Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared
Chapter 1408: So This Is Your Home

Chapter 1408: Chapter 1408: So This Is Your Home

The so-called secret base either remains unknown or its residents stay anonymous.

Gu Fan’s priority at the moment was to find a secret base, because this was Dark City, and it was highly unlikely to keep such a place unknown from Organization X, which had every building in Dark City at their fingertips.

But Organization X didn’t know exactly who lived in every building, so Gu Fan had to work with these houses.

Gu Fan knew Organization X kept records of every house’s residents, like the house he was living in now belonged to someone named Tai, and Gu Fan was using Tai’s identity.

To secure a secret residence, one would have to silently dispose of its occupants, but Gu Fan felt an innocent person shouldn’t be harmed, not only just that.

After some investigation, a three-story house caught his attention, located near the city wall, which meant it would be quick to leave Dark City in case of escape.

Another point was that there were no taller buildings around this three-story house, which meant it had a good view, allowing a clear sight of the Tower of Darkness.

Choosing this house as a secret residence was a good idea, but the problem was that Gu Fan found it difficult to be ruthless, what if the other party was a good person? Maybe they were forced into Dark City against their will.

As Gu Fan deliberated, the door suddenly opened, and out ran a familiar face—it was actually Li.

"Tai, I recognized you from the window," Li expressed his surprise and then hospitably said, "Were you looking for me? I was just thinking about visiting you these days."

"Ah, right, I was looking for you," Gu Fan secretly marveled. What a coincidence.

Invited warmly by Li, Gu Fan entered the house and took stock of its simple yet tidy setup, clearly seeing that Li was a diligent person in life.

"Come, have some tea!" In Dark City, where supplies were scarce, good tea was a luxury. Li’s offering to Gu Fan showed the high regard he has for him.

Gu Fan appreciated Li’s gesture. If not for their current opposition, he truly wished to befriend him.

They chatted casually and then steered the conversation towards a recent incident. It was about Xue Yin’s defection, and Organization X had dispatched a large number of people to hunt in the Dark Primitive Mountain woods. During the search, a squad was eliminated, and it was preliminarily estimated that they had encountered Xue Yin.

Hearing this, Gu Fan was stunned for a moment because, according to Xue Yin, after she fled into the Dark Primitive Mountain woods, she left traces to mislead Organization X into thinking she had escaped there, and then she immediately returned to Dark City.

If what Xue Yin said was true, and the squad in the Dark Primitive Mountain woods wasn’t eliminated by Xue Yin, then who did it?

Li shared more information that Gu Fan didn’t know about. On her way out of the Tower of Darkness, Xue Yin encountered several blockades but eliminated them, including a truck.

According to Li, this truck was en route to the Tower of Darkness, almost reaching its destination when Xue Yin jumped down from the tower directly onto the cab’s roof—needless to say, the outcome was likely grim.

Gu Fan furrowed his brows, "That must have been brutal."

To that, Li shook his head, "More than brutal, it was ghastly. It was common for transportation people to be attacked on the Road of Death, with high chances of accidents. Many in Organization X didn’t want to be transporters. Now with those blood-sucking creatures taken out, the Road of Death became much safer. We thought good days were ahead for the truck drivers, but who could have guessed."

"A truck headed to the Tower of Darkness?" Gu Fan feigned surprise, then asked, "Generally, trucks are heading for the transportation center, but those directed at the Tower of Darkness are usually of a higher level of importance."

"Not exactly, it’s just that the cargo they’re carrying is more important," Li took a good look at Gu Fan and then cautiously added, "The treatment of transportation personnel has improved. I am striving for this position, do you want to join me?"

Gu Fan thought about it and found it to be a good idea, so he agreed, but he was a bit concerned, "Requesting this job shift, won’t it be seen as a betrayal to Catherine?"

Li hesitated too, "For me to go is fine, but for you, it seems a bit like you’re avoiding Catherine."

"Yeah, troublesome..." Gu Fan contemplated. If he could secure the truck driver position, he might be able to sneak Su Hui and Lin Xi into the city undetected.

It was at this moment that Gu Fan noticed the meaningful look in Li’s eyes, as if he suspected that Gu Fan had some secret, which made Gu Fan uneasy.

Li then asked, "Last time, Catherine summoned me and left you alone. Did you receive the highest reward from her?"

Gu Fan hurried to explain, "Not at all, it was just a work report."

Li’s expression did not seem entirely convinced, and his smile grew increasingly cunning, making Gu Fan seem as if he really had a secret affair with Catherine.

"Alright, I won’t keep you any longer, I should go now," Gu Fan expressed his unwillingness to stay and really didn’t want to delve further into the topic.

Li added, "There’s one more thing, don’t tell others, I’m not really vying to be a transportation person, Catherine sent me, not for anything else, but for that truck’s most special cargo."

Gu Fan grew curious, "What cargo? So special that it caught Catherine’s attention?"

Li shook his head, "I don’t know, it’s tightly controlled by Organization X. Even the Four Great Nobles can’t touch it. I expect my application to be rejected, but I have a few friends who have a good chance of getting it."

"Good luck then," Gu Fan said, about to leave when he suddenly heard noise upstairs, as if something had broken.

Li looked flustered and quickly explained that it was his cat.

Gu Fan carelessly responded, "Oh, a cat? I thought maybe someone else lived with you. I was about to ask if you were hiding a beauty here."

Li immediately argued, "Hide a beauty? I’ve always lived alone."

Hearing this, Gu Fan secretly rejoiced. If it was true that only Li lived here, it would make an ideal secret residence. Next, he had to figure out how to deal with Li.

After finishing his tea, Gu Fan said his goodbyes and left. As soon as he stepped outside and closed the door, he heard Li hurriedly moving towards the door.
