Chapter 321 Dark and Cold
Chapter 321: Chapter 321 Dark and Cold
Laura clung tightly to the base of the crane arm, waiting alongside Nathan for the miracle to happen, when suddenly a tentacle slid into the sea from the deck.
She knew that Chen Ke’s actions below had taken effect, so she struggled to stand up and rushed to the stern to look into the sea.
All she saw was the black ocean roaring with waves, the ship stuck in place as if belted down, at the mercy of the crashing waves. Suddenly, a muffled sound came from beneath the sea’s surface, and Laura saw a flash of blue light surge from the depths.
Next, the storm abruptly stopped, and the vast sea slowly returned to calm, with all the tentacles on the deck also slipping into the water.
"Did he make it?" Nathan asked.
"He did, he made it," said Laura, while running back and forth around the railing, hoping to see Chen Ke surface.
"It seems he really does have some skills. I’m telling you, that thing isn’t as simple as just a squid..." Nathan’s expression was complex, tinged with skepticism.
"Wait, let’s not talk about that for now... Why hasn’t he come up yet?" Laura ignored Nathan, instead growing more concerned about the situation below.
Hearing this, Nathan also hurried to the other side of the ship to search for traces of Chen Ke.
At that moment, Conrad surprisingly came down from the bridge, limping. He held a white towel to his head, covered in blood.
"Where’s Chen Ke?" Conrad looked around and asked.
"I think... he’s still in the sea, and he might not be able to surface just yet," Nathan replied while looking overboard.
While Laura anxiously searched, she pulled out a high-powered flashlight from nowhere and rhythmically shone it across the water’s surface.
Some of the crew carried bodies out of the cabin and began to clean the cabin; suddenly, blood flowed like rivers on the deck, the mix of entrails and the stench of blood becoming nauseating.
The sky was still dark, but after the storm ceased, the moon reappeared, and its white light blanketed the sea, bringing a moment of serene tranquility all around.
After the sea calmed, paired with the peaceful moonlight, it gave the surreal illusion as if the ship were still anchored in a harbor.
But Conrad was acutely aware that the ship was still in danger. He looked up at the constellations in the sky, then at the blood on the deck, estimating the losses from this voyage.
"We need to leave here as soon as possible," Conrad told them, before turning to head back to the bridge.
"Wait a second, what do you mean?" Laura was taken aback, then suddenly grasped something, and hurried over to grab Conrad’s hand.
"Do you mean we should set sail now?" Laura asked.
"Yes, he’s already dead. There’s no point in waiting here any longer," Conrad said.
"We should at least send a small boat to look for him! The sea is calm now; there’s no danger!" Laura said angrily.
"This area’s dangers don’t end with the storm, Miss Laura. Have you forgotten what just happened? Look at my ship! It’s as though we’ve been to Suss Bay!" Conrad frowned.
"Chen Ke helped us deal with the danger; we can’t just leave him behind," Nathan joined in.
"You folks must rarely sail. In my ten years at sea, not one person who jumped overboard in a storm has ever come back alive," Conrad stated.
Nathan had nothing to say, as he was sincerely aware of the danger of jumping into the sea in such circumstances.
"Without protective gear, without adequate warmth, and without even a rope tied to him, Miss Laura, Chen Ke has likely been dragged by the undertow to a depth of hundreds of meters by now. There’s no chance he survived, not to mention there’s a monster below," Conrad declared.
Laura ran out of words to say, and she looked to Nathan.
"He’s just a stranger; our bond hasn’t reached that level to waste time over... Besides, even if he is a Spiritual Ability User, what difference does it make? The sea doesn’t care who you are..." Conrad said.
"We can still take some action—he saved us. Look, your crew is still cleaning the cabins. All we need is a small boat and two people to dive down and have a look..." Nathan suggested tentatively.
"Are you insane!? Dive down? Half of the people on my ship are dead! I’m not letting anyone else go down, and besides..." Conrad said, leaning in closer to the two, his voice dropping to a whisper.
"...besides, you may not know... big trouble at sea, mutiny and whatnot, it’s not out of the question. Just observe my crew..." Conrad said, glancing over at the cabins.
Laura and Nathan followed Conrad’s gaze.
They saw crew members quietly discussing among themselves while cleaning up the bodies. Others pretended to scrub the deck but were actually huddled together, talking.
"Any group is not solid as iron; even sailors on a small vessel have their own schemes," Conrad remarked.
Laura and Nathan felt a heaviness sink into their hearts.
"If you want to reach your destination, then give me a hand, help me stabilize these crew members, and get the ship moving. Let’s leave this area of the sea as fast as we can," Conrad directed.
Laura closed her eyes, her face a medley of complex emotions, and Nathan also felt helpless. That’s just the way the real world works.
"Chen Ke was a brave man—I’ll remember him. He had courage, but that’s all there is to it," Conrad said, seeing their low spirits. He understood they were not the same sort of people as he was, not hardened by life, so he tried to console them.
"In this world, this is how the story of a hero ends, so we..." Conrad spoke but was cut off as another dull rumbling came from beneath the sea.
It was as if something was rushing up towards the surface at high speed; everyone on the ship watched curiously toward the water.
A burst of blue light suddenly shimmered beneath the water to the left of the ship. Then, a huge blue light cannon shot towards the sky, lifting a massive sheet of spray.
"Crack!"
The large light cannon, glimmering with a blue flame tail, flew toward the stars in the sky, then exploded into a mist of light high above.
"What was that?!" Conrad asked.
Laura, without saying a word, immediately ran to the crane at the stern of the ship and picked up a rope from the deck.
"Nathan, you know what I’m doing—quickly!" Laura said, tying the rope around her waist.
Nathan, intuitively understanding, rushed over as well, grabbed the other end of the rope, and climbed the crane.
"You better be sure it’s him! Otherwise, you’re just jumping to your deaths!" Conrad understood their intent and shouted.
Laura checked the rope tied around her waist and then turned to look at Nathan.
Nathan, holding the rope, had wrapped it around the crane a few times, then, bringing the rope back to the deck, tied it to the railing on the opposite side, and signaled Laura.
"Hope it’s long enough," Laura whispered to herself, and then, climbing the railing, she leaped into the dark sea below.
Chen Ke was floating in the pitch-black depths, attempting to swim toward what he thought was up, but after a long time, he had not reached the surface. Not daring to swim further, he tried a different direction.
The bubbles left from the burning ashes of An Helei gave no indication of direction, and his previous judgment had been wrong.
He felt panic. Just now, he had fired a ’spiritual soul gun’ towards what he thought was "up", also using a ’soul’ to fill his life to the brim, but now, his life limit was 155 hours.
Opening his Spiritual Vision, he hoped to see where the ship was, but it had clearly gone beyond the range of his Spiritual Vision.
Would he die in this dark, cold sea... The possibility had crossed his mind more than once. His adventure was going to end here...
In the dark, claustrophobic surroundings, one minute felt as long as an hour.
He swam in vain, and then, a blue humanoid outline appeared from the left...
