Chapter 544: Blood Money

Chapter 544: Chapter 544: Blood Money

"They’ll come, won’t they?"

On the corner of 27th Avenue in Holy Oak, Opportunity City, Hall, Priskin, and Lucina stood at the entrance to an alley, watching the street.

Today was a rest day, and the streets were busier than usual, further amplified by the fact that this was a rich district, teeming with cars and people—it seemed a little too lively.

Hall was somewhat uncertain about the situation, Priskin, however, didn’t care much and quietly waited leaning against the wall, Lucina didn’t seem as confident as she was yesterday, although 10,000 union coins was no small sum, after all, the other party was just an ordinary janitor, who might get cold feet at the key moment.

"They will come, for them, it’s a lot of money," Lucina said.

"Hope so, if they don’t, we’re out of options," Hall said helplessly.

At that moment, a gray-blue van appeared around the street corner, took a turn, and headed straight toward the alley entrance where Lucina and the others were.

"See, I told you they would come," Lucina elbowed Hall and laughed.

"Wait a minute..." Hall grabbed Lucina’s arm, wanting to say something.

"What?" Lucina asked, raising an eyebrow.

"You’re not really going to give them the money, are you?" Hall asked.

"What do you mean?" Lucina didn’t understand.

"What he means is, after we get our hands on the van..." Priskin motioned a throat-slashing gesture with his finger across his neck.

"I wasn’t planning on that," Lucina shook her head.

"Who knows if they’ll talk. Dead men keep secrets," Hall said.

"Hmm..." Lucina hesitated as well.

While they were talking, the van had already driven over, the janitor waved at Lucina from the car window, she nodded at them, and gestured for them to park in the alley.

The van turned around, reversed into the alley with its rear end first, and the two janitors jumped down, tossing the keys to Lucina.

"Look, lady, we’re on time, right?" the janitor smiled.

Priskin was still leaning at the alley entrance keeping watch, while Hall walked to the back of the van and slid open the side door to look inside.

"Are the janitor’s clothes, badges, and tools all inside?" Lucina asked.

The janitor nodded and led Lucina to the van to check.

There were three badges, a pile of various tools like large mops, cleaning agents, toilet pipe dissolvers, deodorizers, and containers and boxes in white and green stacked inside the van, three sets of somewhat dirty janitor overalls were also laid on the boxes.

These two janitors were in plain clothes, clearly they had changed after leaving their company, and all three badges had photos, Lucina still needed to make a copy based on these badges.

Although the robbery was set for the afternoon, with the help of Chen Ke’s apartment, they had unlimited time to prepare their disguises for infiltration.

"Just the two of you? I see three sets of clothes," Hall asked.

"Just us two, no one else, the owner of the other set and badge has retired," the janitor said.

"Good... very good..." Hall nodded, glanced at Priskin at the entrance of the alley, who also nodded back.

Lucina pulled a bundle of bills out of her pocket, exactly 10,000 union coins.

At that point, the janitor used his body to block Lucina from his partner, then instructed, "Hey, you’d better teach them how to put on these clothes."

Hall chimed in, "Right, I’ve never worn such overalls, you’d better show me how to zip them up."

The other janitor picked up a set of clothes and walked with Hall toward the back of the van.

Lucina glanced at Hall, understanding what he was about to do.

She clutched the money and handed it to the janitor, who reached for it, but then she pulled her hand back.

"See, this is 10,000 union coins. I know you’ve cheated your partner, you’re not going to split the 5,000, are you?" Lucina asked.

"A man dies for money, lady. I have three kids to feed, and my eldest son has always wanted to play professional basketball, I want to get him a good coach," the janitor said without a hint of shame.

"Oh... What’s his name?" Lucina asked.

"He’s called Mike, 14 years old. Now, are you going to give me the money or not?" the cleaner said.

"Good luck..." Lucina replied.

The cleaner took the money, quickly stuffed it into his pocket, and smiled, "Very well, it was a pleasure doing business with you, ma’am. Uh, just don’t scratch the car."

Lucina watched the cleaner in silence, sidestepping to let him pass.

"Hey! We should get going!" the cleaner yelled towards the back of the car, but his partner did not respond.

Peering around the back of the car, the cleaner saw his partner’s shoes slip out from under the tail of the car, as if he was lying on the ground. Suddenly realizing something, he turned back to look at Priskin at the entrance of the alley.

Priskin, at some point, had a gun in hand, and of course, it was fitted with a silencer.

"Ma’am...this isn’t what we agreed on," the cleaner said in a panic, looking at Lucina with fear and confusion in his eyes.

"I’m sorry...only dead men keep secrets," Lucina said, shaking her head, feeling terrible.

"I have three children to feed... please... please, ma’am, I don’t want the money anymore... ma’am, I’m begging you... plea... uh!! Uh!!! Cough......ah uh......" The cleaner’s pleas were cut off as Hall had snuck up behind him, his hands pulling taut a fiber-optic wire, tightly wrapping it around the cleaner’s neck. The thin wire dug into the flesh of his neck, carving a bloody groove.

Struggling, the cleaner’s feet lifted off the ground while Hall silently continued to tighten his grip. The cleaner pulled out the money, trying to hand it back to Lucina in a futile attempt to barter for his life, even at this moment.

Lucina stepped back, letting the money in the cleaner’s hand fall to the ground.

"Uh uh... mm... cough..."

"Wuh..."

The cleaner went completely still, hands dangling at his sides, motionless against Hall’s body.

Hall retracted the fiber-optic wire, wiped it with a white cloth, and dragged the cleaner’s body into the car, then began to deal with the other body.

Priskin gave Hall a thumbs up, looked outside to make sure no one was watching, then moved to the passenger side of the car.

"Hey, Lu, the keys." Hall wiped the sweat from his forehead and looked at Lucina.

Lucina bent down to pick up the wad of money from the ground, as if she wanted to say something but then held back, tossing the keys to Hall before climbing into the car.

"Tell Chen Ke that the car has been positioned, but we need time to clean up two bodies and to work on fake number plates," Priskin said.

"I’ve already called him," Lucina said, putting the phone to her ear.

The car drove out of the alley onto the main road, heading towards Lucina’s home. Hall sensed something was off with Lucina and reached out to tap her sitting behind.

"What?" Lucina asked, slightly irritated for some reason.

"What’s wrong? Too tense?" Hall asked.

"No... I don’t know, it’s my first time feeling like this. Stop bothering me, let me be alone," Lucina said.

Hall exhaled heavily, no longer bothering her, as Chen Ke’s voice came through the phone.

"How did it go?" Chen Ke asked.

"It’s done," Lucina replied.

"I was thinking about it yesterday, you shouldn’t have given them the money," Chen Ke said.

"What?" Lucina asked.

"You said you bribed the cleaner, right?" Chen Ke said.

"Yes, but they’re no longer a problem," Lucina replied.

"Come to me to dispose of the bodies," Chen Ke said.

"... Alright," Lucina replied.

She hung up the phone, a troubling feeling lingering in her mind.
