Chapter 542: Chapter 542: Unexpected Developments
"I’m not interested," Chen Ke said directly, grateful that it was dark here so that the other party couldn’t see his expression.
"Please, Lin Mo, for old time’s sake, can we pretend we never met?" the woman said.
"I don’t have any old ties with you," Chen Ke said firmly.
Chen Ke didn’t have Lin Mo’s memories, so he couldn’t be sure whether this woman’s words were true or false. The woman seemed to know Lin Mo, but whether she was an old lover or not was another matter. Lin Mo was an assassin, often walking the underworld; it would be unusual if he didn’t have many enemies.
"You really hurt my feelings by saying that, have you forgotten what happened in Honggang?" the woman said.
"Honggang..." Chen Ke had never heard of this place.
"What happened to you? Did you... lose your memory...?" the woman asked.
"Of course not... The incident in Honggang wasn’t my fault, and this isn’t the place to talk about it," Chen Ke said.
"I didn’t mean to blame you... You must have taken care of the security, right?" the woman said.
"You missed one," Chen Ke replied.
"I never planned to stay here long. Lin Mo, where have you been all these years? After you left Honggang, I could never find out anything about you," the woman asked.
"That’s none of your business," Chen Ke said.
"Hey, why don’t we leave this place, then go to your place... or find a hotel to catch up?" the woman said.
"Why don’t you tell me why you and your companion tried to rob the Administration Bureau?" Chen Ke asked.
"If you’re willing to join, our boss will tell you. Do you want to join?" the woman asked.
"I’ve stopped working for others," Chen Ke shook his head.
"That’s really unusual for you; you’ve always been one to take the money and ask no questions, but now, why are you also stealing these Spirit Power Sealing Hand Grenades?" the woman asked.
Chen Ke didn’t answer her; he had already dragged this on too long, said too much nonsense.
"Not talking, huh? Are you in some kind of trouble...?" the woman asked.
"Tonight we must leave one behind, you understand what I mean?" Chen Ke said.
"I won’t be staying," the woman said.
At that moment, the temperature inside the room seemed to rise slightly, and both of them unconsciously loosened their collars. Chen Ke saw someone outside the large iron door of the warehouse, trying to melt the lock.
"Something’s wrong here, do you want to keep pointing that gun at me or shall we get out of here first and talk later?" the woman asked.
"Are you afraid of being caught?" Chen Ke said.
The woman was visibly panicked, trying to move toward a small door.
"You better not move, I can see you," Chen Ke’s blue eyes shimmered like two lights in the darkness.
"Lin Mo... are you a Spiritual Ability User? What’s happened to you? Don’t tell me you’ve joined the Administration Bureau?" the woman said nervously.
Finally, the big iron door was pushed open. Diana stood in the doorway backlit by moonlight, the silver light casting Chen Ke and the woman’s shadows on the wall, with Diana holding a red-hot copper lock in her hand.
"You’ve taken too much time, what’s hap... oh fuck..." Diana slowly walked in, pointing a gun at an Asian woman. Upon seeing the woman’s face, she couldn’t help but curse.
Chen Ke could also see the woman’s appearance under the moonlight, she was of average height, pale-faced, and half of her face bore severe burn scars; she looked like a monster at first glance.
"Ah..." Chen Ke involuntarily took in a sharp breath; it’s often said that everything’s the same once the lights are off, and this wasn’t unreasonable—by voice alone, this woman did indeed give off an alluring impression, but one look at her face was enough to eliminate any interest.
"I’ve said it before; I don’t blame you, and it looks like you already have a new lover," the woman said, knowing her face was frightening, so she angled her face toward the shadows.
From the woman’s words, Chen Ke inferred that Lin Mo and she must have done something together in Honggang, and there might have been emotional involvement, the disfigurement was very likely because of Lin Mo.
"Who is she?" Diana approached slowly.
"I don’t know her," Chen Ke shook his head.
"What are you going to do with her?" Diana asked.
"Knock her out, leave her here, and give the Administration Bureau an explanation," Chen Ke said.
Diana nodded in agreement.
"Lin Mo, I’ve sacrificed too much for you, this time I won’t let you have your way!" Seeing that Chen Ke and Diana had made up their minds, the woman knew she had to act now or it might be too late; she suddenly lowered her hands and kicked Chen Ke.
"Ha!" Chen Ke scoffed, pressed the muzzle of his USP pistol against the woman’s throat, then swiftly chopped at her neck.
"Gu... cough..." staggered by the blow, the woman backed into a rack of grenades, grabbing onto the rack to prevent herself from falling.
Chen Ke advanced a step and landed a hook punch on the woman’s upper abdomen; she fell to the ground, clutching her stomach and retching.
"Lin Mo... you’ll regret this!" the woman hissed, pulling a pin from a grenade and throwing it at Chen Ke, then struggling toward a nearby door.
Chen Ke caught the grenade and used time-stop to halt it; at the same time, Diana kicked the woman’s cheek, knocking her out cold.
Saliva dribbled from the woman’s mouth as she lay motionless, her face turned sideways on the ground.
"Who is she? Why did she call you Lin Mo?" Diana asked, looking at the woman on the floor.
"I don’t know her; she must have mistaken me for someone else, but there’s bad news—we aren’t the only ones trying to take from the Administration Bureau," Chen Ke shook his head.
"It’s not bad news; if someone else wants to steal from the Administration Bureau like us, we might be able to fish in troubled waters," Diana said.
"That brings uncertainty, I don’t like uncertainties," Chen Ke sighed and looked at the Spiritual Energy Sealing Hand Grenade in his hand.
"Here, this is the pin... just push it back in," Diana handed a small metal pin that had fallen on the ground to Chen Ke.
They checked the woman’s two packed backpacks, which were filled with 18 Spiritual Ability Hand Grenades in total—enough for their use. Diana went back to the security hut to find some ropes and tied up the woman.
Chen Ke, meanwhile, left the grenade in the security hut and did not insert the pin back in.
Once everything was ready, the two got in the car and placed the grenade on the back seat.
"Don’t tell Lucina about this; it’s already chaotic enough with her seeing me with you," Chen Ke said.
"Of course, I initially thought you would prefer someone like Wang Ailin," Diana remarked.
"Alright, the security guards will have their hands full soon; let’s hope they can handle her," Chen Ke said as he started the vehicle.
As the car distanced itself from the factory, the Spiritual Energy Sealing Hand Grenade on the security room’s table exploded with a bang, blowing off its lid, and fiery and blue light shot out of the round holes covering its body, even scorching the television screen.
The only guard not injected with anesthetic was jolted awake, seeing his colleagues on the ground and the mess scattered by the explosion, he frantically pressed the alarm and hurriedly dialed the County Police station.
