Chapter 1344: Chapter 1344: The Past of the Ex-Girlfriend

Almost blew his cover, Gu Fan dared not linger outside anymore and quickly returned to his temporary residence to calm his mind.

Gu Fan lamented his terrible luck; his first outing had him bumping into Hai En. Could it be a sign this trip was doomed?

Then Gu Fan remembered the neighbors next door, so he couldn’t help but sneak over to the window and take a peek. Still, the doors and windows were tightly closed, the curtains drawn. He wondered what was the deal with these neighbors, why were they so averse to being seen?

According to the rules, as long as one came from Dark City and passed the scrutiny, they could reside in Dark City and would be assigned dwellings. Why then were these people so secretive?

"Unless you are like me, with unspeakable secrets," Gu Fan started becoming interested in the neighbors next door.

At this time, in the neighboring house, some people were already extremely bored. Moreover, their supplies of food and water were running low, making everybody increasingly irritable.

Just when Leng Le could hardly keep these people under control, the floor suddenly loosened, and then the floorboards were moved aside—the mysterious masked person had returned.

"Sorry for the delay, I ran into some trouble on the way," the mysterious masked person brought several bags of items, all food and water, with some medicines and other supplies, enough to sustain everyone for seven days.

Everyone saw the mysterious masked person return and were instantly dominated by fear again. All resentments dissipated, and they obediently ate and drank in their places.

Leng Le finally breathed a sigh of relief, thankful that the mysterious masked person had returned in time. Otherwise, she truly didn’t know what to do.

The mysterious masked person handed a gold bar to Leng Le and added, "I will have to leave for a while. Remember this when I’m gone, conserve food and water. Don’t waste it. If it’s not enough, take the gold bar and buy more outside, but be prepared. Resources here are really expensive; go out as little as possible."

Leng Le understood. Dark City was indeed dangerous, and her beauty would surely attract attention.

The mysterious masked person casually asked, "Any anomalies recently?"

Leng Le thought for a moment and then answered, "I heard some noise from next door. It seems someone has moved in, but like us, they don’t turn the lights on at night."

"It’s fine, just make sure they don’t see you," the mysterious masked person seemed not to care at all.

Leng Le frowned, thinking the mysterious masked person was taking things too lightly. Shouldn’t they thoroughly check who exactly was living next door?

Seeing the mysterious masked person about to leave again, Leng Le asked, "Can you now tell me what we are supposed to be doing here? Didn’t you say you were going to bring us fortune?"

"Don’t worry, my promise will be fulfilled. If you don’t want to die, and if you want to leave with a fortune, just listen to me," after saying this, the mysterious masked person returned to the tunnel.

What could Leng Le and the others do at this point? They had no choice but to comply.

Many people looked at Leng Le with dry eyes, as if hoping she could stand up and do something.

However, Leng Yue was also constrained, completely in the dark about what the mysterious masked person intended. She felt trapped in a den of thieves with no way out.

So tired, really very tired, Leng Le was exhausted both physically and emotionally, and suddenly thought being just an ordinary person wasn’t so bad after all.

Lying in bed, Leng Le closed her eyes, and scenes of the past emerged one after another—those distressing events that she couldn’t forget even if she wanted to.

At the age of seven, Leng Le grew up in a home devoid of warmth, where the preference for sons over daughters led her parents to care little for her.

After arguing time and again, her parents eventually divorced and started new families of their own; Leng Le became the unwanted one, with neither parent wishing to keep her.

Thus, stifling her grievances, Leng Le lived under the care of her grandparents, and life was bearable at first.

Yet the belief in favoring boys over girls was passed down, and the moment her grandparents embraced their grandson, Leng Le’s life plunged back into the cold.

When she was hungry, they gave her food; when she was cold, they gave her clothing; when she was sick, they took her to see a doctor. Leng Le received only the bare minimum for survival, never feeling any love or affection. She didn’t enjoy toys or delicious treats like other children.

Have you ever experienced that feeling? Other children would walk by with ice cream cones, holding their parents’ hands, while Leng Le could only dryly gaze at the treats and then glance at the other children, yearning deep in her heart for a similar life.

When Leng Le saw her grandparents holding their cherished grandson, their smiles beaming with happiness, the young Leng Le knew it was something she would never have. She held back her tears, hiding under the covers to weep secretly—she began to hate the world.

At home, there was no love, no warmth; at school, there was no friendship, only bullying from classmates. Leng Le became more and more reclusive, her heart growing colder—nobody cared for her or paid her any attention, and she stopped caring about anyone or anything; nothing in this world mattered to her.

At twelve, a classmate bullied Leng Le, cutting her hair. The reason was simple—when upset, Leng Le had no parents to stand up for her.

Normally, Leng Le would have just silently endured such bullying, until one day, after school, she happened to see the classmate who had bullied her fall into a river while riding a bike.

The classmate struggled desperately, flailing in the water.

Only Leng Le was passing by, so the classmate cried out to her for help.

Leng Le merely glanced and then walked away indifferently, as if nothing had happened.

The next day, the class was one student short. At first, no one paid much attention to it, until the teacher explained yesterday’s incident, shocking everyone.

However, Leng Le remained calm, continuing with her classes, utterly unaffected by the murmurs of her classmates, even feeling that her life shouldn’t be plagued by such annoying people.

Also that year, Leng Le saw a classmate who had once kicked her walking home from school. Recalling the times he had bullied her, and with a river nearby, she thought of the previous incident.

Without hesitation, Leng Le caught up, delivering a retaliatory kick that sent the classmate tumbling into the river.

The classmate struggled frantically in the water, while Leng Le watched with an unsurprised look, cycling home and even smiling at the cries behind her.

Witnessing two classmates fall into the river and not return to class instilled in Leng Le a feeling of gratifying revenge. She began to realize that her past patience was a mistake—those who bullied her deserved to pay.

It was under such conditions that Leng Le grew colder, veering toward the extreme.
