Chapter 520: The Flaw in Glory
Chapter 520: Chapter 520: The Flaw in Glory
Chen Ke had been spending most of his time at Li Moyang’s manor these last few days, but he returned to Lucina’s house at night.
A few days earlier, Priskin had returned to Opportunity City. Initially, he had taken a trip back to his hometown, Suluo. When he heard the Postman Organization in Opportunity City had suffered a severe blow, and that even Pihom had lost his life, he was incredibly shocked.
Chen Ke and the others had conducted a small funeral for Pihom and Hainerd. That night, when they fled, they couldn’t take the bodies with them, and when they returned later, the site had been razed. The bodies were surely disposed of by the conglomerate’s men.
Lucina had been in poor spirits, distracting herself with intense workouts. After resting for a few days, Hall and Priskin planned to leave Opportunity City.
The polymorphous rubber clay, now scattered. Without Pihom, the branches of the Postman Organization in Opportunity City had all been severed. Bain soon received the news and ceased contact with Lucina.
Such was the reality of the adult world.
Fortunately, Hainerd’s fishery had been preserved, and Chen Ke continuously persuaded Lucina to take over the business to at least maintain an income. The fishery didn’t yield much profit annually but could support a modest lifestyle for a family of three.
Chen Ke’s mind was absorbed by the auction. After Hall and Priskin left, he felt he should spend some time with Lucina—she had been through too much these last few months.
He couldn’t say he was unemotional about the Postman Organization, despite joining initially by mistake. This little group, living off robberies, had been his first stop in this world.
Though the members were criminals, they could at least sit together, have a drink, and chat.
Chen Ke remembered Hall, who loved gaming; Pihom, who favored vintage guns; Hainerd, who risked everything for his family; Priskin, the gun modification fanatic; and of course, the volatile beauty, Lucina.
Now, only Lucina was left by his side. The end of the Postman Organization was truly lamentable.
By day, whiskey; by night, coffee. Chen Ke moved between the two houses, waiting for the day of the auction.
The tender nights did not quench the daytime agitation. Lucina was a prairie ablaze, willed to consume herself in the flames, and Chen Ke, unable to quell this wildfire, could only destroy her without restraint.
On the seventh morning, Chen Ke finally received a call from Li Moyang; the manor was ready, invitations had been sent, and news of the Green Holy Diamond auction had already spread through the underworld.
Private spiritual armed forces, dangerous Holy Relics smugglers, and some countries restricted in spiritual development had already set out towards Opportunity City, a city about to gather a group of dangerous individuals.
"I want to ask you a serious question," Lucina said as she lay on Chen Ke, her cheek pressed against his chest, her left hand caressing the spiral mark on Chen Ke’s chest.
"You’re not jealous of Diana, are you?" Chen Ke asked.
"It’s hard not to be jealous. To save her, you and your new friends orchestrated such an elaborate scene," Lucina said.
"If you’re jealous, I could throw you into Yasla’s lair, let them toy with you for a week, then stage a grand rescue just like this one," Chen Ke said.
"You’re really fucking funny," Lucina said.
"Is that what you wanted to ask?" Chen Ke said.
"No, I was wondering if I can go to the auction," Lucina looked at Chen Ke.
Chen Ke looked down and glanced at Lucina.
...
On the ninth night, at 9 PM.
The manor glowed with brilliance, its yard filled with luxury cars, and Li Moyang had fashioned the auction into a top-tier private wine party, set to officially begin at 10:30 PM.
True to the scale of the auction, the manor seemed somewhat small, yet considering all the items up for bidding were illicit Holy Relics, it maybe kept things suitably understated.
The number of guests attending the auction wasn’t high. Li Moyang had sent out a total of 120 invitations, and everyone invited had arrived. Beyond their interest in the Holy Relics, the attendees were even keener on getting to know the organizers to establish potential long-term cooperation.
A melodious violin played throughout the manor while soft blue lighting enveloped the hall. The long table bore exquisite dishes for self-service dining, and Li Moyang even provided some adult-level entertainment acts as appetizers, altogether setting a well-fostered atmosphere.
"I admit I’m jealous. I’m truly jealous," Lucina said, holding her wine glass among the crowd.
She wore a red silk dress, her brownish-black hair cascading over her shoulders and back, lips painted red. A compact Glock pistol hugged her thigh; none here were decent folk, and the gun was her means of protection.
Meanwhile, Chen Ke stood not far off with a few security staff, serving in his role as head of security today, continuously scanning the surroundings of the manor for any sign of Yasla’s people through his Spiritual Vision.
Pankia and Li Moyang were on the third floor of the manor, in a concealed room equipped with top-notch security, an elevator directly connecting to the underground parking. In case of an emergency, they could escape on their own, without distracting Chen Ke.
Sleery sipped her drink not far from Chen Ke, dressed in a purple dress with a plunging V-neck and backless design, showcasing her shapely figure, with many guests stopping to chat with her for a bit.
Lucina also attracted quite a few men, to whom she nodded and smiled warmly, dismissing them with a friendly "Go home and fuck yourself." Her heart and body belonged solely to Chen Ke.
"Chen Ke... found anything?" Li Moyang asked over the earpiece.
Chen Ke, wearing sunglasses, was patrolling the hall. So far, he hadn’t spotted any of Yasla’s people. At least those items were easy to recognize, so Chen Ke didn’t think they would infiltrate, but they might well attempt a brazen robbery.
"No, everything is normal," Chen Ke replied.
"I hope they fall for it, after all, only they understand the meaning of the Holy Diamond. As far as I know, the guests present are more interested in the large stock of illegal Holy Relics held by Lescott," Li Moyang said helplessly.
"Don’t be impatient, we have been waiting for nine days now... a few more hours won’t make a difference," Chen Ke said.
"I just don’t want you to be disappointed," Li Moyang laughed.
"You’re really considerate," Chen Ke said.
"Pankia and I will keep watching through the monitors, you don’t need to be so meticulous down there, just enjoy tonight," Li Moyang said.
"I will notify you if anything happens," Chen Ke ended the call.
At that moment, Sleery approached Chen Ke with two glasses of wine.
"Hey, Chen Ke," Sleery handed a glass to Chen Ke.
"Security personnel can’t drink," Chen Ke bowed slightly.
"Stop pretending, Chen Ke. Do you know how many people asked me for your phone number tonight?" Sleery laughed.
"We’re not here to play. Tonight might be dangerous, you should stay with your father," Chen Ke reminded.
"Don’t be such a killjoy. This house can block Spiritual Energy, remember? Here, guns can kill them," Sleery laughed.
"That doesn’t mean you can handle them. By the way, do you have any Spiritual Energy in you now?" Chen Ke suddenly asked.
"No, I’m no longer an investigator. Why do you ask?" Sleery questioned.
"It’s nothing..." While speaking, Chen Ke’s gaze drifted over Sleery’s shoulder, searching for Lucina.
"Chen Ke, it’s so hot in here, would you walk outside with me?" Sleery put her glass on a waiter’s tray and attempted to wrap her arm around Chen Ke’s waist, but he stepped back to avoid her.
"Can’t you lighten up? You’re the hardest man to get close to I’ve ever met," Sleery complained.
However, Chen Ke didn’t hear Sleery as he finally spotted Lucina across the crowd. A Black man in a crisp suit was chatting her up.
"Hello, lady... you really are... sexy," the Black man smiled.
"Oh, you’re pretty straightforward, you know? Sexy isn’t a word you should just throw around," Lucina smiled back.
"I’m just frank, excuse my boldness... lady, do you have a partner?" the Black man asked.
"I’m married," Lucina smiled.
"Oh, that’s really unfortunate. Your partner should match you well, right? Is he a tall white man, or a handsome Black man like me?" the Black man laughed.
"Neither, and it’s none of your business," Lucina also laughed.
"Hahaha... you really don’t mince words," the Black man wasn’t upset.
"I hope I didn’t make you uncomfortable, if so, you can go to the bathroom and stew about it," Lucina laughed.
"No, no, I’m not that petty, but I might know your partner, we are good friends," the Black man said.
"Oh? That kind of approach hasn’t been used in a long time," Lucina said.
"No, no... I’m not trying to cozy up. I just want to draw him out to meet me alone. His name is Chen Ke, right?" the Black man said.
Lucina’s expression turned sharp, and her left hand instinctively reached for the gun strapped to her thigh.
The Black man grabbed Lucina’s arm, his eyes flashing a red halo. Lucina’s muscles tensed up, a wave of resentment shattered her spiritual power, and her body went limp.
The Black man held her close, letting her head rest on his shoulder and walked her out of the hall.
"You... you bastard... who are you...?" Lucina still had some consciousness, but her body was completely controlled by the Black man.
"My name is Bader, dear lady, after tonight, you might become a widow," Bader said.
