Chapter 435: Chapter 435 Infinite Space
The axe, set ablaze, chopped into the slick tentacles, unexpectedly severing them all.
The blade clanged against the ground, slicing an opening through the blood-covered flesh on the floor.
Beneath the glow of firelight, half of the monster’s face became visible—an utterly revolting, half-human, half-insect visage.
Its swollen cheeks featured six acid-dripping holes; its mouth had mutated into a needle-like proboscis; the whites of its eyes were pitch-black, transformed into compound eyes.
Its lower half was completely that of a fat, white maggot, with numerous tiny holes in its abdomen, oozing a mixture of white and red pus.
The blood-red tentacles had extended from slits at either side of this oversized maggot’s waist. As Chen Ke severed a bunch, they retracted, and the creature’s waist seemed zipped up, capable of opening and closing at will.
"You sure are ugly..." Chen Ke spat out a mouthful of saliva. This white maggot was disgusting to look at, reminiscent of a cockroach’s nymph.
The fat insect quickly withdrew into the darkness, hiding from the range of Chen Ke’s fire, attempting to launch an attack from the shadows.
Chen Ke extended his right hand, causing the ashes of An Helei to flare up, and slowly the temperature around them began to rise.
The temperature swiftly escalated to 100 degrees. His skin felt like it was melting, his hair gave off the scent of scorching, and his eyes and mouth parched.
Without An Helei’s elegy, Chen Ke’s right palm was the only part of him able to withstand the scorching of Magic Flames.
The high temperature of 100 degrees caused the rotten flesh on the floor to emit a nauseating burnt smell; the blood began to steam, sizzling as it did not bear the pleasant aroma of barbecued meat, but rather a greasy, sickeningly sweet scent.
The wooden structures around him caught fire, with red sparks tumbling along the edges of window frames and tables. The fat insect, too, turned yellow and brittle under the intense heat, writhing on the ground.
The white belly of the fat maggot curled up in a corner, the creature naturally afraid of fire due to its hollow structure. Ignited by the high heat, its insect face burst with fluids as flames shot from the slits where its tentacles had stretched out.
Charred by 100-degree heat, the soft white belly split open, and a mix of green and yellow juices boiled over, spilling onto the floor.
Chen Ke extinguished the fire, and his injuries began to heal at a visibly fast rate. He snapped the scorched axe into a shorter handle and, gathering his strength in one hand, delivered a heavy chop directly onto the bursting face of the insect.
"Thoroughly dead." Chen Ke pulled the axe from the insect’s face and wiped it on the ground.
The monsters in this mansion were quite feeble, but for the Secret Keeper, they were still formidable; mainly because people of this era had yet to harness the method of using Spiritual Energy.
However, the blood they used greatly intrigued Chen Ke.
The insect’s corpse slowly dissolved, and even the flesh under Chen Ke’s feet began to migrate toward the spot where the creature lay. The temperature inside the house remained elevated—had Chen Ke been susceptible to physical sensations, he might have been overwhelmed by the heat to the point of stripping his clothes off.
As the flesh receded, the insect turned into a cloud of ash, refreshing the entire room; outside the window, the afternoon sunlight streamed in, and the sounds of carriages passing by were audible.
Chen Ke approached the window to look outside. Below was the normal street scene, with people hurrying along and factory transport carts hauling goods past the front door.
"Am I out?" Chen Ke thought to himself, wondering if he had finally escaped the secret realm and returned to the normal house.
No, that’s not right; it was night when he first entered.
At that moment, the pale face of a woman suddenly appeared at the window, startling him.
It was the same woman who had appeared behind Chen Ke just as he had entered the mansion! Her skin was extremely white, her limbs wrapped in a thick layer of blood plasma, blood oozing from every orifice, her eyes wide as she stared at Chen Ke.
"Fuck!" Chen Ke stepped back several paces before the woman disappeared in the blink of an eye.
Was it an Illusion Technique? Or perhaps something else? He remembered the scene when he entered West Gold Building for the second time, and the sea within Opportunity City that was manipulated by deities.
On second thought, this house was somewhat different from West Gold Building. Although Illusion Techniques could simulate real tactile sensations, the mansion of Mox was more extreme.
It was more akin to the situation of the inner sea. These monsters and the current state of the house weren’t deceptive magic; they were genuinely existing. The monsters and the state of the house were all real.
Chen Ke felt this way because of the changes that occurred in the room when he used An Helei’s Ash.
If it were an illusion, the things that changed should not have been affected—the things that were burning should be those that originally existed.
After all, Magic Flames wouldn’t be influenced by Illusion Techniques.
What kind of thing could create such an illusion? Chen Ke felt uneasy. Could it be something as powerful as the deities in the inner sea?
In the center of the room, another letter appeared. Chen Ke walked over and picked it up. What could it be this time?
"Research on Katherine’s disease has finally yielded some clues. At first, I thought Katherine had some kind of skin disease, but now I finally understand that her symptoms of pain sensation loss come from a disorder in her nervous system. Katherine’s pain nerves are more sensitive and intense than those of other people, leading even the slightest touch to cause her severe injury... Oh, this is nothing less than a devil’s curse!"
Chen Ke put the envelope in his pocket; if he wasn’t wrong, that woman must have been Katherine. She actually was quite beautiful... But the more beautiful a woman, the more terrifying she becomes once mutated.
Chen Ke suddenly wondered if he had been deceived by Sean—perhaps Sean already knew about the Baron Mox’s mansion becoming abnormal and had sent him here on a suicide mission...
In such a situation, what chance did Sean have to give diamonds?
"You’re going to regret this, Mr. Sean, you’ll regret it," Chen Ke said.
This house was now involved with the Secret Keeper Organization. In 1859, their role and function should not have differed from the Administration Bureau. They hunted monsters with blood, and if Holy Relics emerged, would there be a specialized department to contain and control them?
Chen Ke walked to the door opposite the window. With one kick, he forced the door open, and a familiar corridor appeared again. The space felt like a linear game—finish one level, pass a segment as if loading a new scene.
Feeling the gun to be of little use, he carried only an axe and walked forward. Entering this corridor, the paradox of the space unfolded before Chen Ke’s eyes.
He had entered the corridor from a door opposite the window, yet there were still windows on the left side of the corridor. Chen Ke walked over to the window to look outside; it was the same street he had seen before.
Chen Ke couldn’t help but start running forward. Although he hated to admit it, the situation here was making him restless. He had a feeling that if he didn’t kill that woman, he might have to spend a lifetime fighting monsters in this mansion.
