Chapter 1342: Chapter 1342: Roaming the Streets

Gu Fan once again approached the window, stealthily peering out, and noticed that the curtain in the house opposite seemed to have been lifted a fraction.

"Damn, someone’s living in that house?" Gu Fan felt a chill in his heart; this did not seem normal to him.

According to what brother glasses had said earlier, even if the previous owner of the neighboring house really couldn’t return, Organization X had arranged for new residents, but there was no need to be so secretive about it.

No lights, curtains drawn—it was clear they didn’t want anyone to know the house was inhabited, which was the same initial approach Gu Fan had taken.

Had Gu Fan slipped into Dark City covertly, could it be that the person in the neighboring house had also sneaked in? Perhaps they were afraid of being discovered?

"Brother glasses, you really set me up with a great neighbor." Gu Fan felt jittery, hoping the new neighbor wouldn’t stir up trouble and inadvertently attract the attention of Organization X, which would also be troublesome for him.

At the same time, Leng Le let the curtain fall, feeling confident that no one had noticed. The house next door stayed dark; surely no one was living there.

Someone complained, "Sister Leng, we’ve been here several days now, not allowed out or to turn on the lights—it’s pitch black, can’t blame us for bumping into things, right?"

"I know, just be careful," Leng Le replied before heading upstairs, only for someone to whine with a pained expression, "Sister Leng, how long do we have to stay in this place, what are we exactly here to do? Could you please tell us?"

"Yeah, Sister Leng! You originally said you would bring us to a place to make a fortune, but who would’ve thought it’d be here?" Some people exhibited regret, and their resentment grew by the minute, making Leng Le feel as if she was losing control of the situation.

Leng Le simply remarked, "Did you really think striking it rich would be so easy? High risk, high reward—I told you all before we left. There’s nothing to complain about now, and drop your resentment, don’t let that person see."

Of course, Leng Le was referring to the mysterious masked figure, and instantly, an invisible deterrence enveloped and quashed all dissent.

Seeing her subordinates fall silent, Leng Le had nothing more to say; nothing could boost morale under the circumstances. So, she just headed upstairs directly.

After Leng Le left, the group dared to whisper, "What do we do? If we keep staying here, I’m afraid..."

"I’ve come all this way, turning back now isn’t exactly easy..."

"Don’t blame Sister Leng. Can’t you see that she’s also helpless? Everything is dictated by the guy in the mask..."

"Yeah, looks like we can only resign ourselves to fate now." Some sighed, then everyone turned back and lay down.

In the meantime, Gu Fan was outside, close to the window, eavesdropping on the conversation but didn’t catch much, except the words "Sister Leng," which made him sensitive and wonder if by some coincidence Sister Leng could be his ex-girlfriend.

Wary of being discovered, Gu Fan only listened in for a short while before hastily retreating, his heart pounding with the thrill of eavesdropping.

Later, Gu Fan checked the time; it was only seven in the evening, long before bedtime. He couldn’t just hide here, eating and sleeping. If so, coming here would have been pointless.

Thus, Gu Fan decided not to return that evening but to look around instead, gradually familiarizing himself with the area in the hope of mastering the layout and streets before Su Hui and Lin Xi arrived.

Gu Fan had stayed indoors for three days without leaving, partly because the deal had just been completed and Organization X would surely still be on guard, suspecting Gu Fan might try something. It was best not to venture out.

Dark City had only one Door for entry and exit, known as the Dark Door, its purpose to facilitate control over people’s comings and goings, the door, being jet-black, also earned its name.

Stepping through the Dark Door led to a black road, the only main street here, known as Dark Street, which served to connect the Tower of Darkness with the Dark Gate.

Since Dark Street was the main thoroughfare, it was naturally the busiest locale in Dark City, with many shops on both sides, including pubs, nightclubs, sauna baths, casinos, KTVs, and other recreational amenities.

However, being active on Dark Street meant exposure under the eyes of the Tower of Darkness. As the main street, surveillance would definitely be the most extensive, which is why Gu Fan resolved not to go there.

Aside from the main street, there were many smaller streets and alleys threading through Dark City. Gu Fan wandered close to the main street, committing to memory everything about the major and minor roads, the types of buildings on both sides.

Having arrived, Gu Fan was under no illusion that he could leave easily, so a bit more knowledge of the area could increase his odds of success.

To be safe, however, Gu Fan divided Dark City into seven districts, planning to explore one per day along a designated route to make it look like casual strolling rather than intentional reconnaissance.

While Gu Fan was looking around, he suddenly heard a noisy commotion and, out of curiosity, went to see.

A group of drunken men was brawling, starting with just fists and feet but escalating to vicious blows, with one grabbing a bottle to smash over another’s head.

Gu Fan quickly distanced himself; he had no desire to court trouble. Besides, if he were Organization X, he would scrutinize the monitors for signs of fights. If they caught sight of him at the scene, it could lead to trouble, so he dared not linger, constantly aware of the dangers around him.

Yet, Gu Fan hadn’t gone far when he encountered another group quarreling. Even though he couldn’t understand what was being cursed during the fight, it sounded ugly. However, the other group responded in a different language.

"Fucking hell, not even speaking the same language and you still manage such conflict. You’re really something," Gu Fan had no intention to interfere, deciding to go around. Just as he turned the corner in a small alley, he saw yet another group fighting.

At that moment, Gu Fan realized life here might be rather dull, thus the fondness for gang fights. After all, those entertainment venues were expensive, everyone was strapped for cash, so...

"Man, what’s going on? Organization X doesn’t even care to manage things." Gu Fan blurted out a sigh, then immediately heard a questioning voice from behind, "Do you have some complaint about Organization X?"

Startled, Gu Fan whipped around to find a man, suave in a suit and leather shoes, staring coldly at him.
