Chapter 337: Chapter 337 Incomprehensible
About fifteen minutes later, a white bus drove up outside the building. There were no staff members in the lobby, which was empty, and Chen Ke stood up, looking around uncertainly about what to do next.
He heard someone crying and followed the sound, which came from an office behind the reception desk.
He walked around to the back of the desk and looked toward a row of offices. He randomly chose one and knocked on the door.
The door opened slightly with just one knock, not locked.
Through the crack in the door, he saw a staff member with arms wrapped around their knees, crouched into a circle in the middle of the office.
One of them lifted their head and looked at him; it was actually the female supervisor, her eyes red and tears streaming down her cheeks.
"I..." Chen Ke took a deep breath, his right hand ready to summon the Holy Relics.
"Mr. Chen, the bus, get on, it’s yours, has arrived." The female supervisor spoke through her sobs.
"Thank you," Chen Ke nodded, gently closing the door.
He sensed that something had happened here, some very bad things, possibly related to the voices in his head.
But Chen Ke had seen such things often; he was there to find Wang Ailin, and he wouldn’t back down.
Chen Ke stepped out of the building and into the white bus.
This bus was a luxury coach, impeccably clean, its silver outlines blazing white in the sunlight. Chen Ke guessed it was used exclusively within the research area to transport researchers.
He boarded through the open door and saw the driver on the driver’s seat, dressed in blue work clothes and wearing a driver’s hat. His expression was twitching, alternating between laughter and calmness, his head slightly shaking.
"Sit, wait, sit, wait, sit, wait," said the driver.
Chen Ke took a seat in the back, keeping as far from the driver as possible.
The white bus turned around on the square and then drove onto the lawn, tires rolling over drainage ditches and barriers, jolting sharply; Chen Ke could even hear the sound of stones scraping the chassis.
He steadied himself on the front seat handle and looked out the window; the vehicle was driving fast across the deep green lawn, straight toward a certain direction, seemingly with the accelerator floored.
"I/you=partner, open/merge, partner."
Strange voices were again transmitted into Chen Ke’s mind, calling to him. He didn’t know what it was, but he was sure it was nothing good.
Many horror stories started with such a plot, where a character mysteriously hears phantom voices, follows them, and ends up in tragedy.
Chen Ke pulled out the gun he kept within his coat. He didn’t know what had happened in this research area, but the people inside were likely in grave danger.
But the Spiritual Ability Research Institute, being a national-level research organization, should have its self-defense and counteracting measures; they might have already taken action.
Now Chen Ke feared only one thing: that Wang Ailin might have died inside.
The white bus airborne a short distance again, the chassis clanging hard against the ground. Chen Ke opened the window and saw that the bus was heading straight for a wall.
That was the research area’s perimeter wall.
He ran to the driver’s seat, only to find the driver smiling with blood running out of his seven orifices, dead.
"Damn it..." Chen Ke cursed under his breath, snapping his fingers toward the door with his right hand. A powerful force flung the door open, and he jumped out, rolling several times before stopping.
"Boom!"
Chen Ke got up, his wounds quickly healing. The white bus slammed into the wall, making a hole in it, then continued forward, crashing into a fountain in the plaza, flying sideways through the air and tumbling across several meters before coming to a halt.
He dusted himself off and stretched his limbs, then crawled through the hole in the wall.
"Down/below, down."
Chen Ke tried to ignore the voices in his head. He took out his cellphone and dialed Wang Ailin’s number.
"Beep beep... beep beep..."
The busy tone signaled she might be in another call. Perhaps Wang Ailin was also trying to call him at that moment? Or was she just desperately calling for help?
Chen Ke looked up at the tall twin-tower building in front of him, which likely had over sixty floors. The fountain in the plaza had shattered into pieces, and in the distance, the white bus lay on its side, leaking fuel all over.
"Beep beep beep..."
The phone rang. Chen Ke took it out and saw it was Wang Ailin. He hurriedly answered.
"Hello? Wang Ailin?" responded Chen Ke.
"Chen Ke, fusion, with me, partner, Chen Ke, below, below, partner..." Wang Ailin’s words were somewhat strange.
"Where are you?" asked Chen Ke.
"Below, below, below..." Wang Ailin said.
"Which below... that building?" asked Chen Ke.
"Round, containment, below, partner..." Wang Ailin said, her voice dull and emotionless.
"I’ll come for you," Chen Ke said.
His greatest fear had happened, the people here seemed to be controlled by something, uttering only fragmented phrases, just like the voice in his mind.
Whatever this thing was, its purpose was to have Chen Ke find it and, moreover, to merge with Chen Ke... It sounded kind of gay.
"You wait, wait till I find you, when I find you I’ll kill you," Chen Ke muttered to himself.
Wang Ailin had just said three words: round, below, containment. Without thinking, he knew that Wang Ailin and that thing were probably together...
What did round refer to? The shape of a building? Below was easy to understand, under that building, and the meaning of containment goes without saying, this thing was locked up...
The institute would not lock something underground for no reason, this thing must be extremely dangerous...
With no additional clues, Chen Ke looked toward the lobby of a nearby building. His Spiritual Vision scanned, and he could see the outlines of many staff members inside.
He pushed the door open and saw more than a dozen men and women in white coats busy working inside the lobby, looking utterly normal, their expressions not twisted like the driver’s had been.
This place... unaffected? Chen Ke holstered his gun, standing alone in the lobby, feeling somewhat out of place.
Then, a female researcher walked over, smiling at him, and said, "Mr. Chen, hello, please have a seat."
With that, she made a welcoming gesture.
Chen Ke shook his head, looking suspiciously at the woman, feeling something was off.
"Would you like something to drink?" the female researcher continued.
"I..." Just as Chen Ke spoke, she ran off on her own accord.
"This is strange..." Chen Ke muttered to himself.
In this seemingly calm environment, things were actually not normal...
Thinking this, the female researcher ran back over, holding a paper cup.
"Take a break, Mr. Chen." She handed the cup to Chen Ke, a friendly smile on her face.
Chen Ke took the cup, which was filled to the brim with deep blue ink.
"Drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink." It was as if she were stuck in a loop, the female researcher kept repeating the word.
Chen Ke held the cup when suddenly, a loud explosion came from behind.
"Bang!"
It was the overturned bus that had exploded... The blast wave rattled the glass doors, and a rubber tire thudded against the glass door, pushing it half-open.
People in the hall continued their separate tasks, the woman in front of him still repeating the earlier word.
"Drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink..."
"Hold on," Chen Ke extended his hand, making a stopping gesture.
The female researcher looked at him with a smile.
"Round, below, containment," Chen Ke said.
The female researcher still smiled, but her smile took on a different meaning as she turned and pointed towards the elevator on the distant wall.
"Below, below, below," the female researcher said.
