Chapter 519: Chapter 519 Unstable Alliance
Li Moyang’s actions were swift; the very next day, he began making preparations for the auction of the Holy Relics.
Organizing an auction was no simple matter, especially considering that the bidders were individuals who hoped to conceal their identities as much as possible, so there was a lot to do.
First of all, as the organizer, Li Moyang needed to establish a shell company and put together a very large team to drive the project forward.
Although Li Moyang was to stay behind the scenes, he didn’t consider hiding his identity. After all, the Spiritual Ability Enterprises of the United Federation, more or less, did things that touched on the laws of the Administration Bureau. This was an industry trial by fire, and they maintained the current situation through bribery.
This illegal Holy Relics auction could be seen as Li Moyang’s declaration of entering the industry. It was also one of the reasons he was willing to help Chen Ke—it would not only repay a favor to Chen Ke but also serve as an opportunity to show his determination to both the overworld and the underworld leaders, killing two birds with one stone.
Li Moyang decided to hold the auction at this mansion, which Chen Ke initially objected to vehemently, considering Li Moyang’s safety issue. After all, the purpose was to draw out Yasla’s people, and complications were bound to arise.
But Li Moyang wasn’t worried about these issues. Besides, the mansion was a property the foundation had forced him to buy, and he had long been scouting for a new place to stay. He had lost interest in residing in this large estate.
With Li Moyang’s ability, assembling an auction organization team and establishing a nominal shell company took only a morning and an afternoon.
The auction team consisted of over 80 people. The list of personnel was faxed to Li Moyang, and everyone was scheduled to arrive that night.
Preparing for the auction took longer than the week Chen Ke needed. Chen Ke found it hard to wait that long, and so did Diana. But not everyone in the world could accommodate Chen Ke’s pace, and organizing an underground auction was a very high-energy endeavor in itself.
Not to mention the preparation of venue staff and the setup of security measures on the day of the auction, just disseminating the news through various underground channels took time to settle.
Moreover, Li Moyang utilized the intelligence network of Wuan Heavy Industry, offering invitations to many forces hoping to smuggle Holy Relics from the United Federation.
The underground leaders were highly suspicious, and enticing them to appear at the auction required some effort. But it would be worth it if they decided to show up, as it would lend much more credibility to the auction.
Therefore, Li Moyang had custom-made invitations and accompanying contents, hoping to convince those important figures that attending would be worthwhile.
The invitation was to be crafted from purple crystal, making a small token about the same size as a driver’s license, enclosed in a purple envelope, and accompanied by a list of auction items, including a solemn introduction of the Holy Relics and specifically highlighting a green Holy Diamond as the premiere item of the auction.
The total cost of labour, venue, and materials for the auction exceeded ten million union coins. In theory, if Li Moyang truly had items that could be sold, profit was to be expected, but Chen Ke wasn’t sure if the auction intended to lure Yasla could fool people in the industry.
"Don’t worry, Chen Ke. We can fake it till we make it," said Li Moyang. He did have Holy Relics to sell, and quite a few at that.
After all, in the past few days, he had initiated the acquisition of Lescott Spirit Production, and although the transaction wasn’t complete yet, Li Moyang already had the right to allocate and divvy up Lescott’s assets.
All that was left to do was wait.
Seven days weren’t too agonizing for Chen Ke, equalling just 164 hours. His soul reserves were still abundant. However, he was more concerned about Diana. With each passing day, her risk of death grew higher.
Meanwhile, during the wait, Chen Ke naturally wouldn’t sit idle. When Li Moyang agreed to help Chen Ke, it meant that Chen Ke had joined the plan that he and Pankia had.
What Li Moyang wanted to do, as he stated, was to discern the essence of Spiritual Power and rid the world of Spiritual Ability Users. He was genuinely interested in researching Spiritual Energy, and the Spiritual Business was just a cover.
He had reached out to Pankia solely to handle the Spiritual Business affairs in the United Federation so that he could focus on his tasks.
Chen Ke’s role was to help Li Moyang guard against people from the foundation.
Killing Lin Yaying didn’t mean he was entirely free from the foundation’s control. Her death must have been known by the foundation, but their retaliation might not happen now—perhaps it had occurred in the past or would happen in the future.
If the foundation attempted to alter the past to erase Li Moyang, they would be out of options. But 2009 was also an important year for the foundation, so Li Moyang had taken a gamble.
It seemed he had bet correctly, so now, he only worried about what might have already befallen him in the future, with each step leading him closer to that predetermined fate.
"You think I can travel through time? I definitely can’t run into the future to change your destiny," Chen Ke said.
"I know, but you’re far better than the Administration Bureau’s agents. And your Spiritual Power... even without saying, I know it’s unrestricted, doesn’t need to discharge, and lacks the vulnerable one-month period. It makes you the best bodyguard," Li Moyang said.
"I’m not your bodyguard," Chen Ke shook his head.
"Of course... I was just making a comparison. I consider you a friend and I hope you can do the same," Li Moyang said.
"I can’t consider you a friend, Li Moyang—you are a businessman, how many doctoral degrees do you have? And I’m just an assassin," Chen Ke said.
"There’s not much difference between you and me. Wealth, intelligence, social status... these things aren’t important. There are only two kinds of people in this world, those who are called by destiny and all the rest," Li Moyang said with profound meaning as he looked at Chen Ke.
"Called by destiny..." Chen Ke mused.
"Fate chose me, Chen Ke. Li Moyang died four years ago. I’m just playing the part of Li Moyang’s shell. All that’s left in my heart is revenge. But for those four years, I had no idea where to point my gun. Now I know. It’s not the Administration Bureau, not the superheroes, but the Spiritual Energy. I can see that you too are chosen by some destiny, Chen Ke. Tell me, what’s in your heart?" Li Moyang asked.
Chen Ke looked at Li Moyang and replied, "My heart holds a gun."
Li Moyang clapped Chen Ke on the shoulder, gazing out at the lush green lawn, and said, "That’s a good metaphor. I can see your determination. One day..." He looked back at Chen Ke. "One day, the bullet in your heart will fire and hit the mark."
"Let’s hope," Chen Ke said.
"Wander around the mansion if you like, and meanwhile check if any of the renovation workers are slacking off," Li Moyang said with a smile before turning to leave.
The estate was undergoing extensive renovation in preparation for the auction. Pankia was dealing with the Lescott Spirit Company’s acquisition matters through the internet and phone from a room on the third floor and was also overseeing the progress of materials to be used in the auction.
Meanwhile, Li Moyang locked himself in the cellar, busy with who knows what; the mansion blocked Spiritual Vision, so Chen Ke had no way of knowing what Li Moyang was doing.
A few workers brushed past; it was already the third day of waiting. Chen Ke would visit the estate daily to check on the progress. He and Pankia didn’t have much to talk about, and whenever the two met alone, it was somewhat awkward.
Pankia knew some things about the foundation. At first, Chen Ke thought he might be able to get some information out of him, but unfortunately, his knowledge was also very limited.
Chen Ke stood on the second-floor terrace, looking down at the estate’s courtyard. Gardeners were trimming the lawn, installing fences, and others were repairing a fountain.
Someone hugged Chen Ke from behind.
"Sleery?" Chen Ke turned around and pushed her away slightly.
"Still undecided?" Sleery asked. She was wearing a jacket, a purple crop top, and a short black skirt, looking up at Chen Ke.
"I’ve told you three times it’s not going to happen," Chen Ke said.
"Then I’ll ask again tomorrow," Sleery replied.
Chen Ke sighed.
"If you really didn’t care about me, then why did you come to save me that night?" Sleery asked.
"Because I wanted to be a good person," Chen Ke said earnestly.
"You play the good guy pretty hard," Sleery laughed.
"I go hard every day," Chen Ke laughed too.
"Oh, is that so? There’s a room back there... I’d like to see how hard you can be," Sleery said.
"No, you don’t," Chen Ke shook his head.
"Chen Ke, if you hadn’t come that day, I wouldn’t be standing here. In a sense, you gave me my life," Sleery said.
"So, you just want to thank me?" Chen Ke asked.
"No, I want more," Sleery’s smile held a deeper meaning as she grabbed Chen Ke’s hand and placed it on her stomach. "I want you to leave something inside me."
"Sleery, I’m not interested in you. Saving you was just for fun, like you said, your life is given by me. If you keep bothering me, I won’t mind taking it back," Chen Ke said.
