pretending not to care much, and he dared not speak carelessly this time.
Another added, "That female vampire, what’s her name? Xue Xue, right? She’s truly beautiful but has a temper. If it were any other female vampire coveted by the Xue Clan, they’d be eager to comply, but she flatly refused, annoying that Xue Clan member."
Gu Fan prodded further, "Yes, if a noble fancied me, I would be so happy."
"They don’t know where Xue Xue has escaped to, haven’t spotted her in all these years. Maybe she’s already been finished off by the Hunter’s Guild."
Gu Fan thought for a moment, then pursued further, "Does anyone know the exact events and details?"
To which, the others shook their heads, "It was also in this nightclub at the time, everyone was busily engaged elsewhere, and that Xue Clan member took Xue Xue into a room. Naturally, we wouldn’t spoil the mood, so we stayed far away."
Then another supplemented, "After a while, we heard screams, and that’s when everybody realized something was terribly wrong and rushed over."
"The moment we walked in, we saw that Xue Clan member lying on the floor, a wooden spike thrust through his heart from behind, his body turned to dead ashes, and there were a few others fallen around trying to help. Xue Xue was gripping someone’s neck and before us, snapped that person’s neck."
"I recall Li was right there, injured, lying on the ground. As more people arrived, she let go of Li and then escaped through the window."
"Yes, back then we called him Lucky Li. Out of the first batch who went to rescue, except for Li, everyone else was killed," they said, looking at the embarrassed Li who then scratched his head.
"I was indeed lucky. If the others had been delayed a bit more, I might have been killed by Xue Xue too."
Gu Fan also thought Li was quite lucky, but something seemed off. A vampire typically could kill a human with a single strike, yet Li only received minor injuries, which meant that at the moment Xue Xue struck, Li either dodged a fatal blow, or...
Gu Fan noticed that whenever Xue Xue was mentioned, Li’s expression became unnatural, as if avoiding something.
When it was time to get off work, Gu Fan walked with Li, chatting casually.
A delivery truck with a deformed front caught Gu Fan and Li’s attention—if guessed correctly, that was the truck smashed by Xue Yin.
Gu Fan took a good look and found it strikingly similar to the one sold to Organization X by Ouyang Jin, meaning this truck’s route passed through the town where Su Hui and Lin Xi lived.
The front of the truck was completely smashed, the engine and other critical parts irreparably damaged, looking like it was to be discarded.
Gu Fan casually asked, "What does Organization X usually do with scrapped vehicles?"
Li nonchalantly answered, "Dump them at the outer landfill—didn’t you know?"
"The landfill?" Gu Fan immediately feigned an indifferent expression, "I just handle the trash, I don’t care where it gets taken."
Li frowned, seeming suspicious.
Gu Fan acted as if nothing was wrong, but his heart raced, fearing his slip of the tongue had exposed his not being Tai.
Indeed, according to the records, Tai had lived in Dark City for several years and was well-versed in many of its affairs. Now, Gu Fan came off like a newcomer.
Neither spoke, both fixating on the wrecked truck. Gu Fan pondered if this truck had delivered goods to Dark City, then whatever special goods it carried might still bear traces.
"Let’s go take a look," Gu Fan suggested, and Li nodded.
Approaching, they saw Organization X members hosing it down, the washed-away blood still visible.
A worker remarked, "Those two guys transporting the goods were so unlucky to encounter such an incident."
Gu Fan pretended to look sympathetic, "Indeed, just when the risks of transporting goods were reducing, they run into an emergency situation."
"Alright, let’s go," Li appeared disinterested.
Gu Fan nodded, but he noticed Li’s somber expression, not out of unhappiness but seemingly something troubling. So Gu Fan approached to chat, "What’s up? You haven’t been much talkative today."
Li gave a bitter smile, "It’s nothing, just that mentioning Xue Xue today brought up some bad memories."
Gu Fan understood—it must have been from that past incident that left a psychological scar on Li.
As Gu Fan was about to offer some comforting words, two men approached and greeted Li. They seemed familiar with Li.
Li mentioned, "These two are my friends, also from Organization X, and they’ve been assigned to be delivery drivers, about to set off."
Gu Fan frowned; he had been planning to start with the delivery drivers and unexpectedly, Li knew two, which felt like divine intervention.
