Chapter 434: Chapter 434 Flame Enchantment
Chen Ke struggled to his feet from the floor, the long corridor behind him lined with many windows.
The sunlight streamed through the windows onto the floor, which would have seemed quite cozy if not for the eerie incidents occurring in this house.
But as soon as he looked ahead, the scenery drastically changed; the corridor in front of Chen Ke also had rows and rows of windows.
However, outside it was gloomy and rainy, occasionally lit by lightning that streaked across the night sky, leaving a fleeting white shadow on the ground.
There was another letter on the floor. Chen Ke walked over, picked it up, broke the red wax seal, and pulled out the letter inside.
"I can hardly believe it—Miss Katherine has accepted my courtship. My friends, this is all thanks to you! Of course, a larger reason lies in my personal charm. An outstanding doctor and the daughter of a cultured businessman—it’s a match made in heaven! I can’t wait to step into the sacred hall of matrimony with her!"
This letter seemed to have been written after the last, when Mox, still merely a common doctor at the time, had finally won Katherine’s affection and was planning their marriage.
And Katherine was just a businessman’s daughter after all. In the 19th century, women had the right to inherit property, but in that era, for women to smoothly inherit family fortunes was extremely difficult.
And then...? What happened between them that turned this house into its current state?
These issues were of no concern to Chen Ke; he only wanted to retrieve his Holy Diamond.
The gun barrel oozed blood, dripping onto the floor. Chen Ke wiped it off his body and then proceeded towards the end of the corridor.
Silently he walked for close to 10 minutes. He had tried using an axe and a gun to smash the window glass but failed; the windows were like Fan Hede’s air walls.
But this time, Chen Ke could still see the view outside the windows. It was a cemetery, with raindrops pounding on the glass.
Occasionally, lightning fell, and with the white flashes, Chen Ke could see a woman in a white gauze dress standing distantly among a pile of graves, silently staring out the window.
There were no informational pop-ups in Chen Ke’s vision, and he wasn’t sure if she had noticed him, but so far, both had been unharmed by each other.
As he walked farther, another letter appeared on the corridor floor. Chen Ke picked up the envelope, took out the letter, and unfolded it.
"Today is a bittersweet day for me. Through continual advancement in medical practices, Queen Victoria recognized my value to the Langdon community and bestowed upon me the honor of a lifetime baron. It is a joyous event, yet on the same day, my beloved Katherine fell ill with a very rare disease, and even I had to seek help from friends within the medical circle to research it. My dear Katherine, I will surely cure you."
This letter seemed more like a diary, chronicling Mox’s moments with Katherine, from their meeting to her illness. Chen Ke tucked the letter away and continued forward.
Finally, at the end of the corridor, there was a mahogany door making a thudding sound as if something was trying to come out from the other side.
Chen Ke used his Spiritual Vision to scan and saw a human outline inside, its limbs twisted into horrifying angles, being slammed forcefully against the door.
"A companion of Axe Bro?" Chen Ke wondered.
"Thud, thud! Bang!" Coincidentally, just at that moment, the red wooden door was smashed open, and a person in a brown trench coat was flung out.
The person rolled twice on the ground, dropping a revolver and a walking stick. Chen Ke stepped back, peering into the door—inside was pitch-black, and no other outlines were visible with his Spiritual Vision.
The thing inside didn’t seem to be human.
Chen Ke aimed his 67-style pistol at the dark doorway, slowly moving towards the man on the ground.
He wasn’t dead yet, but he was extremely weak, blood oozing from his nose and mouth, his tricorn hat scattered to one side, limbs broken and lying at odd angles on the floor.
"Go back... go back and find..."
The man, in pain, twitched, his golden curls stained with blood, and by appearance, he was about the same age as Chen Ke.
"What’s inside?" Chen Ke squatted next to the man and asked.
"I’m no match..." the man said in anguish.
Chen Ke searched the man, lifted the hem of his trench coat, and saw three vials of blood hanging from his belt. He also picked up a cane nearby, at the top of its handle there was a small hole filled with blood.
This blood was crucial for ordinary weapons to harm spiritual monsters and was certainly not human blood. If regular human blood could work miracles, there was no need for the Administration Bureau or spiritual ability users in 2009.
He pocketed two of the blood vials, unscrewed one, and poured the blood over the axe. The blood slowly absorbed into the axe, emitting a faint red glow.
Chen Ke didn’t plan to pick up and use the cane; it seemed only useful for stabbing and not designed as a weapon, making it difficult for anyone but a Secret Keeper to maximize its power.
The axe was different, strong enough, a frenzied chopping would suffice.
"Uh..." The Secret Keeper groaned, spitting out a mouthful of blood, eyes rolling back, face hitting the floor as he passed out.
Ahead was the only way, Chen Ke, carrying the axe in one hand and the 67-style pistol in the other, walked into the pitch-black room. With a "bang," the door shut behind him.
It was pitch dark all around, he couldn’t see his hand before him, and he felt something sticky and mushy underfoot, like stepping on flesh, and he could also hear chewing sounds from the four corners of the room.
These chewing sounds were mixed with heavy gasps, as if whatever it was, was very hungry, though it was unclear what it was eating. Chen Ke cautiously moved towards the center of the room, the sticky flesh sticking to the soles of his shoes, making a disgusting squishing sound.
It seemed to hear his footsteps, and something in the room began to move, like something long sliding on the bloodied flesh, sounding slick.
"It really stinks..." Chen Ke followed the sound, slowly looking to the right, unable to see in the darkness but could still discern the direction by the sound.
He put away his pistol with a click, stretching the axe into a long handle, rubbing his hand over the surface of the axe blade, smearing it with An Helei’s ashes, sparking flames.
The axe caught fire, like a large torch, with the blade coated in the magic flames of An Helei’s flame magic.
The fire lit up the space around Chen Ke, within the dim flickering range of the fire, a white, slug-like creature with a bloated belly scurried towards a dark corner.
Chen Ke gripped the handle of the axe with both hands, feeling a fishy breeze gushing towards him.
"Hoo hoo hoo!"
Without looking, Chen Ke swiftly sidestepped to dodge, seeing several red tentacles reach towards where he had just stood.
He had barely steadied himself when he swung the axe in a counter-attack.
