Chapter 534: Chapter 534 Internal Issues
Steve tossed his phone onto the office desk and massaged his temples with a sigh, unsure of what to do next.
He couldn’t reach the woman; had the Human Connection Plan Foundation abandoned him?
No, perhaps she was just temporarily unavailable, maybe caught up in a different era by some matters?
Steve conjured up various reasons to comfort himself. After all, she was someone who transcended time; his current predicament must be visible to her.
The office door was knocked, and Steve hurriedly tucked the phone into a drawer before composing himself and calling out, "Come in."
It was Madeline.
"Mrs. Madeline," Steve greeted as he looked up.
"Steve, do you have time for a cup of coffee?" Madeline asked.
At the garden café beneath the CPA building, the two of them sat at a table surrounded by quietness. It was early spring, and the air was still a bit chilly. Madeline sipped her coffee, then looked at Steve.
"No need to beat around the bush, Madeline," Steve said.
"I want to ask for your thoughts on time," Madeline said, gazing at the distant wall as if her mind was elsewhere.
"How so... why ask all of a sudden?" Steve chuckled.
"I’m no longer young, and sometimes my actions can be harsh and practical, leading me to make choices that go against my true desires," Madeline said.
"Oh... we’re the same in that regard," Steve replied.
"That’s why I want to ask for your thoughts on time," Madeline repeated.
"I don’t understand... what do you mean? What are you getting at?" Steve narrowed his eyes.
Madeline pulled a kraft paper envelope from her bag and handed it to Steve.
"These are copies, top secret," Madeline stated.
Steve looked at the envelope on the table, furrowing his brows and squinting at Madeline, who watched him with an expressionless, cold gaze.
He opened the envelope to find a brown piece of paper. Unfolding it, there was only one sentence written:
"Let that man have six months of freedom; afterward, we will deal with him. Unless he does something unforgivable, do not interfere."
"This is..." Steve was filled with question marks as he read, but as he looked further down, he recognized the familiar black seal.
It was indeed the seal of the Human Connection Plan Foundation.
"Who is this man...?" Steve asked.
"Chen Ke, I thought you remembered him," Madeline said.
"Chen Ke...? I don’t recall. Is this an instruction from the Human Cradle Plan Foundation? What did he do?" Steve inquired.
"Have you really forgotten? The suspect in the West Gold Building’s gun-losing case, Diana seemed connected to him," Madeline informed.
"What does this have to do with us? Haven’t we always been infiltrating both foundations... just to help the old men in the Divine Secret Society find clues to the fragments of divine heart..." Steve remarked.
"Shh... those people are always watching us. If something goes wrong in the future, they can travel through time and find the moment we leaked information..." Madeline said tensely.
"If that were the case, the foundation’s agents would have killed us already; but getting back to it, what did this Chen Ke do? Why would the foundation leave a letter?" Steve pressed.
"I don’t know, but it’s been a while since Diana came to work, and she doesn’t usually do this," Madeline said.
"Diana...? Maybe she took leave, or maybe she..." Steve gestured helplessly.
"Maybe she’s with Chen Ke? Who knows?" Madeline posited.
"Who gave you this letter? Does the chairman know?" Steve asked.
"The chairman found it on his desk; that’s the problem. The letter wasn’t given to him by anyone; it just appeared there, as if it had been there for a long time... and the chairman hadn’t noticed it until now," Madeline explained.
"Meme...?" Steve guessed, now taking it seriously.
"I don’t know; I even doubt if it was left by the foundation," Madeline said.
"No, it must have been; that seal can’t be forged, it’s not a typical stamp, but a memetic mark..." Steve pointed to the seal on the paper.
In fact, if a third party were present, that seal would be invisible.
"This isn’t the Human Cradle Plan Foundation’s usual way of operating. When they submit requests to the Administration Bureau, there would be an agent to explain it in person. But this time, only this piece of paper was left," Madeline said.
"Perhaps... perhaps there was indeed an agent who explained in person..." Steve pondered, stroking his chin.
"You’re probably thinking like I am," Madeline took a sip of coffee.
"Time... perhaps it has been altered," Steve said.
"Exactly, someone rewrote time, and this letter must have been left by an agent of the foundation at some point. However, after time was rewritten, the chairman forgot about it..." Madeline replied.
"Do you think it was done by the Human Connection Plan Foundation?" Steve asked.
"That’s a question for you," Madeline said.
"What do the old men at the Divine Secret Society have to say?" Steve asked.
"They haven’t reached a conclusion yet," Madeline replied.
"The FBI chief is dead, and last night, Yasla’s territory was burned to the ground. Do you think these two events are related to the foundation?" Steve questioned.
"I don’t think so. If those two foundations were to clash, it wouldn’t be in our era. White’s death, however, has made those old men very angry," Madeline shook her head.
"Have you had any recent contact with someone from the foundation?" Steve probed further.
"No, have you?" Madeline countered.
"I haven’t either. I have a bad feeling, like we’ve been abandoned," Steve confessed.
"I share your bad feeling. I feel like we’ve lived through this spring twice, and something significant is bound to happen soon," Madeline said.
"Relax, Madeline, perhaps many things have already occurred, and we’re just too dull to have realized it yet," Steve offered.
"After all, we’re not like those old men, who have received divine revelations. So, Steve, what are your thoughts on time?" Madeline inquired.
"If something is destined to happen, it has to be under my watch," Steve declared.
"That’s an optimistic thought, but it seems we’re doomed to be the last to know. Thank you for sparing a few minutes to talk, even though we didn’t come to any conclusion," Madeline stood up.
"Just one thing, as a boss, you should pay more attention to your subordinates. I advise you to find out what Diana has been doing during the days she’s been missing," Madeline suggested as she prepared to leave, then turned around with a meaningful smile and walked away.
Steve sat in his chair, a mix of emotions welling up inside him as he sighed deeply.
