Chapter 338: Chapter 338: Containing the Out-of-Control Situation

Chen Ke placed the paper cup filled with blue ink on the seat beside him and carefully maneuvered around the people who looked normal but were actually not, making his way to the elevator.

He pressed the elevator button, and at that moment, an icy pre-recorded voice broadcasted in the lobby.

"Warning, warning, containment measures have failed, please quickly proceed to the nearest safety capsules for refuge, the Administration Bureau will intervene in 24 minutes..."

minutes... So soon? Chen Ke was momentarily distracted, and the elevator had already arrived. He stepped into the elevator, glanced at the floor panel, and pressed the button for the lowest level: -5.

Meanwhile, in the interrogation room of the Opportunity City Administration Bureau.

Diana sat in a chair, her hands cuffed behind her, observing the Asian woman in front of her, contemplating when she had seen her before.

That woman had just slapped Diana’s face several times, and now her lips were bleeding, her cheek felt burning, probably turning dark red; yet the questions she asked were completely incomprehensible to Diana.

"My patience is limited, Diana. I know you want to help him keep secrets, everyone I’ve seen is just like you. He indeed has charm, makes people trust him, but... he really is a very dangerous person, tell us, what did you tell him on the phone? Where is he?" the woman asked.

Diana spat the bloody saliva from her mouth onto the ground, licked her lips with her tongue, and sighed deeply, "I don’t care where you’ve popped up from, ma’am... I am an agent of the Administration Bureau, my impression of Chen Ke is completely different from what you’ve described. You’ve either mistaken someone else, or you have an ulterior motive... Ugh!"

Before she could finish speaking, Diana’s abdomen was brutally punched by the woman, a hot stream surging up her throat with a sour taste. It took her a long time to swallow.

The woman suddenly kicked Diana in the chest, flipping her over chair and all onto the floor, and then stepped on her collarbone with her high-heeled shoe.

"You have been brainwashed by him, Diana. You haven’t realized that you are helping him destroy the future of humanity," the woman said angrily.

At that moment, the interrogation room door was knocked on and then pushed open a bit, with the chairman standing outside.

"What?" the woman asked.

"We’ve found Chen Ke," the chairman said.

Diana lying on the floor closed her eyes.

"Where is he?" the woman asked as she and the chairman proceeded down the corridor towards the CPA Building’s intelligence center.

"This afternoon around 2 pm, Chen Ke filled out a form at the Norton City branch of the Spiritual Ability Research Institute to visit a female doctor researching the Great Void," the chairman answered.

"That must be him... He must be seeking some way to freely traverse through time, but in your era, it seems there is no technology for Time Observation," the woman pondered.

"How significant is the difference between Time Travel and Observation?" the chairman curiously asked.

"Observation precedes travel, but without the Foundation’s clearance, I cannot disclose much to you, in short, your era is not yet ready to control such technology," the woman said.

"There’s also bad news, a containment breach has occurred at the research institute... it is now under lockdown, and the Norton City Administration Bureau has responded," the chairman reminded.

"It’s very likely part of his plan; maybe he’s sensed my arrival... What’s the fastest way from Opportunity City to Norton City?" the woman inquired.

"If I may ask brazenly... Since you can time travel, why can’t you foresee Chen Ke’s actions and stop him beforehand?" the chairman asked.

"Time travel isn’t as simple as you think, I need to get to Norton City immediately. Can you help me with the transport arrangements?" the woman asked, seemingly unwilling to answer the chairman’s question.

"I will arrange a helicopter to take you to the airport, and then a private plane to Norton City," the chairman said.

"Very well, remember to tell the action team over there," the woman said, "I don’t want any unpleasant encounters with them."

"Ding-dong..."

Underground level five.

Chen Ke slowly stepped out of the elevator and entered a spacious area. Perhaps because it was underground, a strong oppressive sensation assaulted him through the walls.

In the brightly lit hall, the reception area was deserted. The marble screen wall bore the circular emblem of the institute with a line of English below, which translated to "Special Mutated Entity Containment and Control Unit."

The voice inside his head sounded again, this time clearer.

"12, 7. Release, companion."

Chen Ke took a deep breath and ignored the voice. His sole purpose was to find Wang Ailin; best not to provoke strange things when you can—better to do less than more.

He walked past the screen wall and found himself in a corridor lined with offices. Through the glass walls, he could see that the offices were well-lit but empty.

Computers on the desks were still on. Chen Ke tried to open a glass door to take a closer look, but as soon as he approached, the smart lock at the door issued a "beep beep" alarm sound.

Without a pass card, it seemed he couldn’t get through the door.

Of course, Chen Ke wasn’t going to look for a pass card. He snapped his fingers at the glass wall, and with a "bang," it shattered, the noise stark against the quiet surroundings.

Chen Ke walked in and approached a computer, hoping to find some clues. However, the computers were all locked. He then turned his attention to a filing rack nearby.

Within a thick pile of documents were stories about strange occurrences all over the United Federation.

Talking cats and dogs, people turned into toads, investigators from the future... After skimming through, Chen Ke felt it was a waste of time and put the pile of files down.

He stepped out through the broken glass wall and proceeded deeper, pushing open the door at the end of the hallway, Chen Ke found himself in a vast underground space that was beyond words.

The place was pitch-black, with only the incandescent lights regularly spaced along the walls illuminating small areas like tiny white stars in a dark abyss.

Chen Ke activated his Spiritual Vision and saw many human silhouettes floating in the darkness; these must be the underground staff...

Chen Ke had no idea whether they were dead or alive, nor did he know if Wang Ailin was among these people.

A long stairway hung above this abyss, leading to a massive black iron sphere at the center of the space. The iron ball’s surface was continuously flickering red lights, like a perpetually running server.

Chen Ke gauged the size of the iron sphere to be as big as a building above ground.

He followed the stairs slowly to the entrance of the iron ball, the journey somewhat daunting as if about to enter another world. The numbers "12, 7" kept repeating in his mind, perhaps a code for a certain room.

When Chen Ke entered the interior of the iron sphere, he discovered it consisted of concentric circles, arranged from top to bottom like a honeycomb, with many rooms built within. The circular corridor where Chen Ke stood was about the same size as the outside hall and also contained several offices.

Using his Spiritual Vision, he quickly scanned the area; hundreds of human silhouettes filled the space, indicating a considerable number of people.

Chen Ke heard the sound of someone hitting their head against the wall and the light patter of footsteps. The researchers seemed to be out of their wits, and Chen Ke didn’t want any conflict with them, so he carefully avoided them, skirting along the walls of the corridor.

That’s when he spotted a door ahead, marked "0451."
