Chapter 322: Chapter 322 He’s Just That Kind of Person
The cold sea water pierced straight to the bone; Laura jumped in wearing only a vest and instantly regretted it.
She felt her arms stiffen as if bound by something, and her abdomen and thighs spasmed intermittently from the sudden drop in temperature.
Laura forced herself to dive deeper. She wasn’t sure what the human record for the deepest no-equipment, shallow-water dive was, but it was clear that if Chen Ke had fallen into a 500-meter abyss, she was out of her league.
Her limit was at a depth of 110 meters, holding her breath for just over 2 minutes, which included the time it took to dive and resurface. But this time, she decided to dive deeper, hoping that Nathan would be able to pull her back up.
The sea was dark and cold as if it belonged to the Evil God. She dived right in the area where the blue column of light burst through the sea surface, hoping Chen Ke was down below.
Then, not far below, Laura saw a dim light. It was blue and sparkling, identical to the beams shooting out of the water.
"Hope that’s him," Laura thought to herself as she dived, swimming faster toward the depths.
When Chen Ke saw a human silhouette, his first reaction was a sharp alertness—how could there be someone in the sea?
He had thought it was another threat and even clutched his soul gun in hand. But then it dawned on him: could this be someone from the ship?
Chen Ke didn’t believe that anyone would jump off a ship in stormy weather to look for him. Maybe Lucina would, but no one else aboard the Endurance shared that kind of bond with him.
Yet the miracle happened. As the other person followed the light of the soul gun in his palm to him, he saw Laura’s face through the blue light.
"Glub, glub, glub," Chen Ke spoke.
The other’s face showed a strange expression. Her mouth puffed up, and she couldn’t help herself but also "glub, glub, glub," and then she clutched her throat.
Chen Ke realized Laura was running out of breath.
He wrapped his arms around Laura from behind, felt the rope tied to her, and gave it a fierce tug, hoping someone up top would see it.
Then he swam upward with her.
Chen Ke had only flailed a few times when folks on the ship began pulling the rope hard, quickly dragging the two out of the sea and above water.
"Phew..." Chen Ke shook his hair and spat out a few mouthfuls of salty seawater. Laura was choking, one hand gripping the rope, the other covering her mouth as she spit out water.
"Pull them up!" a few sailors shouted from the ship’s edge.
Nathan and a few other sailors were pulling on the rope with all their might. In this manner, the two were hauled up along the side of the vessel.
The two collapsed onto the deck; Laura had swallowed a lot of water and her belly was bloated, coughing and vomiting. Chen Ke, on the other hand, felt rather good; being able to emerge from the dark water and see the sky again was beyond lucky.
"Cough, cough, cough...urgh..." Laura gasped for air, clutching her stomach with a painful expression; Nathan somehow found two blankets and draped them over the shivering pair.
"Look at that, our heroes have returned," Conrad said, standing by with a smile.
"No need to thank me," Chen Ke responded, waving his hand offhandedly.
"You were down there for at least ten minutes, I’m pretty sure you didn’t have an oxygen tank; how did you manage?" Nathan asked, puzzled.
"The potential of humans is limitless. If you had jumped in ten minutes earlier, you could have done it too," Chen Ke deflected with a vague answer.
"Has the storm stopped?" Chen Ke looked up at the sky and inquired.
"Yes, you’re right. We’re in luck. If the weather stays this way, we’ll quickly reach Norton City," Conrad replied.
"Whatever you did underwater, the storm disappeared soon after your success," Laura chimed in, now recuperated.
Chen Ke nodded, it seemed the storm and the squid monster came as a package.
"Is the cockpit still functional?" Nathan looked up at the bridge.
The top level of the bridge had been crushed, the ceiling was gone, the captain’s quarters had vanished, and only half of the cockpit remained, with many of the marine instruments likely broken, leaving only the helm standing there.
"Barely functional, but we will have to rely on visual navigation now... radar, radio, navigation equipment, and surveillance... all gone..." Conrad sighed.
"Captain, the fish hold is taking on water..." a crew member ran over and shouted at that moment.
"What?!" Conrad exclaimed in surprise.
"Why is it all bad news tonight..." Chen Ke also sighed.
"Okay, how big is the breach? How bad is the water intake?" Conrad asked anxiously.
"There’s a crack about one meter long on the right side of the ship, and the water in the fish hold has reached up to our calves..." the crew member answered.
Conrad, with one hand on his hip and the other covering a wound on his forehead with a towel, had a pained expression. This ship was their only place to stand; if it sank, they were all done for.
"Alright, lads, anyone who can move, get moving. Our ship has a leak, everyone to the fish hold, find a way to plug the hole and pump out the water!" Conrad commanded.
Every person on board sprang into action, fetching various containers from the rest area and the kitchen to bail out the water, forming a line that extended from the deck down into the cabin below.
"Nathan, if you don’t mind, would you come with me to the cockpit?" Conrad looked at Nathan.
"Why not?" Nathan responded.
"You two take a break here. If we’re lucky, we’ll set sail as soon as possible..." Conrad said to Chen Ke and Laura.
"Oh right, here’s your stuff." Nathan pulled out a gun from behind him and took a phone and a wallet from his pocket, handing them to Chen Ke.
Chen Ke wiped his hands and took the items, having just been about to ask Laura where she had put his things, also mildly worried that she might have decided to take them with her when she jumped...
"We’re off to get busy, you just sit and wait for news," Nathan said.
Chen Ke nodded, and the two turned to run towards the bridge.
Conrad had actually survived, a truly lucky old man. The ship had experienced too many unpleasant things tonight, and seeing Laura shivering with cold, Chen Ke draped the blanket from his own shoulders over her.
"Aren’t you cold?" asked Laura.
"I have a unique way of keeping warm," said Chen Ke.
"Okay... maybe you can teach me sometime," Laura said, looking down to untie her ponytail and wringing water from her hair.
"A moment ago... thank you, if it hadn’t been for you jumping in, I might have died down there," Chen Ke scratched his head and said.
"It was nothing, if you hadn’t jumped down to deal with that squid, we wouldn’t have the chance to be sitting here chatting," Laura smiled.
"Mmm..." Chen Ke nodded, remaining silent for a few seconds.
"Why did you jump?" Chen Ke suddenly asked.
Laura chuckled, looked at Chen Ke, and countered, "Then why did you jump?"
"Because... that’s a trouble only I could sort out," Chen Ke answered.
"Same here, that’s just the kind of people we are, Chen Ke." Laura grinned, standing up and wanting to find something to help with.
Chen Ke held his belongings in his hands. He was now soaking wet, carrying his phone and wallet with no difference to tossing them into the sea; he only decided to first slide the gun into its holster.
