Chapter 516: The Power of Rejection

Chapter 516: Chapter 516: The Power of Rejection

Chen Ke grasped Lucina’s hand, feeling the temperature in his palm slowly vanish. Lucina also sensed something—she frowned and seemed about to pull her hand back.

"What’s wrong? Do you feel anything?" Chen Ke asked.

He had never handed over the Inheritance to someone else before, so he was unsure what would happen next.

"It’s a bit hot... it’s like holding a scalding roasted chestnut," Lucina replied.

"You’ve eaten roasted chestnuts before?" Chen Ke laughed.

"They’re sold in Chinatown over in Norton City," Lucina said, her worried gaze shifting to their clasped hands as if the searing pain was becoming unbearable.

"What’s it feel like now?" Seeing Lucina’s concern, Chen Ke asked with care.

"It’s getting hotter, Chen Ke. What is this?" Lucina said.

"This is... a type of magic power from another era that can turn you into the Flame Witch," Chen Ke replied.

"Sounds... good? So, I can spit fire then?" Lucina asked.

"Where do you plan to spit it from?" Chen Ke chuckled.

Flushing, Lucina punched Chen Ke in the chest, said, "Careful, or I might burn through you."

A tuft of ash floated up from Chen Ke’s arm, winding around Lucina’s forearm—it was An Helei’s ash.

"Ash of An Helei has departed."

A line of tiny words appeared at the corner of Chen Ke’s eye; her ashes harbored the Witch’s power, and now Chen Ke passed this power to Lucina, thus losing the ashes.

"It’s so hot... I feel like I’m about to catch fire..." Lucina gasped, her right arm manifesting red tattoo-like lines that flickered between light and dark, sparking tiny flames.

"It’s getting hotter, Chen Ke. How much longer?" Lucina asked anxiously as her arm seemed ablaze.

"Don’t worry, it feels like it’s almost there," Chen Ke shook his head, holding Lucina’s hand tightly; he felt her palm become soft, breaking with a touch like tofu.

Lucina’s right arm did catch on fire, and Chen Ke wasn’t sure if this was normal, but Lucina couldn’t take it and pulled her hand away.

"Fire! Fuck! It’s on fire!" Lucina exclaimed in panic, pulling her hand back from Chen Ke’s grip, her palm morphing into a flame, wavering in the air. Her right arm became a gel-like substance, something between muscle and energy.

This was not how Chen Ke remembered the Flame Witch.

Neither Faralis nor An Helei turned into slime when they were engulfed in flames.

"Oh my god, Chen Ke... put it out! Hurry!" Lucina flailed her right arm, attempting to extinguish the fire, but the more she flustered, the more the gel-like arm deformed, melting like burnt caramel.

"Wait, don’t panic, give me your hand," Chen Ke was panicked too; he didn’t want to end up killing Lucina and quickly reached for her burning arm.

When his fingers touched Lucina’s arm, it felt like grabbing a red-hot iron bar, yet it was so soft to squeeze. The gel transformation was spreading to her chest and head as she leaned on the railing, contemplating a leap into the sea.

The power of the fire began shifting back to Chen Ke.

His scorched palm, regenerated under the influence of life, suddenly became fire-resistant. The gel transformation on Lucina also began reversing.

"Obtained relic: Ash of An Helei."

"Obtained Flame Witch Inheritance."

Two lines of small text floated into Chen Ke’s vision, returning Lucina’s body to normal.

The ash emerged from her right arm, twining around Chen Ke’s right arm before dissolving into nothingness. Chen Ke let go of her hand, looking down at his palm, which was bright red.

"Huff, huff..." Lucina clutched her right arm, looking fearfully at Chen Ke.

"I didn’t know it would turn out this way," Chen Ke explained.

"Have you ever used this thing before?" Lucina asked.

"Of course not, it’s not meant for unlimited use. I gave it to you; now I don’t have it anymore," Chen Ke said.

"Then why didn’t you become that thing yourself?" Lucina asked.

"That thing is only for women to use," Chen Ke replied.

"Oh my God, I don’t think this thing turns women into witches," Lucina shook her head, "it just seems to burn people to death."

"It can reconstruct a person’s body. Maybe the process just now was normal?" Chen Ke said.

"Maybe it burns people to death first and then turns into the burned one... Anyway, you guys don’t know," Lucina was still cautious.

Chen Ke didn’t speak. Lucina’s theory might be right.

"I give up, Chen Ke, keep that thing away from me," Lucina sighed.

Chen Ke shrugged and watched as Lucina walked to the car. He didn’t deny the danger of the object; after all, reality wasn’t like playing a game, the cost of gaining power was unknown to everyone.

"If I find a new way for you to fight those things, I will tell you," Chen Ke said.

"Perhaps. Right now, I just want to take a shower and then get some sleep. Hall’s wound also needs redressing." Lucina opened the car door and climbed in after speaking.

Chen Ke sighed as a flame ignited in his palm. With a pinch, ash burst out from between his fingers.

The car started again and proceeded along the highway. To the right of the road was an open woodland, dense dark green trees flapped in the wind hundreds of meters away from the highway.

"Look... that car ahead." Chen Ke saw a car stopped on the side of the road ahead, it was red and looked familiar.

"Hm? What’s wrong?" Lucina removed her headphones and poked her head out the window. One glance, and she recognized it as her own car.

"That’s my car!" Lucina said.

"Didn’t you lend it to Diana..." Chen Ke frowned, sensing that things were not good.

The car braked hard, awakening Hall, who scratched his head and looked on as Chen Ke and Lucina quickly got out and ran to the roadside.

The red sports car’s doors and body were detached and showed signs of burning. The underside of the car was blackened, the red paint scorched to a near bright yellow. The driver’s seat’s leather and the steering wheel were also damaged.

There were no signs of impact around the car, nor any tire marks from sudden braking on the road; the explosion had occurred after the car stopped.

"It wasn’t an ordinary flame; it was some sort of special bomb that doesn’t take lives," Chen Ke guessed.

"Did the corporation put a bomb in my car?" Lucina frowned.

"Not necessarily... If it was the corporation, you would have been in trouble long ago, not after lending the car to Diana," Chen Ke said.

He was becoming anxious. Diana must have been abducted. With limited clues, the fact that the car had exploded after stopping suggested Diana had realized there was a bomb inside.

Since the bomb was planted in Lucina’s car, it proved that their original target was Lucina.

"I think I know who it is," Chen Ke said.

"Who?" Lucina asked.

"Yasla. They were targeting you, but Diana was the one in the car," Chen Ke looked at Lucina.

"Will they kill her?" Lucina asked.

Chen Ke did not answer as he glanced at the bloodstains on the nearby guardrail.

He vaulted over the guardrail to find a trail of sliding marks down the slope leading into the woods. He saw various long, slash marks in the mud.

Soft mud had left behind many footprints, and there was a blue Holy Diamond lying in a small puddle. Chen Ke squatted down, picked up the Holy Diamond, and thought for a second before a Longsword appeared in his hand.

[Butcher of Balwic]

[Durability: Poor]

[Executioner: Easier to behead humanoid creatures.]

[Limb Hacker: Easier to sever the limbs of humanoid creatures.]

This was a Holy Relic that demanded high swordsmanship skills... Although its special effects were sharp, it would be difficult to utilize without mastery in European swordsmanship.

Some things had changed, Chen Ke could guess.

In the altered present, Yasla had failed to capture Lucina, but Lucina’s fate had fallen upon Diana.
