Chapter 269 Silver Knight

Chapter 269: Chapter 269 Silver Knight

Since there was nothing useful for Chen Ke at the ordinary soldiers’ camp, staying there was pointless.

Chen Ke had originally hoped to find a soldier’s suit here, but now he could only look elsewhere.

Turning his head toward the group of refugees, Chen Ke saw some soldiers seeking assistance from the civilians, and it seemed they had organized some people to help transport arrows and supplies to the walls of the defense city.

Compared to the powerful and well-equipped Silver Knights, the ordinary soldiers of Fan Hede suffered heavy casualties as they were the main force in the defense of the city.

Most of the Silver Knights stayed inside the defense city and the castle, protecting the kingdom’s bloodline. It was only because Faralis had left without a reason that a team had been dispatched to search for her.

"Hey, sir, could you lend a hand?" a dull voice came, and Chen Ke turned to see a Silver Knight waving at him about a dozen steps away.

Damn... When did he come over?

"Sir, could you lend a hand?" the Silver Knight asked again, fearing that Chen Ke hadn’t heard him.

Chen Ke looked at him perplexedly, wondering why this fellow hadn’t questioned why a commoner was standing inside the barracks.

"What should I call you? Sir?" the Silver Knight had already approached Chen Ke, his helmet’s visor was pitch black, obscuring the Knight’s face.

"You can call me... Giles." Chen Ke’s mind raced, and he picked a name that seemed familiar.

He had some recollection of the name but had forgotten where it came from.

"Ha-ha! Giles... that’s the same name as our Grand Library Master, very good, Mr. Giles, I saw you helping in the barracks, so you must be a kind-hearted person. The Knight Order now needs your assistance, you wouldn’t refuse, would you?" the Silver Knight said.

"I... of course, no problem. What would you like me to help with?" Chen Ke asked awkwardly, bringing his hands together.

"We need to transport supplies to the city wall, but our soldiers are limited in number, most of them are fighting in the town, so we have to ask for your help in carrying them." the Silver Knight explained.

"Sure... sure... carrying stuff is no problem." Chen Ke nodded.

"Good, we’ve organized dozens of people to help, follow me, you’ll go with the fourth team into the palace storeroom." the Silver Knight said and gestured for Chen Ke to follow him.

Hmm... an opportunity to enter the palace, maybe I could find something useful. Chen Ke certainly wouldn’t just obediently help them carry things; he’d first take a look inside the castle...

Dozens of people organized by six Silver Knights queued at the entrance arch of the palace, Chen Ke jogged up and through the crowd on the lawn, lining up at the end of the line.

The Silver Knight, his right hand on the hilt of his sword at his waist, led the platoon of civilians towards the palace storehouse in silence, and Chen Ke could tell that everyone’s mood was rather low.

This battle for Fan Hede was likely a matter of national survival, and perhaps, after tonight, Fan Hede would cease to exist.

If that was the case, when was the "Great Void" in the cathedral? After the fall of Fan Hede?

Hmm... although Chen Ke was curious, this war had nothing to do with him, nor did the history of Fan Hede; what was most valuable to Chen Ke in this "Great Void" was what he would receive after completing the cycle.

Since Yasla, the consortium, and even the mysterious forces of Brother Discouraged were all gathered in this Otherworldly Space, it was evident that the items obtained in the end would be of great value.

A team poured majestically through the great doors of the palace; the courtyard inside the gate was smaller, with stables, a well, and a long staircase leading to the interior of the castle.

On this long staircase stood eight heavily armored knights wielding long spears and tower shields, making it clear they were not to be trifled with.

Chen Ke’s group didn’t progress up the staircase, instead turning right and entering a small door in the inner wall.

The passage through the small door was narrow, barely allowing two people to walk side by side, with various supplies haphazardly stored in rooms on either side. After passing several rooms, which Chen Ke peeked into and saw were filled with horse gear and hay, the passage curved along the design of the wall, and after rounding a bend, Chen Ke glanced into a slightly larger room on the side and his eyes lit up.

Inside that room, on an armor rack, was a complete set of Silver Knight armor!

Chen Ke could no longer move his legs at all. He looked ahead, the team was still silently marching on, the lead silver knight was out of sight from his angle.

He slowed his pace, then glanced back. Nobody was there.

Time waits for no one!

Without a second thought, Chen Ke stopped and began to slowly walk backward, soon falling several meters behind the group.

When he realized no one had noticed one person was missing, he tiptoed into the room they had just passed.

Under the surveillance of his Spiritual Vision, Chen Ke could see the surroundings clearly, so he had no concerns about someone suddenly appearing.

This room was not an armory, for he saw no weapons other than the suit of armor, which also looked unusual compared to the silver luminescence worn by other knights. It was rather dim and filled with hack marks, the left arm piece even had signs of cracking, and the helmet was slightly rusted.

It seemed that this armor was discarded by an old soldier and left in this decrepit storehouse, treated as junk.

"Hmm... Buddy, get ready to embark on the journey once more..." Chen Ke muttered to himself.

In his field of vision, an information box appeared.

This armor remained quietly on the display, and though it was only white-quality gear, its enchantments presented it as fairly good defensive equipment.

70% physical resistance... almost invincible, which probably meant the armor was bulletproof?

However, this incredible physical resistance came from its poor durability; the lower the durability, the higher the defense, which had a desperate edge to it.

Having armor was better than none, and given his situation, Chen Ke could not be choosy. He removed his robe and unloaded the armor piece by piece, then clad himself in it.

Medieval armor was difficult to put on, usually requiring the assistance of two or three squires for a knight, but Fan Hede armor was not the same as typical medieval armor and was relatively easier to wear.

After some time spent getting dressed, Chen Ke realized something was missing—a lining shirt. Almost bare-chested under the armor, it felt incredibly uncomfortable against his skin, though his legs were alright, given he still wore pants, but his upper robe didn’t fit, so he had to take it off.

But now was not the time to be fussy. He straightened up, took a few steps to get used to the weight and balance—it wasn’t too bothersome, and the armor made a clinking sound as he moved, which was actually quite satisfying.

Next, Chen Ke picked up the helmet, slowly placed it on his head, completely covering his face. Looking at the world outside through the narrow visor slits of the helmet gave him a sense of isolation from the surroundings.

It was as if his own humanity was sealed off, leaving only the persona of a silver knight to face the world.

There’s always a line like this in war-themed novels, "Once you pick up the gun, you’re not you anymore." Chen Ke felt that now.

Whatever the era, man-made tools of slaughter always eradicated the user’s humanity.

"So then... let’s go have a stroll..." said Chen Ke, walking out with a clinking stride.
